Women Win Again!

Liz Crowley Blazing by a Cornfield in Carlisle

Today in Carlisle, MA on a hot, humid, hilly, rocky, rooty, narrow, serpentine, and crowded course 184 runners raced off a dusty start to jam into a single track. The club's Laura Hayden took a tumble to roll in the dirt but bounced up and back into the race. The club women won beating teams from SISU and Tewksbury. Emily Raymond led the team in her usual getup of elastic tuffed hair and turquoise sunglasses followed by Liz Crowley a recent grad of Colgate who works at Children's Hospital and will soon live in Brookline. Tumbling Laura ran in next followed by new member Elizabeth Eiseman who recently graduated from Wellesley College.

Two new men joined the team for this steamy race, Dan Hall, a grad of Bowdoin and second year med student at BU and Jim Croke who is returning to racing after a long layoff from glorious high school seasons. Ryan Kerrigan led the men with help from Brad Kozel and Mike Panas, but the other teams proved to be much too strong.

So now in the USATFNE Cross Country Grand Prix after two races the GBTC women are tied with SISU for first but the men look to be in fourth place.
Women's team photo and full results as soon as they post.

The next Grand Prix x-c race will be the GBTC hosted Topsfield Cross Country Festival on Sept 30.

Women win Twice at Lynn Woods

Junyong Pak not only organized the men's teams for the annual Lynn Woods 4x2.5 mile cross-country relay, ran the first leg, then immediately set up his hot grill to cook burgers and dogs for club members. He sliced onions and tomatoes and provided Coca-Cola, mustard, ketchup, and beer. What a wonderful way to go.
The big news in the racing came from the performance of club president Bruce Davie running on the winning men's masters team with the third fastest club time. GBTC's Allison McCabe let the women's GBTC team to victory posting the second fastest women's time of the day. The second or "Red" GBTC women's team ran in second place. The men's open team placed second. Twenty-six club members raced including two on other teams because GBTC did not have multiple of four.
See the Lynn Woods x-c website http://www.lwrun.org/ for full results, legs, splits, divisions.

The Shining Sea

The best road race in the United States
by Katie Famous

Katie Famous heads for the finish at Falmouth

For 5 years in a row, the Falmouth Road Race has been my favorite running event of the year. When I joined the club, Tom Derderian told me that a big part of post-collegiate running is not always about what you do, but who you do it with. The Falmouth Road Race epitomizes this for me. I first found out about the race a little over 4 years ago. Margaret Bradley was my best friend and from the town of Falmouth. To her, this race was the best, most important race in the whole United States. And she made sure everyone knew it. For her, there was no question if I would race or not. It would only be how high of a number she could get me with her local connections.

The weekend soon took on a life of its own. There were many GBTC'ers in the race, as well as those along for the ride. Won over by her enthusiastic and frequent invitations, most of us went straight from the finishing line to the Bradleys' home. For Margaret, family and GBTC were almost synonymous.

As is well-chronicled in other sections of this website, Margaret died shortly before the 2004 Falmouth Road Race. But many parts of the tradition have continued. Margaret's friends and family still get together and make quite the weekend out of it. I truly believe it would make Margaret so happy to know this.

As for the race itself. In my experience, the weather is either hot, humid, or both. This year we lucked out; it was only hot.

Sloan Siegrist led the women. After years of contributing conversation and cheering, she finally was able to procure a number and impress us with her racing skillz. Sloan finished in an excellent 36th place, just behind recent high school grad and mile star Colleen Weatherbee in 44:26. Laura Hayden finished behind her in 43rd place (46:13). I managed 46th place (46:43). Christy Bonstelle was 77th in 49:01, just a bit behind Liz Ortenburger (48:27).

For the men, Kipp Ortenburger led the way, in his last race for GBTC before leaving with Liz for Australia. He finished in 38:43, good for 59th place. Kit Wells managed to get us all to the race on-time and finished 68th (39:39). Brad Kozel was a few steps behind Kit for almost the entire race, finishing 70th (39:47). Our president Bruce Davie had yet another stellar race, finishing in 77th place with a 40:20. Norm Robbie was also spotted at the race and he finished in 54:28. Last, but not least, Rod Hemingway is on the slow but steady trek back to tip-top shape. He finished in 42:26, good for a 4 minute course PR.

The race was fun, but for me the highlights include singing Meatloaf at the top of my lungs, excellent pre- and post-race feasts, and making s'mores while trying to talk quietly. Not sure if our group managed the "quiet" part, but we certainly had another weekend to remember.

Beardless in Falmouth

A hirsute Tom Derderian does battle with Bill Rodgers at Falmouth in 1976

The Falmouth Road Race is a venerable New England tradition stretching back over 35 years, and competitors in this year's event were treated to a retrospective that included the above archival photo in the race program. Fortunately, full-facial hair coverage is no longer part of the Falmouth tradition. Our (mostly) clean-shaven team headed down to the Cape for the weekend and hoped for cool, dry weather. Several members of the team, in a thrifty move reminiscent of GBTC's glory days, pitched tents in a Falmouth campground the night before the big race.

Race day dawned sunny and not too humid, but temperatures rose quickly as the 10am race start approached. After spending our warm-up time trying to spot famous runners (Billy Rodgers was there once again, as were Meb Keflezighi and a slew of other elites from all over the world) we lined up right behind them in Woods Hole. After 3 miles of rolling hills with some shade, the course becomes completely exposed to the sun as it follows the shoreline, and at this point the race becomes a battle against the heat. Christy Bonstelle and Rod Hemingway reported that they managed to find 15 seconds of shade as the Hood blimp passed overheard.

Towards the finish we passed a few elite runners who had slowed to a walk, presumably having failed to gauge their effort correctly in the heat. In the end all GBTC's representatives acquitted themselves well, with Kipp Ortenburger leading our men's team in 69th place overall (59th male), while Sloan Siegrist, in a welcome return to racing, was 36th among women and GBTC's first female. Full GBTC results (and 1st place times) below. The race is 7.0 miles, but seems longer.

ICE and Doshi lead GBTC at Newburyport 10

Nate Freese, called ICE, by his college coach at Amherst College just joined GBTC and led the team in the hot 10 miler in Newburyport yesterday. Freese, raised on 120 acres in the middle of Vermont, once constructed a cross-country running path on the deer trails behind the family gardens. He will be moving out of the countryside an into a city job at the end of the summer.
Megha Doshi running her last race as a GBTC runner before lifting off for grad school in Berkley, California led the women's team. New GBTC runner Penn grad and French Lit major, Carrie Golden took third on the women's team.
Club president Bruce Davie won prize money for fourth place in the master's race.
