The Aphasia Center of California opened its doors
as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in September 1996. Housed
at the downtown Senior Center on Grand Avenue in Oakland, the Aphasia
Center of California was the first independent charitable organization
in the United States dedicated to providing direct services to individuals
with aphasia.
All therapy services at the Aphasia
Center of California are provided by highly experienced speech-language
pathologists who have dedicated their careers to the treatment of
aphasia and other neurologic communication disorders.
Participants of the Aphasia Center
come from six counties in the Bay Area as our programs are innovative
in addressing the otherwise unmet needs of those affected by aphasia.
Participants' racial and ethnic background represent the diverse
Bay Area community.
As we enter our 11th year of operation,
our Board of Directors and staff are dedicated to keeping fees affordable
and to reducing fees of needy participants in order to allow anyone
who will benefit to attend our programs. We are extremely proud
to have provided more than $80,000 worth of subsidized services
since opening our doors.
The Aphasia Center of California is
an externship site for students finishing their Master's degrees
in speech-language pathology. We have recently supervised students
from the University of Montreal, Boston University, San Francisco
State University, and California State University, East Bay.
