And some thoughts on how I came to think of myself as a
writer.
I trace the root of my appreciation for the craft of writing to a point early in my 30-year high-tech career. From beginning to end of that career I wrote software, meeting the necessity clearly to express to the computer exactly what I wanted it to do, using numerous low- and high-level computer languages.

I had to write usage instructions (technical documentation) for the users of the software I'd just finished. Stiving to make the documentation clear, consistent, and logical I realized that the software as seen by the user was not. So I changed the software, then finished the documentation.

Over the years I wrote such documents a few more times, but mostly I wrote technical specifications. These were even more demanding than software, as readers would bring biases and previous experiences that could obscure or change how they understood what I said, but to reach common end results we must all understand the same.

I did almost no creative writing until I was about 40 years old, when I wrote a role-playing module for my sons and some friends. That showed me I could write imaginary stories. Various circumstances led me to write of emotion-laden memories or to attempt poetry or essays.

I am not a driven writer, as many writers are. The desire to write something down comes in waves, sometimes receeding before the process is accomplished. Some day I may finish the children's short story or the fantasy novel that are both under way. In the meantime I'll publish here those writings I believe others may find informative, entertaining, or touching.

Above all else in writing I believe the writer's job is to communicate ideas and emotions clearly, openly, and honestly to the reader.
