Language Art (reading, writing, spelling, speaking) are the tools that we use to learn and communicate. These tools are emphasized throughout the day in all subject areas. Language arts is allocated the largest time block of the day. In alignment with the California State Frameworks, we will be using literature in our reading program. Works of fictions, nonfiction, poetry and drama may all be included. We will not merely read books, but we will discuss, do assignments, and projects to help students better understand and get excited about reading. Followings are the required readings. The
21 Balloons
Writing is taught as a process that involves the following steps: 1) prewriting; 2) Create a rough draft; 3) Editing and revising; 4) Producing a final draft. Spelling is a combination of vocabulary, word derivations, and spelling strategies. Spelling is your child's responsibility. There will be a pretest on Mondays and posttest on Fridays. Speaking skill will be developed by frequent student project presentations, working in groups, explaining their thinking to others. |

Mathematics will focus on problem solving strategies and real life applications.
A variety of learning resources will be supported by manipulative activities
and will include instruction in the basic strands of mathematics: measurement,
number, patterns and functions, logic, statistics and probability, algebra
and geometry. Students will receive instruction in mental math, fact, and
problem solving. We are using the adopted District Harcourt Mathematics.
This program is comprehensive and we purchased the Challenge Workbook to
augment. Hahn school has the Big 4 Club (addition, subtraction, multiplication
and division fact club) All forth graders should be able to accomplish
this by June.

We will be studying California
history and geography this year. Students will also develop skills
in interpreting graphs, maps, globes and charts. Many of our literature
selections will tie in with the history of California. Students will also
participate in historical simulations to help experience
much of our history. We have a newly adopted test titled California
Adventures in Time in Place.

|
We will be studying Oceangraphy,
Ecosystems,
Geology,
Electricity and Magnetism and California Water systems. Through hand-on
experimentation, students are expected to develop basic skill using scientific
method and a general conceptual understanding in the subject areas.

Approximately every six weeks or so, a project will be introduced to
your child. The goals of this assignment are to develop research skills,
make choices, time management, and to plan a project from beginning to
end. These projects will consist of a project and research papers. These
will explore the connections between historical events and life today.
All disciplines will be investigated.
