Munich

We stopped in Munich on our way from Innsbruck to Prague. We were to be in Munich for only 10 hours but it was probably the longest 10 hours of our lives. That day was September 11th, 2001. The day of the attack on America.

We had just gotten finished with enjoying ourselves at the Hofbraeuhaus where we had sausages, pretzels and of course beer while listening to the traditional beer garden band. From there we had decided to explore a bit more of the city and had stopped to talk to some fellow travelers when a young Canadian traveler hear us speaking English and stopped. "Have you heard" he asked. "The just blew up the World Trade Center" he said in reference to the first of two planes that hit the World Trade Center. We were in shock to say the lease and didn't know if we should believe the horrible news. We quickly made our way to try to find more details.

As we walked through Munich, every bar, restaurant, cafe or shop with a TV had people gathered around to watch the events as they unfolded. One of the more frustrating things was that since we were in Germany everything was in German which made it difficult to find out exactly what was going on. We had to resort to asking the locals, calling home and checking the internet to find out what was going on that day. The picture above is from the Munich train station where hundreds of people came and left throughout the day to see the news on the big screen TV. We spent a good deal of time here as did a lot of people. It was a strange experience being in a different country where you don't speak the language.
