Race of the Month

The Great Stew Chase 15-K
Saturday, February 7th --- Lynn

The following email message from race director Roger Perham sums up the unique down-home character of this mid-winter classic very well:

"Hi All,

Results, Results!!! This years Stew Chase race went without incident. Should we have postponed for lack of good winter conditions????? No snow, ice, zero temps. Just a great day for a winter run. There was a slight breeze, 50% overcast skies and 35 degree temps. Thanks to the 'army' of volunteers that helped (must have at least 60 overall). There were 208 pre-entrant and 199 post. This has been the recent trend. Runners are waiting to see how the weather is. They may miss the opportunity to purchase a race shirt but, oh well!!!"

A large group of CRC'ers recognized a good racing day when they saw one and made the trek to Lynn. Results are as follows (hope we didn't miss anyone):

Other February Races

February 10: Alden Invitational Track Meet (Providence, RI)
    Bruce Davie reports:

"Peter Gallimore and I represented CRC at the Alden invitational track meet at Brown University on Sunday. We both ran in the 800m, but Peter had the dubious privilege of running in the USATF-NE championship race, which was won in 1:51.14. (World indoor record, for comparison, is 1:42.67) Peter ran 2:03, just off his recent best (but maybe an indoor PR?). I ran in the 'unseeded' heats, and managed third in my heat, running a PR of 2:07.33.
Memories of my former life as a track runner are getting a bit rusty, but I think I set my old PR (2:08) in 1980, when I was exactly half my current age. CRC must be some sort of antidote to aging!"

February 22: New England Limited Track Meet (Boston)
    Bruce Davie reports:

"A couple of CRC runners turned out for a small USATF-sponsored meet at BU on Sunday. Bob Gillon showed the benefit of some focussed training and not running a 1500m race beforehand, to run a PR in the 3000m of 9:41.38. In the 800m, Peter Gallimore ran a well-paced race to set a PR of 2:00.89."
