Penn Relays

Down here in Philadelphia, GBTC has completed the 4x100's, with the Shuttle Hurdles and 4x400's still to go.
We had a lightning delay, so the events are a little behind (well, 2 hours behind). Full results of GBTC's action at the Penn Relays will be available at pennrelaysonline.com. Additionally, Anna Willard (representing Michigan) just ran a 4:13 in the 1500 as part of Michigan's collegiate record 4x1500. Anna ran with GBTC last summer at the Club National championships in California.

UConn Spring Outdoor Invite 4/21/07

April 21, 2007 - Storrs, CT - Sherita Williams takes top honors once again in the hop, skip, and jump by almost 2 feet with her current 2007 outdoor season best, a triple jump A-standard US National Qualifier, 13.20m (43-3.75), extending her repeat victories over UConn's Tamara Highsmith. Although Sherita already qualified with her best indoor marks, two times over the qualifying outdoor standard (13.26 at BU Valentine and 13.22 at USATF-NEs), she is making steady progress this spring while staying healthy, building strength and reworking her form. Ray Smith joined her in jumping, he in the long jump.

Williams and Smith at Brown 4/14/07

Although Sherita Williams has already qualified for the USATF Outdoor National Championships based on her indoor results, her training outdoors in Providence is coming along nicely with "spring" marks already approaching the elite class we've come to expect. By almost 2 feet, Sherita Williams won the triple jump with 13.19m (43-3.25) over Tamara Highsmith of UConn. Ray Smith was in a tight battle at the top in the long jump with more than half the participants within inches of each other, the top three including athletes from Brown and UConn separated by less than 3 inches! Ray finished third in a field of eleven with 6.70m (21-11.75). In two weeks, the highly anticipated trip to Penn Relays!

Was it bedlam in Dedham? - NEU Invite 4/14/07

No. But the place was crazy with GBTC red at the top of the ranks. The meet warmed up with 4x100 action, and it was just that, warm up. The girls were able to work out some chemistry, particularly between Kloiber and O'Brien who will keep their 3rd and 4th legs respectively for Penns. Alternate Tessa Clare and 2nd leg Deanna Clark both got lost on the way to the meet, so Miyun Kim jumped in as the alternate to the alternate (good thing she had track clothes)! Very Nice! And Konique Ballah getting her track legs back ran a nice opening relay leg and returned for both the 100 (14.97) and 200 (30.74). Tessa did make it in time for the 200, and won her heat (28.52) while waving to the crowd (oh, no that was her taking her headband off during the race). Deanna skipped out on the 800, but ran the 200 (30.40). Sara O'Brien played catch up in the wind, picking off college girls like it was Autumn apple season, running to 4th overall (60.36). Caroline Occean, keeping her sniffles at bay, in the 1500 ran a solid opening race for 6th (4:54.71) among a nice pack of gals, while Gaskins was under the weather and did not run. Allison McCabe went out cautiously in the 5k (17:42.91) for 2nd place getting stuck in limbo with a Dartmouth girl behind her and BAA's Holbrook ahead. Worried her fastest practice pace no faster than 80s would give her trouble, you wouldn't know it with her opening 62 in the 4x400. Caroline ran 2nd leg in 60 to O'Brien in 59 to Tessa Clare for the anchor leg, where the foursome earned silver over Bryant, Holy Cross B, Dartmouth B and Babson. Jennifer Hawkes coming off an extremely heavy training week practicing through this meet as she should, was a bit flat today, yet still tied 4-ways for first. Stacey Connor, wasn't just knocking, she kicked the door down on 40 meters in the discus with her 3rd place throw of 40.37m (132-5) to break the club record for the third straight time. While Anne Baker did battle with Dartmouth and PRed in the hammer 48.06m (157-8) for 4th place, throwing 5 meters further than her throw at Tufts two weeks ago.

On the men's side, Jerome Mauris was a no show, but in the 5000 Ted Breen (15:21.17) and Avi Kramer (15:21.35), both saying no to New Balance's BU graduate Liam Revell and all the college kids, took 1st and 2nd proudly in the cold temp. And new member TJ Niles took on the 10k for 2nd place (33:33.12). Theo Mbacke (16.76) just 0.01 behind 6th place in the 110 hurdles is training hard and getting hungry for fast times. While Dave Cahill ran the plan in the 400 intermediate hurdles to the tune of 3rd place (56.95). And Joshua Meidenbauer rounded out the team performances in the shot put (9.70m) and discus throw (29.42m).

Westfield, UConn - GBTC Takes Pride and Wins

At Westfield on March 31st, Jennifer Hawkes continues her onslaught on the high jump club record clearing 1.70m for the win and by far distanced herself from the other college competitors. Jennifer is joined by Tessa Clare on the 14th of April at Northeastern for more high flying.

In the intermediate hurdles, Matt Collins makes his long awaited return to the track post injuries and wedding and snuck between high school coaching duties. Matt in his usual catch up race just misses nipping first place with a decent opening 56.80. We are working on finding a way to get busy Matt down to Penns to join Theo Mbacke, Francis Shen and Mat LeMaire in the Shuttle Hurdles.

On April 7th, UConn cleared their snow and held a meet where Sherita Williams and Ray Smith opened their outdoor season. Sherita won in the triple jump by a foot with her casual 13.09m (42-11.5) over UConn/Shore AC's multi-eventer Tamara Highsmith. While Ray officially debuted under the club name with a good opening 6.78m (22-3) in the long jump for third. Both Sherita and Ray will join us in our 4x100 teams at Penn Relays, while Ray will surprise going long in our 4x400 as well. In the meantime, this weekend they plan a trip to Brown.

Knocking on Dedham's Door - NEU Invite

GBTC female athletes continue to be a dominate force with 11 competitors this weekend at the Northeastern Solomon Invite, 6 men join them. We get a Penn Relays preview in the 4x400 with Allison McCabe, Caroline Occean, Sara O'Brien and Tessa Clare with Deanna Clark as alternate and in 4x100 a team of Konique Ballah, Deanna Clark, Christine Kloiber and Sara O'Brien with Tessa Clare alternate. In open events, Anne Baker looks to make improvements with more outdoor hammer practice under her belt, while Stacey Connor continues to knock on the 40m barrier in the discus. Joshua Meidenbauer looks to find his slide and spin in both the shot put and discus. Tessa Clare and Jennifer Hawkes look to show the college girls how its done. Allison McCabe will do battle with BAA's Mariko Holbrook and Dartmouth's distance crew in the 5000. Ted Breen and Avi Kramer will look for PR's and challenge BC and Dartmouth with a little New Balance sprinkled in the 5000. Some of our middle distance women, Caroline Occean and Ronnesia Gaskins, look to start off the season with some strength in the longer 1500. While 400meter runners Jerome Mauris and Deanna Clark each move up to the 800, both plan doubling back in the 200m sprint. Joining them in the 200, sprinter Konique Ballah makes her outdoor debut with Indu Conley who will both double in the 100m and Tessa Clare might take a lane for half a lap. In the 400m, Sara O'Brien hopes to enter into the faster first heat and get her motor running. While Dave Cahill climbs back on to the intermediate hurdle horse also eyeing that faster first heat. Theirno Mbacke attacks the hurdles in preparation for the Penn Relay shuttle hurdles at the end of the month.

To our South, Sherita Williams and Ray Smith plan to hit the Brown track in Providence, RI for their invitational.

Nelson 2007 Bradley Award Winner

Sara A. Nelson is the 2007 winner of the Margaret Bradley Award.

Sara Nelson lived in Boston and briefly ran workouts with the Greater Boston Track Club last August but did not represent the club in races. Her husband is in the Coast Guard so they have to move every three years. Since they move around the country they are inclined to see a good bit of it on the way. So on the way from Boston to a Great Lakes station in Chicago she stopped at the Grand Canyon. She said, "I'll never forget seeing the sign at the trail head titled, "Can you run a marathon?" Intrigued, I went over to the sign, and was surprised to see a picture of a young girl running with a GBTC singlet. It was very strange and ironic to read about a fellow GBTC teammate while [I was] across the country visiting a national park. I read her story in awe. I felt very sad, but quickly realized how powerful the canyon and mother nature were. When I returned to Boston, I learned a little more about Margaret and her presence on the GBTC. Remembering Tom's recommendation of Universal Sole, I moved to Chicago in early November. Upon arriving in Chicago, one of my top priorities was to hook up with a running group. I joined Universal Sole right away. About a month later, I asked a member of the team about being sister clubs to GBTC and was shocked to find out that Margaret had also run for Universal Sole. It wasn't until that point that I finally knew her entire story. Since then I have learned about her passion for running and her drive to succeed."

Nelson started running at age 10. She ran in high school and later at Springfield College in MA. She ran 10,000 meters in 1999 in 37:23 to qualify for the Division III nationals. She has run the Boston Marathon in 3:29 in 2006. This year will mark her third Boston Marathon and fourth marathon.

Currently, she is the fitness supervisor at Loyola Center for Health & Fitness on the campus of Loyola University Medical Center. She supervises a team of seven fitness specialists and five personal trainers and also does some part time personal training at the Center. She received a Magis Star from Loyola for saving a member's life during a cardiac emergency last month. Nelson has accepted a spot on a medical integration task force that is being assembled nation-wide. This panel of experts will help Loyola Center for Health & Fitness's goal of becoming the industry leader in Medical Integration.

This past marathon training season was one of the most difficult ones for Nelson. She could train in any weather growing up in NY and living in New England, but her training suffered from the Chicago winter. She trained in the bitter cold, biting winds, and through the snow. She found it a mental and physical challenge. Her goal for Boston is to run faster than last year's 3:29. " Next week, I aspire to run with the same dedication and strength as Margaret Bradley. I am honored to be a part of keeping her spirit alive," Nelson said.

The Margaret Bradley award is given yearly to a woman runner from Chicago's Universal Sole Running Club to race in the Boston Marathon who exemplifies the qualities that characterized the late Margaret L. Bradley. The award is funded by an endowment managed by the Greater Boston Track Club. A reciprocal award is given in the fall to a woman from the GBTC to race the Chicago Marathon.

Greater Boston Teams set for Patriots Battle

Boston, MA April 11, 2007
The Greater Boston Track Club open teams are ready for a top showing in the Boston Marathon club team competition. The GBTC in the late 1970s had teams better than counties. But it is a different world now. Our men's team won in 2005 and women's in 2004. Our team members who are entered this year can run faster. Top men, Jeremy Borling, Kibrom Temelso, and David Bedoya —all capable of sub 2:30, will join last year's veterans Lucas Woodward and Kit Wells.
For women Emily Raymond has been running at her highest lifetime level and has earned a place in the elite start. Last year's team leader Megha Doshi is in the best shape of her life as is Lynn Johnson. All have broken three hours, (Raymond with a PR of 2:52) and are likely to do so again. Laura Hayden has also demonstrated sub-three hour fitness. Her best to date is moments slower than three hours.

Noble Gesture Costs Wells Win

Cohasset MA, April 1, 2007—A noble gesture cost GBTC's Kit Wells the win in the 31st running of the Cohasset 10 km. After finishing second last year Wells wanted very much to win this race. When Henry Scollard took the early lead Wells remained cool stalking him from a few meters back. At five mile Wells pulled even. Scollard responded. At the six mile mark the course descended to the Cohasset Village Common, a picturesque green surrounded white halls and churches. Henry Scollard ran right to circle the green heading toward the orange cones that marked the start. But the race really finished to the left. Silence would have won Wells the race. A whisper would have won, (I told you but you didn't hear me.) But instead Wells shouted. Henry Scollard turned, sprinted in the correct direction and won by seconds.

GBTC president and masters runner Bruce Davie took 4th over all but was second master because Henry Scollard is a master.
