Mission
The Canadian Cancer Society is a national community-based organization
of volunteers, whose mission is the eradication of cancer and the enhancement
of the quality of life of people living with cancer.
The Canadian Cancer Society, in partnership with the National Cancer
Institute of Canada, achieves its mission through research, education,
patient services and advocacy for healthy public policy. These efforts
are supported by volunteers and staff and funds raised in communities across
Canada.
Where Our Money Comes From
The Canadian Cancer Society is totally supported by public donations.
Our programs receive no government aid and we are not part of the United
Way.
Each time you contribute to the Canadian Cancer Society, we put your
money to work in your community. Here is how your investment is spent
in the fight to beat cancer:
-
47% Research
-
38% Community Programs
-
9% Fund Raising
-
6% Administration
Cancer Research
Almost half of the money raised by the Canadian Cancer Society in Ontario
funds the most promising research projects across Canada. Research
grants are determined through a stringent peer review system by the Society's
research affiliate - the National Cancer Institute of Canada.
In 1997-98, $35 million was awarded to cancer researchers through the
generosity of Canadian Cancer Society donors - researchers in Ontario received
half that amount.
The Canadian Cancer Society is proud to have committed an additional
$3 million to cancer research in 1997, as a result of the recent generosity
of our donors. This will provide $1.25 million each to breast and
prostate cancer research and $500, 000 to match funds with the Canada Foundation
for Innovation.
