Setting up POPS/IMAPS and SMTPS on Outlook

  • Tools > E-mail Accounts
  • Add a new e-mail account
  • Select either POP3 or IMAP
  • Set Incoming mail server to mail.employees.org
  • (Optional) set Outgoing mail (SMTP) server to mail.employees.org
  • Set all other entries as normal (do NOT click on "SPA" - this is a Microsoft hack that is not supported on Employees.org).
  • Click "More Settings"
  • Select the Advanced Tab
  • Under POP3 or IMAP, select "This server requires an encrypted connection"

Setting up POPS on Outlook Express

  • Import Certificate as Described
  • Tools/Accounts
    • New Account or Edit Existing by Double-Clicking on Account
  • General Tab, complete as appropriate:
    • Account Name
    • Name
    • Organisation
    • Email Address
    • Reply Address
  • Servers Tab
    • Incoming - POP3
    • Incoming Mail - mail.employees.org
    • Outgoing Mail - mail.employees.org
    • Account Name : whatever
    • Password : whatever_else
    • UNTICK Log on using Secure Password Authentication
    • TICK My Server Requires Authentic

UPDATE: Our SMTP server now supports SMTPS or SMTP with STARTTLS
plus SMTP AUTH for mail relay authentication. We continue to support
POP-before-SMTP, but SMTP AUTH over encrypted tunnels is our preferred
method.

Introduction


POPS and IMAPS are secure versions of POP and IMAP respectively. By transmitting all information, including username and login, over an encrypted SSL connection, POPS and IMAPS provide protection against attackers reading the mail in transit or collecting username and password information.
