April 1997

The 101st Running of the Boston Marathon
April 21, 1997

As opposed to last year, when nineteen Cambridge Running Club members ran in the historic Centennial Edition, this year we were represented by a hardy band of only four. On a cool day when a persistent head wind wreaked havoc with even elite runners' times, our "gang of four" acquitted themselves admirably. Results were as follows:

Bib #RunnerOfficial TimeChip TimeOverall Place Division Place
5306Brian Barringer3:23:073:21:3427921586
7082Scott Duhaime3:45:143:42:0451732177
6369Kerry Kirkendall3:43:493:41:155010687
5611Dave Quilty3:31:023:29:3736851168

All four reported a reasonably positive experience. Particular kudos are due to Dave Quilty who ran a PR. And, for the large group of CRC marathoners who opted to sit out this Boston, it seems that a major Fall marathon effort is in order.

Special Footnotes

One other outstanding CRC marathon performance occurred on the same weekend. True to his contrarian nature ("I Ran Fred's Instead!"), Marcello Scippa completed the new Fred's Marathon (in Devens, MA) in an official time of 3:00:56 to place 7th overall. Chip times were not available.

In the accompanying half-marathon, Amy Otsu ran a 1:48:47 to finish 131st overall (a very strong performance in only her third race ever).

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL MARATHONERS!!!

Other April Races

April 6: City Run (Cambridge) --- 5 miles
April 6: Cohasset Road Race by the Sea (Cohasset) --- 10-K
Seems that CRC was split down the middle as to which of these two popular races to run; several people even made appearances at both, as the following recap of the day's activities from Bruce Davie illustrates:

"Peter Gallimore, Bob Gillon, Derek and myself ran the Cambridge City Run. Results are on Cool Running. Also, I think there is a picture of Peter on one of the photo links from that page. I watched Peter and Bob from behind for almost the whole race, after a first mile in which we all ran between 5:10 and 5:16, and was just able to reel Bob in in the last few hundred yards. Peter, Bob and myself went to Cohasset in the afternoon to watch the 10k there - I decided to do my watching from the roadside, whereas Peter and Bob did it by running the course. Missy had a great run, cheered on by Bob, running her way into second place (and a PR) in the last few hundred yards. Many of us were glad to see her beat the third woman, who had the audacity to wear a headphone radio - no doubt she failed to hear Missy coming up on her as a result. Other CRC runners included Brian Barringer and his girlfriend Allie, Ranjeet, Ginny, Dave Quilty, and Kerry. Afterwards a few beers and showers were had at Kerry's house, followed by a few more beers and food at the traditional postrace party hosted by Kerry's friend in Scituate. A good time was, I think, had by all."

April 13: North Cambridge Classic (Cambridge) --- 5-K
Newcomer (to CRC and racing) Amy Otsu showed tremendous promise in this race running a 21:44 (7:00 pace). She finished 3rd in her age group and 121st overall. "Not too bad for my second race ever, I guess", she modestly admits. I should say not!

And, not to be outdone, veteran Derek Mess ran his "fastest 5-K in a long while" at 17:04 (5:30 pace). This allowed Derek to win the Clydesdale division. Sounds more like the Greyhound division to me!
April 27: James Joyce Ramble (Dedham) --- 10-K
This race continues to be one of the largest and most popular in the Boston area. Several CRC'rs showed up although a couple were obviously suffering the effects of a very recent 26.2.

April 27: Richardson Run for Children (Quincy) --- 5-K
Peter Gallimore was the only CRC'er in this race. However, he represented the club extremely well, finishing 2nd overall in a time of 16:33 (a 5:20 pace) and winning his age group. Unfortunately, he lost first place to a 17 year-old. Gotta watch those young kids, Peter; they'll sneak up on you.
