Women Win Again!

Liz Crowley Blazing by a Cornfield in Carlisle

Today in Carlisle, MA on a hot, humid, hilly, rocky, rooty, narrow, serpentine, and crowded course 184 runners raced off a dusty start to jam into a single track. The club's Laura Hayden took a tumble to roll in the dirt but bounced up and back into the race. The club women won beating teams from SISU and Tewksbury. Emily Raymond led the team in her usual getup of elastic tuffed hair and turquoise sunglasses followed by Liz Crowley a recent grad of Colgate who works at Children's Hospital and will soon live in Brookline. Tumbling Laura ran in next followed by new member Elizabeth Eiseman who recently graduated from Wellesley College.

Two new men joined the team for this steamy race, Dan Hall, a grad of Bowdoin and second year med student at BU and Jim Croke who is returning to racing after a long layoff from glorious high school seasons. Ryan Kerrigan led the men with help from Brad Kozel and Mike Panas, but the other teams proved to be much too strong.

So now in the USATFNE Cross Country Grand Prix after two races the GBTC women are tied with SISU for first but the men look to be in fourth place.
Women's team photo and full results as soon as they post.

The next Grand Prix x-c race will be the GBTC hosted Topsfield Cross Country Festival on Sept 30.

Women win Twice at Lynn Woods

Junyong Pak not only organized the men's teams for the annual Lynn Woods 4x2.5 mile cross-country relay, ran the first leg, then immediately set up his hot grill to cook burgers and dogs for club members. He sliced onions and tomatoes and provided Coca-Cola, mustard, ketchup, and beer. What a wonderful way to go.
The big news in the racing came from the performance of club president Bruce Davie running on the winning men's masters team with the third fastest club time. GBTC's Allison McCabe let the women's GBTC team to victory posting the second fastest women's time of the day. The second or "Red" GBTC women's team ran in second place. The men's open team placed second. Twenty-six club members raced including two on other teams because GBTC did not have multiple of four.
See the Lynn Woods x-c website http://www.lwrun.org/ for full results, legs, splits, divisions.

The Shining Sea

The best road race in the United States
by Katie Famous

Katie Famous heads for the finish at Falmouth

For 5 years in a row, the Falmouth Road Race has been my favorite running event of the year. When I joined the club, Tom Derderian told me that a big part of post-collegiate running is not always about what you do, but who you do it with. The Falmouth Road Race epitomizes this for me. I first found out about the race a little over 4 years ago. Margaret Bradley was my best friend and from the town of Falmouth. To her, this race was the best, most important race in the whole United States. And she made sure everyone knew it. For her, there was no question if I would race or not. It would only be how high of a number she could get me with her local connections.

The weekend soon took on a life of its own. There were many GBTC'ers in the race, as well as those along for the ride. Won over by her enthusiastic and frequent invitations, most of us went straight from the finishing line to the Bradleys' home. For Margaret, family and GBTC were almost synonymous.

As is well-chronicled in other sections of this website, Margaret died shortly before the 2004 Falmouth Road Race. But many parts of the tradition have continued. Margaret's friends and family still get together and make quite the weekend out of it. I truly believe it would make Margaret so happy to know this.

As for the race itself. In my experience, the weather is either hot, humid, or both. This year we lucked out; it was only hot.

Sloan Siegrist led the women. After years of contributing conversation and cheering, she finally was able to procure a number and impress us with her racing skillz. Sloan finished in an excellent 36th place, just behind recent high school grad and mile star Colleen Weatherbee in 44:26. Laura Hayden finished behind her in 43rd place (46:13). I managed 46th place (46:43). Christy Bonstelle was 77th in 49:01, just a bit behind Liz Ortenburger (48:27).

For the men, Kipp Ortenburger led the way, in his last race for GBTC before leaving with Liz for Australia. He finished in 38:43, good for 59th place. Kit Wells managed to get us all to the race on-time and finished 68th (39:39). Brad Kozel was a few steps behind Kit for almost the entire race, finishing 70th (39:47). Our president Bruce Davie had yet another stellar race, finishing in 77th place with a 40:20. Norm Robbie was also spotted at the race and he finished in 54:28. Last, but not least, Rod Hemingway is on the slow but steady trek back to tip-top shape. He finished in 42:26, good for a 4 minute course PR.

The race was fun, but for me the highlights include singing Meatloaf at the top of my lungs, excellent pre- and post-race feasts, and making s'mores while trying to talk quietly. Not sure if our group managed the "quiet" part, but we certainly had another weekend to remember.

Beardless in Falmouth

A hirsute Tom Derderian does battle with Bill Rodgers at Falmouth in 1976

The Falmouth Road Race is a venerable New England tradition stretching back over 35 years, and competitors in this year's event were treated to a retrospective that included the above archival photo in the race program. Fortunately, full-facial hair coverage is no longer part of the Falmouth tradition. Our (mostly) clean-shaven team headed down to the Cape for the weekend and hoped for cool, dry weather. Several members of the team, in a thrifty move reminiscent of GBTC's glory days, pitched tents in a Falmouth campground the night before the big race.

Race day dawned sunny and not too humid, but temperatures rose quickly as the 10am race start approached. After spending our warm-up time trying to spot famous runners (Billy Rodgers was there once again, as were Meb Keflezighi and a slew of other elites from all over the world) we lined up right behind them in Woods Hole. After 3 miles of rolling hills with some shade, the course becomes completely exposed to the sun as it follows the shoreline, and at this point the race becomes a battle against the heat. Christy Bonstelle and Rod Hemingway reported that they managed to find 15 seconds of shade as the Hood blimp passed overheard.

Towards the finish we passed a few elite runners who had slowed to a walk, presumably having failed to gauge their effort correctly in the heat. In the end all GBTC's representatives acquitted themselves well, with Kipp Ortenburger leading our men's team in 69th place overall (59th male), while Sloan Siegrist, in a welcome return to racing, was 36th among women and GBTC's first female. Full GBTC results (and 1st place times) below. The race is 7.0 miles, but seems longer.

ICE and Doshi lead GBTC at Newburyport 10

Nate Freese, called ICE, by his college coach at Amherst College just joined GBTC and led the team in the hot 10 miler in Newburyport yesterday. Freese, raised on 120 acres in the middle of Vermont, once constructed a cross-country running path on the deer trails behind the family gardens. He will be moving out of the countryside an into a city job at the end of the summer.
Megha Doshi running her last race as a GBTC runner before lifting off for grad school in Berkley, California led the women's team. New GBTC runner Penn grad and French Lit major, Carrie Golden took third on the women's team.
Club president Bruce Davie won prize money for fourth place in the master's race.

Club Nationals, Day 2

Day 2 of the 2007 USATF National Club Track & Field Championships wrought more fierce GBTC performances, solidifying our women's claim to 4th place (out of 24 scoring clubs) with 87 points, while our men moved up into 4th (out of 38 scoring clubs) with 55 points. In the combined division, GBTC scored 4th (out of 47 scoring clubs) with 142 points. Our nearest competitors in the combined scoring, VS Athletics TC (3rd, 155 points) and Nike-CPTC (5th, 139 points), kept the club's athletes motivated through the closing relays. However, all clubs were something apart from this year's two dominant contenders. Shore AC (276 points combined) and 2006 combined club champion Executive TC (267 points combined) forged the closest rivalry yet seen at these club championships.

Highlights of the second day include Jake Razevich's new club record of 4.90m in the pole vault, Andrew Hall's win and season best of 65.40m in the javelin, the onslaught of GBTC women (Clare, Harlow, and Williams) scoring a combined 16 points in the high jump, and our women's 4x100m (Williams, Taylor, Harlow, and Tuakli-Wosornu) narrowly missing their own club record from the 2006 Penn Relays by 0.16 seconds. Full results can be found here, with individual club member's results from Saturday summarized below. Congratulations to all participating GBTC members, to our devoted coaches David Callum and Tom Derderian, and to the 2007 National Club Track & Field Champions, Shore AC.

GBTC's Sherita Williams, Sean Furey Compete at US Nationals

Indianapolis, Indiana - Thursday June 21 2007 - Both Sherita Williams and Sean Furey will compete in their respective events. Sherita will open the day at 6:20pm in the first of two flights of the triple jump in an attempt to make the top 8 to enter the finals to follow immediately aftewards. Likewise, Sean Furey looks to crack the top 8 in the javelin throw where he is scheduled to be in the first of two flights set to go off at 7:00pm.

Some of you may have noticed last summer's GBTC member, Anna Willard as the top seed in the 3000m steeplechase. She is the real deal, as she took part in breaking 3 collegiate records this year at Michigan including the steeple she is entered in (at 9:38.08). With her collegiate eligibility finally used up, it is no surprise that Nike scooped her up. Her event trial is scheduled for 4:15pm Thursday, in the second of two sections, where they take top 4 in each section plus the next 6 best times overall to the final.

In the high jump, Dan Olson just missed making the trip having a provisional qualifying mark of 2.21 meters, just 1cm away from an auto qualifier. USATF does not look to have taken anyone with provisional marks, this would include Sherita's long jump mark of 6.37 meters, she just 3cm off of an auto qualifier, and Rory Quiller (GBTC member Ryan's brother) at 5.51 meters in the pole vault. In the decathlon, Matt Chisam was just a few points away from the provisional 7550 points needed.

USATF New Englands - GBTC Dominates, Club Records Come Down, Nat'l Qualifiers

Gretchen Chick en route to a PR and 4th place in the 5k

June 17 2007 - MIT, Cambridge, MA - USATF New England Championships

Dacia Taylor takes down the 100 and 200 club records with her 11.98 and 24.62 for two personal bests. Christine Kloiber just missed a Club Nat'l qualifying mark, might have been the blocks left in her lane at 300m, yet still ran a personal best 60.49. Caroline Occean in her first 800 of the season ran 2:12.39. Jen Lee just back from a trip to Tibet opened her season decently with a 2:18.87 with limited speed work. Allison McCabe improves by 5 seconds in the 1500 with a 4:33.16 and beats out two of her old CPTC athletes. Katie Famous breaks 5 minutes to qualify for Club Nationals. Tara Vance joined Katie and Christy Bonstelle in the 3k for team points, scooping up 2nd, 3rd and 4th. New member Maria Millard of Amherst debuts with the club in the 400IHurdle and breaks the GBTC record in 63.50. Maria threw her hat in the HJ, and helped GBTC score all 10 points, Jen Hawkes scoring first in 5ft5, with support from Tessa Donoghue, behind unattached Jen Harlow. In the Long Jump, GBTC women went 1-2-3 and in triple 1-2 with Yetsa Tuakli-Worsornu's debut in her first club open event (2nd in LJ). Stacey Connor wins Disc and picks up the shot this week in practice to take the win. And the GBTC walked away with wins in the warmup 4x1 and cool down 4x4 (4:03) as well. Sherita Williams tuned up in the long jump and triple jump with double victories, after yesterday's USATF CT meet where she posted a club record and provisional USATF National Long Jump qualifier (6.37m) to add to her TJ automatic.

The men also had a good day, new member Darius Walker of Lexington H.S. won both the 100 (10.48) and 200 (21.22) and plans to represent GBTC this summer. Kwesi Frimpong-Boateng off of a very very short warmup ran a season best 10.64 for 1st scoring while Ray Smith after 6 long jumps finished 3rd scoring with an 11.25, just off the qualifying 11.0 mark but likely earning relay duty. 17 year old Nick Colantuono of Lincoln-Sudbury debuted for GBTC in the 400 (51.38) and 200 (22.95) contributing 3 points in the effort. Dave Cahill snuck in 2 points in the 400 with a 51.35 out of the other section. Andie Colon was the 1st N.E. scorer in the 800 with his 1:55.67. Watts and Whalen make improvements in 800. Ted Breen and Brad Kozel scoop up 3 points while Andrew Wommack makes his track debut. David Bedoya wins the 3k and tops the 2007 club list with his 9:13.16. Bill Newsham adds 2 points in the 3k after running the open 800 earlier. In the hot weather, Kibrom and Brennan are the first two men across the line the 5K, both in 15:30. Dan Conti posts a Club National qualifier and joins LeMaire for the 1-2 finish. Francis Shen and Jason Weber pick up 1-2 in the Intermediates, Weber with a PR. Jason Hewitt wins the Steeple still recovering from a nasty chest cold and the GBTC men's team takes first in both 4x1 and 4x4. Dan Conti vaulted to first place scoring, a tie for 2nd overall, while Ryan Quiller's brother Rory cleared 17' with a 5 step approach and 15ft pole. Unfortunately, coming back from NCAA, Rory's poles were run over in shipment and thus today became practice. Ray Smith cranks out a big win in the long jump, as season best 7.20m, and is looking good for Club Nationals. In the shot put, Dan Conti tallies 5 more N.E. points, Jeremy Racine pulls in 6 points between the Javelin and the Discus, while Mike Randall is looking sharp once again hitting 52.00m in the javelin. Both Dave Bergeron (61m) and Drew Soltysiak (56.79m) in the javelin both plan to add their arms to the GBTC squad.

MAX White Team Leader in Winthrop

Max White led a small contingent of GBTC runners including Jacob Trevino in his club debut at this small race in my town. I think GBTC would have won the team prize but the data entry person did not enter our runners as GBTC so the Lynn AC got the prize. Since we all received invitations to the race director's generous barbecue, burgers and beer, and since Max won $25 and Jacob won a pair a good Red Sox tickets in the lottery, I did not protest.

Boston High Performance #3

The GBTC team looks ready for next week's New England Championships from the performances in the 6/9/07 Boston High Performance meet.
The big news of the day may be Gretchen Chick's 20 second personal best in the 3,000 meters or Allison McCabe and Caroline Occean sprinting to the finish of the elite 1500 meters with only eight one-hundredths of a second between them. Or the image of the meet may have been Ted Breen swimming through fatigue in the elite 1500 to a personal best. Although Junyong Pak ran a personal best in the open 3000 and Avi Kramer took a fourth place in the elite 5000 meters maybe David Cahill flinging himself around the track, not his usual once, but twice to run 2:01 in the 800 meters provided the indelible image of the evening.
These athletes combined with those from events not offered at the Bentley meets may well win the New England Championships again at MIT on June 17. The team will go on to the Eastern Regionals on July 7 in Albany and the Club Nationals in New York on July 14-16.

A small but serious contingent of GBTC runners turned out on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend to take part in the first of three meets at Bentley College in the Boston High Performance series. Ted Breen opened his season with a 4:08.98 for 1500m to win the open race. 400m specialist Dave Cahill went for some overdistance work in the 800 and took second in his race in 2:01.93. Allison McCabe ran in the elite 1500m, taking 6th place in 4:39.93, while Andy Colon ran 4:04.21 in the men's elite race.

GBTC Men win Grand Prix 12 km

photo of Gretchen Chick at Westford by Jim Rhoades

I picked up Kibrom Temelso and teammates TJ Niles and Max White at the emergency room entrance to the Chidren's Hospital in Boston after Kibrom's all night shift. I had committed to getting him to the race on time and other teammates promised to see that he tied his result-transponder chip to his shoe. As coach I had told Kibrom in the Boston Marathon to run with teammates Jeremy Borling and David Bedoya, but a blast of optimism had propelled him to run with the elite chase pack. He never finished. At the Bedford 12km, chastened and perhaps a little sleepy, he stuck like velcro to Jeremy. Avi Kramer, recently of Vassar College, ran hesitantly behind three leading runners. All the GBTC top six men ran in the top twenty. They wanted to beat the Central Mass Striders and the GCS-Triad teams that had beaten them in the 5 km. They knew they were a better, longer distance team than a 5 km team. In the misty rain over the hilly course CMS put three men in the top ten, matching GBTC, but only four in the top twenty. GBTC won.

Andrew Wommack and Dylan Morris ran their first races for the club.

Before the women's race Emily Raymond deftly banded tufts of her hair in colored elastics. Why she does this before every race, no one knows. But there might be some magic to it. Emily outkicked Merrimack Valley Striders' Molly Taber to win the women's open race. But Taber's teammates followed too closely and defeated the GBTC team. Gretchen Chick ran the best road race of her life to take second place for the club with Audrey Giesler following in the three-runner scoring used for the women's race.

Tara Vance ran her first race for the club.

GBTC's Best Teams of the Modern Era

PHOTO:Audrey Giesler at Westford (by Jim Rhoades)

"These may be the best GBTC teams of the modern era." says GBTC coach Tom Derderian of the teams the club is sending to the New England Grand Prix # 4 in Bedford, NH 12 km road race. Both GBTC teams score second in the seven-race series. The men's team is only a single point behind the Central Mass Striders and tied with the GCS-Triad team out of Southern New Hampshire but the women's team is tied with Whirlaway six points behind the Merrimack Valley Striders.

The GBTC team leader at the Groton 10km on April 29th, Avi Kramer, who finished second in the race will team up with 5 km leader Jeremy Borling who lead the team at 5 km. Kibrom Temelso who has not run a Grand Prix race since the first one at New Bedford in the half marathon will join them. Brennan Bonner, tip top marathon man, David Bedoya, Ted Breen, and Junyong Pak is a 12 km team that has the stuff to win and launch into the summer Grand Prix hiatus in first place.

The GBTC women's team with Emily Raymond back in action since the marathon, Audrey Giesler, Gretchen Chick, Megah Doshi, and Katies Famous and Fobert and possibly Lynn Johnson will run very close to the Merrimack Valley girls. Raymond and Giesler may well take the first two positions in the race.

GBTC in Aggressive 5km Grand Prix

Today twenty-six GBTC runners raced in the year's third USATFNE Grand Prix road race. Boston University grad student Jeremy Borling from Chicago, racing for the first time since his 2:27 Boston Marathon, led the team to a sixth place finish in perhaps the most hotly contested Grand Prix men's open team race ever. A pack of 30 men ran through the mile together in 4:45 to 5:00. Only one or two seconds per man defined the differences in the order of team placings. The GBTC men had led the GP series points going into the race but came out in a tie for second place a mere point behind the Central Mass Striders. David Bedoya from Spain came back from leading the GBTC team to fourth in the Boston Marathon with his 2:26 to run third for the team seconds behind Junyong Pak a graduate of Tulane.
Elementary school teacher Allison McCabe from University of Connecticut led the GBTC open women's team to second place by taking third overall in the women's race. Boston grad student Laura Hayden, University of Michigan, and Audrey Giesler, University of Indiana, followed McCabe. All the women had a tough time threading their way through the furiously racing herd of men of all ages and shapes. The GBTC women's team is now also tied for second place in the GP point series.
The next GP race is the Bedford, NH 12 km on May 19th.

Greater Boston Men to Defend Grand Prix Lead

The Greater Boston Track Club men's road race team is now in first place in the New England Grand Prix series after two in the seven race series. The GBTC team is three points ahead of the Central Mass Striders and the newly conglomerated GCS-Triad team going into May 6th's 5 km in Westford, MA. The GBTC team has the addition of two marathoners, Jeremy Borling and Kibrom Temelso who did not run on last week's team at Groton. The men placed 7th last year in the GP 5 km but now have a much stronger team.

The GBTC open women's team is running in third place in the GP, one point behind the Whirlaway Racing Team and five points behind the Merrimak Valley Striders. This 5 km team will be bolstered by the return of marathoner Megha Doshi and Audrey Giesler. The women's team placed second last year in the GP 5km.

The fourth Grand Prix race is May 19th at 12 km in Bedford, NH before a long gap until the next GP race in September.

Penn Relays

Down here in Philadelphia, GBTC has completed the 4x100's, with the Shuttle Hurdles and 4x400's still to go.
We had a lightning delay, so the events are a little behind (well, 2 hours behind). Full results of GBTC's action at the Penn Relays will be available at pennrelaysonline.com. Additionally, Anna Willard (representing Michigan) just ran a 4:13 in the 1500 as part of Michigan's collegiate record 4x1500. Anna ran with GBTC last summer at the Club National championships in California.
