It was great to finally race with the people that I work out with! Despite the cold and the hills it was an impressive showing by CRC. Congrats to all and thanks to Mark for the company and the tow up those hills! :) Drew

  • The Run for the Hope 10K Newport, Rhode Island

    Submitted by:
    Diane Sagnella Race Results Coordinator

This past Sunday Feliciano and I went to Newport RI to check out the Run for the Hope 10K. Feliciano ran very well with a time of 39:02 (6:17), Feliciano's Comments:

Let's start by saying that my goal was to run 38:30. Instead, I ran 39:02 (6:17). Am I disappointed?? No..... I actually think that I ran a good race!! This is the first 10K of the year for me. The last I ran was on the same course a year ago and the time was 41:28........ So, I shaved off 2 minutes and 26 seconds!! The only thing that went wrong the other day was the fact that the "pick up the pace in the second half" plan did not work because of an annoying (and strong) headwind on the way back!! I did increase the intensity of my run but I wasn't going any faster: it was like going slightly uphill (for about 2.5 miles)!!

    ciao

    feliciano

I, on the other hand having too much wine the night before, decided to sit this one out and wait until evening when a 3 miler in Boston was to be run. The race bore Bill Rodgers name, so I thought it would be a good one to do. I thought I could do it while Feliciano went to the North end to check out the latest saga in Italian soccer.

We took a nap in the middle of the afternoon having gotten up at 5:30 to get to Newport on time and were getting pretty exhausted. The alarm sounded at 3:30. I was hoping Feliciano would just let me sleep but he did not.

I didn't know exactly where the race was to be held, so we went into Feliciano's lab to check on Cool Running. Thinking the race to be in Boston I thought I could jog there as a warm up. The address said 'Andover, Landsdowne Boston, MA' I asked Yahoo to get the directions to the intersection of 'Andover and Landsdowne'. This intersection was ~7 miles away! I looked at my watch, it was 4:00. There was no way I was going to make it 7 miles in time to register, although I sure would have been warmed up by then. Ah... I wouldn't have to do it afterall! That was ok with me as I was feeling a bit lazy,

However, Feliciano, not wanting to disappoint me, called for directions and discovered the race was at THE Andover ON Landsdowne Stree, a mere 1 mile from our present location. Drats!

So Feliciano dropped me off and went to park the car before grabbing the T to the North End. The line for registration was immense! There was no way it could be cleared in time for the start of the race! I was about to leave when I found out that the long line was for people who wanted some sort of party pass for after the race, I opted to forgo that and went to post registration. I whipped out my pre-written check and asked rhetorically $18.00? "Twenty-Five" was the repsonse. Twenty-Five! Well, I almost left right there. Imagine $25,00 for a THREE miler! ButI thought Feliciano would be disappointed if I had not run, so I searched for an extra 7 dollars, got my number and went on my way.

It was 4:30. Hmmm... 5:00pm SHARP it said inthe application, so I started to jog to my office which was located only ~.35 of a mile away. Stopped at an intersection, I looked up and there was Feliciano! Hey, what are you doing here I asked? He responded, (and I kid you not he REALLY did say this) "I thought to myself what would I rather do? See a soccer game over an espresso with my friends or watch my girlfriend race."

Boy I was glad I had actually signed up at that point! So we went back and I started to warm up a bit. More and more people were filling the street. This was going to be immense. Feliciano was getting very excited. Slowly, however, we began to become aware that there didn;t appear to be any 'runners'. There were Hash-House Harriers scented with beer, Boxes with ribbons and bows, a sleigh with all 8 tiny reindeer, Balls in red, green, and gold. I overheard someone say 'There are no runners here,This is just a fun run,." I, a runner, was feeling a mighty bit out of place at a race! I was starting to feel rather ridiculous actually, especially when I realized I was the only one doing strides!

The 'gun' went off. (20 minutes late I might add) and we started our jog. After 1/2 mile I was contemplating just leaving. We weren't allowed to pass the police car, I was stuck behind the sedan sucking its exhaust and freezing! Furthermore, the red and blue flashing lights, creating a strobe effect, blinded and disoriented me. This was one $25.00 race I would not soon forget! A few others were experiencing similar distress, a few who like myself had no idea that this was not a race at all.

My time for the 3 miler? Well despite all the stops and slowing of pace I managed to come in in 18:48 (6:16)! Hmmm do you think it was accurate, after all it did bear Bill Rodgers name!
