Along the road from Lihue to Poipu, you go past a lookout with a view of some ancient fish ponds used by the Menehune. They were a race of small people that pre-dated the polynesean people who came to Hawaii over one thousand years ago. The Menehune were quite adept at farming fish and kept ponds seperated by gates for raising fish of different ages. Unfortunately, the Menehune seemed to have dissapeared about 150 years ago. No one knows what happened to them.
You can also see the bright red soil that is found all over the island of Kauai'i. They even use the soil as a natural dye for a line of "dirt shirts" that are sold all over the island.
