These are current projects we're working on. If you need it and don't see it on this list, you may want to mail us and talk about it. Things with a ? beside them are not currently being worked on. Things underlined are (and you can click on the link to see the current status hopefully)

If you're part of the help list (and so should have a plone account, yell if you don't), just add a comment here for anything we should add. Make the subject a WikiWord (needs to have a capital at the beginning and a capital somewhere else in the word) and the body a description.

If you pick up a project click on the ? beside the WikiWord. This will create a new page. Put something in there telling us what you're doing. I don't currently have a way to get notification on updates to this Wiki, so a mail to help would be a good idea too.

As things get completed, we can take the comments out of the page by editing it.

NewUserCreation --rnapier, Mon, 14 Jun 2004 20:30:30 -0700 reply
Need a way to create users.

  • Look at whether Plone forms are a good match so I don't have to port the whole silly form script (which is complex to say the least).
  • Look into how Zope would talk to mysql so we can update the database.
  • In any case, set up a test environment to create accounts on rather than the "real" system (like we used to do). VMWare on laptop is probably the easiest solution (though how do you export stuff out of one Zope and into another? Does Zope just become a pain?)
  • This is a good point to add the AccountAging field in the database.

RenumberGids --rnapier, Mon, 14 Jun 2004 20:31:47 -0700 reply
Need to renumber all GIDs that are currently below 1000. This will make it easier to find system accounts (and allow us to recompile suexec with more-default settings).

VirtualHosting? --rnapier, Mon, 14 Jun 2004 20:32:13 -0700 reply
Accept new virtual hosting (web and mail) requests. Should be an easy port of the hostme script. We also need a way to "unhost" domains.

MigrateOldWeb? --rnapier, Mon, 14 Jun 2004 20:32:40 -0700 reply
Move the old employees.org web pages into the plone. The old stuff is in /export/homef/employees/html.

  • procmail-howto should be updated for the current system
  • remote-howto should be updated
  • virt-howto is mostly right and just need reformating
  • web-howto is mostly right, though it probably needs info on PHP.
  • And of course a new plone-howto :)

WebIt --rnapier, Mon, 14 Jun 2004 20:33:00 -0700 reply
Port webit tool.

BsdPan? --rnapier, Mon, 14 Jun 2004 20:34:09 -0700 reply
Figure out how to switch out CPAN-loaded modules in /usr/local for BSDPan modules so they get tracked correctly in package management. This may require biting the bullet and doing a make perl.local which is scary but probably won't break anything.

MysqlMe --rnapier, Mon, 14 Jun 2004 20:37:01 -0700 reply
Port existing mysqlme script. Should be a trivial port.

WhackUser --rnapier, Mon, 14 Jun 2004 20:37:44 -0700 reply
User deletion script. Closely related to NewUserCreation script. Mostly just needs porting.

TestEnvironment? --rnapier, Mon, 14 Jun 2004 20:38:17 -0700 reply
Need to figure out how to set up a testing environment. rnapier is currently playing with a VMWare session on his laptop, but this isn't really scalable. stannous has offered a machine, and that's probably the best solution.

AccountAging --rnapier, Mon, 14 Jun 2004 20:39:00 -0700 reply
Need a way to age out abandoned accounts. Probably a "touch me" web page once a year. Might "auto-touch" based on logins, though we really like the idea of actually checking that the user is capable of reading mail.

We could combine this with allowing users to give an AlternateContact in the database so they won't have to read the mail sent to every account.

AlternateContact --rnapier, Mon, 14 Jun 2004 20:39:32 -0700 reply
It would be good if the user database included a "contact" field that would allow users to get administrative mail for an account centralized to one place. For "everybody" mail, we could uniquify across "contact" allowing people to just get one copy.

ConvertStorables? --rnapier, Tue, 15 Jun 2004 07:15:10 -0700 reply
Perl Storables are written in the wrong byte order for Intel. We need a short script that will read a Storable on willers-tos (the old box) and write it back out in network order. An admin can run this for people on the old box. A second script that reverses the process on the new willers would be handy too (to make Storables faster).

BackupSystem --rnapier, Tue, 15 Jun 2004 08:32:13 -0700 reply
We need to create backups of our system information so we can rebuild the box if we break something.

DocumentSystem? --rnapier, Tue, 15 Jun 2004 08:32:40 -0700 reply
Need to document how we've built the system, particularly options used in /usr/ports.

SPFRecord? --rnapier, Wed, 16 Jun 2004 18:45:27 -0700 reply
We should deploy an SPF record, together with AuthenticatedSMTP to make it workable.

AuthenticatedSMTP --rnapier, Wed, 16 Jun 2004 18:47:24 -0700 reply
Either deploy !SASL authentication for SMTP so that people can relay through us, or figure out how to rearrange the !UCE rules so that DSL domains like bellsouth.net can pop-before-smtp. Even with pop-before-smtp, SASL is somewhat more foolproof.

MailmanSpamAssassin --key, Thu, 24 Jun 2004 11:41:47 -0700 reply
Some sort of SpamAssassin? integration to Mailman would be nice.

MailmanNewLists --key, Thu, 24 Jun 2004 11:55:21 -0700 reply
Currently, new lists are not created in Mailman. There needs to be a cabal of Mailman system maintainers that monitor the special "mailman" list and handles list creation requests.

NewSSLCertOrganization --key, Thu, 24 Jun 2004 12:22:36 -0700 reply
Explore migrating from self-signed service certificatess to a single self-signed CA cert that is used to sign the service certs. Then we only have to give the one CA cert to users for all of our services.

MailmanArchiveSearch? --key, Thu, 24 Jun 2004 13:51:06 -0700 reply
Are searchable mailman archives desirable? There are HTDig? patches to integrate a search box with the mail archive.

AntiVirusScanningOption? --key, Wed, 28 Jul 2004 17:20:39 -0700 reply
Amavisd is an anti-virus framework that can be wired into spamassassin/procmail mail delivery path. There are Anti-Virus plugins, some commerical, some free, that can be plugged into Amavisd to perform the actually AV scanning. I know of a site using ClamAV?, which I believe is free for non-commercial use.

SiteIndex? --key, Tue, 19 Oct 2004 10:40:30 -0700 reply
Rona Sissons has asked if the old .siteindex could come back.

InvestigateLaszlo? --key, Wed, 19 Oct 2005 10:52:42 -0700 reply
Amit Agarwal has asked if we could installed Laszlo. Someone would need to investigate the ramifications of installing Laszlo on system resources and security.
