Race of the Month

Cape Cod Times Marathon/Half-Marathon/5M in Hyannis,Sunday Feb 28th.

February's Race of the Month was held in Hyannis Mass. Races of a variety of distance were held, so just about anyone could find an event just for them!

Once again the weather presented an obstacle for runners to overcome in the latest of out of doors winter series of races. For half marathoners the wind and rain only threatened but for the full marathoners on the second lap of this circuit course perfect hypothermic conditions developed, with temperatures in the 30’s , wind blowing and thrown into the mix sleet and rain. So how is it that Allison Abbott sprinted around the final corner on the approach to the finish, stride and form still intact, head up, eyes alert and waving to her family and a contingent of CRC supporters? Allison was clearly prepared for toady’s race for in addition to looking fresh at the end, Allison was first in her division and fifth women overall. Her time of 3:31:46 qualifies her for next years Boston! Way to go All'! She offers these comments:

I ran the Cape Cod Times marathon on Sunday. We actually ended up getting a nice window of time in terms of weather, a little overcast, 40ish, and no rain until the very end. I ended up running 3:31:46 (I think), keeping really close to 8 minute pace, plus or minus 5-10 seconds until the last couple of miles. I thought I might be able to pick up the pace after 10 miles but I think my body locked into that pace and my brain was a little hesitant about those last 6 miles. The first 20 were remarkably easy, after that it got a little uglier, but not too ugly. I ran with two friends for most of the race and then we all faded to different degrees. For the last mile, mile and a half, my overwhelming desire was to just stop running and sit down. I had a good cheering squad with my family and Kathleen Cuniff so I figured stopping at that point was not an option. All in all, it was an enjoyable (??) experience. Can't wait to get back to shorter races though.

New member Dean McNabb was the second CRCer competing in the Marathon turning in a respectable 3:50:50 in the Senior Division.

For the less ambitious half marathons Adam Penn led the way. Adam has adhered to a rigorous training schedule that should prepare him for any upcoming marathon, yet Adam insists he isn’t planning on 26.2 until the fall. Adams’ performance earned him the new CRC ROM bonus gift (the amount of the prize will remain undisclosed in order to protect his amateur status). Joe McCarthy appears right on schedule for Boston with a strong 7:20 pace, those Blue Hill workouts with Chuck Dal Corobbo are paying off. Dave Quilty turned in a 1:39:20 which was between his target zones of 7:20 to 7:40, but just barely.

Also at Hyannis were old friend Frank Ribos and John Lee.

  • New England Grand Prix, Amherst, Ma.

Three venturesome club members trekked out to the nether regions of Western Massachusetts, Amherst to be precise, to the New England Grand Prix 10 Mile event. After a beautiful Saturday, one would have expected at least moderate conditions for Sunday. As the day began overcast, it quickly went downhill. Sprinkles began just before race time and during the race the conditions turned to sleeting rain. This weather did not help the course, which with many hills and some dirt roads, the footing become a little treacherous.

Caryn Gordon training for the Alaska Marathon in June, set a goal of running an 11:00/mile pace. She finished well below that goal finishing in 1:45:35 for a 10:34/pace. Caryn is running for the Leukemia society and has raised more than $4200 for her efforts. "I had little difficulty with the hills and was very pleased with my finish".

Jen Cooper training for Boston went into the event with a goal of running 1:30. She finished in 1:31:43. Pretty good predication considering the conditions and the course.

Running on just about 10miles/week, Bob Gillon was a little optimistic with his goals. He felt if he could run 6:00/mile pace he would be very happy. The course and his lack of conditioning had a definite impact on his final performance running a 1:03:42 or 6:23/mile pace. "I definately need to be more consistant with my weekly running. The hills certainly took a lot out of my overall time. I thought I was running very well but each split was telling me different. Ten miles per week just doesn't cut it".
