Race of the Month Salem Heritage Days 10-KSunday, August 10th - 10:00 A.M.Salem, Massachusetts What's that about "mad dogs and Englishmen"? It was truly a terrible morning to race --- 90 degrees, bright sun, and high humidity. And it seems that most CRC'ers, being neither of the above, faced right up to these conditions and stayed home. Who can blame them? The only two brave souls who showed up for this sauna ran very well --- Peter Gallimore in 35:36 (5:44 pace) to finish 66th overall and Marcello Scippa in 36:46 (5:55 pace) to finish 98th. Congratulations to both for their perseverance. CRC will certainly have better Races of the Month. Other August Races August 2: Fresh Pond (Cambridge) --- 2.5-Miles From Peter Gallimore: "On Saturday Ranjeet, Marcello, and I ran the two and a half mile race at Fresh Pond. Marcello finished with a time of 13:38; Ranjeet's time was just over fourteen minutes. I ran a PR of 12:49." August 3: Island Falls SummerFest 5-K (Island Falls, ME) --- 5-K From Melissa Mendel: "Sandy (Newman-Levy) is vacationing with her family in her hometown of Island Falls, ME. On Sunday she ran the hilly course of the Island Falls SummerFest 5-K. She placed 2nd woman, first in her age division and 10th finisher overall with a time of 21:10. She gave the Winnipesaukee Mixed Open Team a message: Watch Out!" August 9: Fresh Pond (Cambridge) --- 2.5 & 5-Miles From Brian Barringer: "I did the 2.5 mile at Fresh Pond on Saturday and finished with a 14:18, 8th overall - however I missed the sauna race on Sunday in Salem." From Dana Laird: " I didn't realize when I signed on with you guys that I would have the fun of getting to report race results, such as they are! So, here goes for me ... I ran the Fresh Pond 5-miler this Saturday as an early-season gauge of what kind of shape I'm in (or need to get into) for the New York Marathon. I was pleasantly surprised with my best-ever in that race by 55 seconds, coming in at 37:40 (maybe those couple of track workouts I've done with you all are paying off). However, it was frustrating in that I was the 4th woman and so didn't get my name in the paper -- even though I finished ahead of the 5th man, who did appear in the Globe! (I was 8th overall.) I may have to have a word with them about their results-reporting policy. :)" Good Work, Dana!! August 9: 20th Chilmark Road Race (Martha's Vineyard) --- 5-K From Janice Smaga: "Four CRC members ran the 20th annual Chilmark 5k. The early morning rain retreated as Dave Quilty, George Morgan, Peter Larsen, and Janice Smaga toed the line. Saturday was a bit cooler than normal for this short but competitive race course which takes you over some very gentle, rolling hills. Dave lead the CRC members with a 20:09, 11th master (m), Janice finished with 22:05 5th master (f). George and Peter were also pleased with their times. Later in the day the CRCers tried surf-casting; George landed an awesome stripped bass!" August 17: Falmouth Road Race (Falmouth) --- 7.1 Miles Am still having some problems getting all the results for this race. On a very hot and humid day, Melissa Mendel ran 44:37 to finish as the 37th female; she also set a PR for this course by over 1.5 minutes. Ginny Carlin ran well at 54:51. Ranjeet Sudan, racing under an assumed name, ran an excellent 42:37. And, Jeff Phillips also was reported to have run, but no results are yet available for him. August 23: New England Triathlon Festival (Lake Sunapee, NH) From Scott Duhaime: "Completed my longest tri to date on Saturday up at Lake Sunapee, at the New England Triathlon Festival. Did the International Course, which consisted of a mile swim, a 23 mile bike and a 6 mile run, finishing as the 44th male and 53rd overall (258 completed the course) in 2:31:06. Out of 170 men, I was 102nd out of the water in 32:08, 42nd over a very hilly bike in 1:15:50, and 34th on a very hilly run in 43:10. Both the bike leg and the overall finish were at the main lodge at the base of the ski area, at the top of a long, steep hill. Definitely one of the most difficult finishes to a race I've ever seen! In addition, I was almost out of the race before it started. I stumbled over my bike walking it to the race, stepping on my rear tire and severely bending the rim. A fellow triathlete saved the day with a spare rim, or I would have been out of luck!" August 30: Brueggers' Classic (Woburn) --- 5 Miles Lionel Kervella was the only CRC'er to show up for this race but he represented us very well. He ran 28:23 to finish in 11th place overall. "The race is organized by the YMCA that I belong to. It's a nice race that goes from the YMCA around Horn Pond."
