W Roxbury YMCA 5K walk and run W. Roxbury, MA, December 17, 2000

As far as we know everyone excepting Christy B. Muldoon spent Saturday December 17th doing Holiday Shopping as our Womens Captain was our one and only representative at the Race of the Month. For her effort La Capitana earned second place honors in a time of 20:17 for a 6:33 pace.

BU Indoor Series

Bruce reports on an indoor PR for the 3000:
Q. What's a good way to fit in a speed workout on a week when CRC doesn't have one?
A. Go to a track meet and run 15x200m @ 3k pace, no rest between repetitions.

So, I decided it was time to kick off my indoor track season by entering the 3000m event at the B.U. "Development" series. The goal was to see if I could get under 9:30, so I entered the heat for folks expecting to run 9-10 minutes. Rather to my surprise I soon found myself in second place and running comfortably at 75 seconds per quarter. After hitting 1 mile in 5:00, I felt the pace slowing and took over the lead. Unlike some other 3k races I've run, I was feeling pretty good by this point and started to focus on winding up the pace for the finish without blowing up. With 3 laps to go I was passed by a GBTC runner who seemed to have a little more speed left than I. I looked for some sort of finishing sprint but could only hold onto second. I did, however, manage to negative split the race, finishing in 9:20.2 - 10 seconds better than my goal and an indoor PR for the distance.

Bruce reports on the indoor mile:
B.U. development series, 12/30 In my second foray onto the track for the season, I decided to take a crack at the mile. After last week's positive experience in the 3k, I figured something around 4:42 was on the cards, which caused me to be seeded in the second fastest heat. I fully expected to be bringing up the rear and, in spite of a 34-second opening lap, that was where I soon found myself. However, as I endeavoured to run an even pace I found myself picking off one runner after another and remaining in contact with the lead pack. Through the half in 2:21 and I was right on target. But I felt fresh and decided it was time to pick up the pace, and I slowly made my way up into third place. I could hear footsteps behind me as I attempted to sprint the final lap but I managed to hold onto 3rd and crossed the finish line in the very satisfying time of 4:39.4, equalling my best time of last year and tantalizingly close to a PR.
