The Great Stew Chase 15K, Lynn, MA Saturday February 6th 2000
Many CRC'ers showed up for this month's Race of the Month. Marcello Scippa led the way coming in just shy of the top ten for the rather large 1-39 age group. Mark Woods earned a 4^th place spot or the masters. Molly Turner was first amongst the CRC women coming 8th in her age group. Typical strong performances were given by all CRC runners

CRC was well represented at the Stew Chase 15k this past Saturday. At least 10 club members showed up to take advantage of the sunny 30 degree weather, the nice course, and lots of stew! I had moderate expectations for the race, given that I have been dealing with a nagging hamstring pain (and I've been avoiding any run longer than 5 miles like the plague). I just wanted to run well and end up in one piece. Beth mentioned that she wanted to shoot for about an 8-minute pace....that sounded reasonable, so I decided to try to stick with her and see how things went. Thanks to Beth's pacing, the C group women demonstrated once again that we are nothing if not consistent. Beth, me, and Lori ran together the whole 9.3 miles, at an even pace...and managed to do negative splits! I felt pretty good up until the last 2 miles or so, when I realized that Beth was going to start trying to prey on women she thought we (she?) could pass. I saw her eyeballing a woman up ahead of us and thought, Oh no, don't do it, Beth. Don't pick it up yet...I don't feel like running any faster.... But that was definitely what she had in mind as we knocked off that poor woman (and then another 3 or 4). All in all, I wasn't too disappointed with my finish. We ended up at 1:13 and change (7:54 pace), and I finished 4th in the nonexistent 19-29 age group.

The Ocala 1/2 Marathon and Marathon, Ocala, Florida.

Joe McCarty was on the road again. This time in sunny Florida!

The Ocala 1/2 Marathon and Marathon on 2/6/00.

This was a great race, with terrific organization and a beautiful route through the horse country of central Florida. In fact, I saw more horses than people along the course. I used this as a training run for Boston, doing about a 7:15/mile pace and coming across the finish line at about 1:35 plus a few seconds

There were two surprising things about this race. First of all, the temperature at the start was much colder than I expected. To beat the heat of the day, the race started at 7 AM, at which time the sun was just rising and the temp. was 29 F with a very heavy frost. I was completely underdressed in my shorts and t-shirt, but as soon as the sun rose the temps increased significantly and by 8:30 it was about 50-55 F. This course was also very hilly- imagine the first 13 miles of the Derry race. This region of Florida (Ocala is about 70 miles north of Orlando) is not as flat as believed.

GIve it a try if you ever have the chance...

The Bradford Valentines Day Road Race Haverhill, Ma.

A speedy couple takes first in the The Bradford Valentines Day Road Race and brings home more chocolate, Bruce Davie reports:

Two days before Cupid's official holiday, Missy Mendel and I received permission from our significant others to compete as a team in the Bradford Valentine's race. This unusual and popular race got off to a good start at registration time when they give each runner a carnation and a box of chocolates as well as the traditional shirt. The team competition comprises a certified 5 mile course and an uncertified 6k, and mixed gender teams of 2 compete with each half of the team running one of the distances. Having abandoned the plan of masquerading as either a married couple or a father-daughter team, Missy and I entered the "mixed open" division. We started together under sunny skies and 20-something temperatures, and soon parted ways as she took the low (6k) road and I took the high (5mile) road.

For the second time this year I had the chance to watch the back of star masters runner Craig Fram from a considerable distance. After a 5:35 first mile I started to move up through the pack, and then at about 3 miles our course merged back with the 6k course. Since we had run several extra miles in the interim, I found myself alongside a great multitude of middle-of-the-pack 6k runners who all seemed to be breathing a lot less heavily than I as I pushed to catch a few more of the 5 mile runners. In the end I took 8th place (4th for my agegroup) in a so-so time of 28:24. Meanwhile Missy had finished several minutes earlier in 22:47 as second woman for her distance, a welcome return to racing form for her after several months of injury. In a masterpiece of modern technology the race organizers managed to separate the 5mile results from the 6k results and correctly tabulate the team results, revealing the happy fact the Missy and I had taken first team place by a margin of about 90 seconds. Our prize? More chocolates.

Also spotted on the course was Jean-Dany Joachim running the 5-miler in 31:00.

Friday February 18th, 2000

USATF New England Indoor Championship Boston, MA,

Bruce Davie gives his reason for running indoors!

On Friday night, with snow accumulating outside at an inch per hour, it seemed the perfect opportunity to compete on the indoor track. Of course, there was the small matter of getting to the Reggie Lewis track, but the "T" proved resistant to winter weather and got me there on time. I was entered in the mile, and for once I found that I was not in the slowest heat, which was a good hint that I would have plenty of competition. Sure enough, the gun went off and after I had survived some jostling of elbows around the first lap I found myself near the rear of the 15 person field. Finishing the first lap I discovered that there was neither a split clock nor a human calling the splits, which meant that I now had little chance of establishing if the race was going according to plan or not. So I had to run the race purely on feel and hope for the best. Following my usual strategy of working hard in the third quarter of the race, I started to move up through the field, and eventually made it across the finish line in 11th place, with no idea what time I had run but knowing that there was nothing left in the tank. As it turned out, my time was 4:39.38, my best for the season and only 2.5 seconds away from my PR - a most satisfying result.
Later in the evening, as I was making my way home through the snow, Peter Gallimore ran the 800m and broke the 2 minute barrier with an impressive 1:59.45.

Friday February 18th, 2000

Foxboro 10 Miler & 5K Foxboro, MA

Drew Hanchett and Mark Woods ran through slush and snow at the Foxboro 10 Miler.

Drew reports:
Mark Woods and I headed down to Foxboro for a 10 miler on Sunday. the weather turned out to be beautiful and except for some slush and a bit of snow on the road, the conditions were good. The start however was chaos, nobody knew where the starting line was, the 300 runners were just milling around on some neighborhood street when approximately 5 minutes after the scheduled time some seemingly random start gun went off!
Mark and I were back in the dead middle of this pack and spent maybe a quarter mile bobbin' and weavin' to get free. Anyway the rest of the race went off without a hitch.
Mark turned in an impressive 40th place with a time of 63:41 and as for myself it was an average (at best) result of 57th at a time of 65:56. Definitely need to pick it up for the Melrose 1/2 next month
