APHASIA CENTER NEWS:

Cisco Systems Foundation Gives Grant

Cisco Systems Foundation recently awarded the Aphasia Center of California a $10,000 grant to help fund the Center’s Reading and Writing Skills groups, “in recognition of the (AAC’s) service to the community and on behalf of the employees of Cisco Systems, Inc.” The check was presented at a March 5, 1999, Cisco Foundation Awards Luncheon.

IBA Helps Center for Second Year in a Row

BA of San Francisco, an association of insurance brokers, held their annual golf tournament and generously donated all tournament proceeds, amounting to $3,000, to the Aphasia Center. Thanks to all the participants and IBA!

The Aphasia Center is Growing!

So far in 1999, we've added an additional weekly communication treatment group, resumed our reading/writing classes, and launched a fitness/relaxation class.

Staying Fit

We are fortunate to have Elyse Dukatz, Oakland Unified School District Adult Education instructor, for our fitness/relaxation class. Ms. Dukatz brings more than 30 years of enthusiastic experience as a high school dance instructor and choreographer in addition to her training in yoga and other movement arts. A hearty welcome to Elyse!

Aphasia Center Trains Graduate Students

The Aphasia Center is a training ground for students completing their Master’s Degrees in Communicative Disorders from San Francisco State University and California State University, Hayward. The ACC is currently supervising two students from SFSU--Laura Young and Patty Bray. All the ACC speech pathologists and participants are enjoying “teaching” beginning clinicians about aphasia!
