Race of the Month

Fresh Pond 2.25 & 4.5 - miler January 15th at 10:00am in Cambridge

Owing to severe mid-winter conditions it appears that the Fresh Pond Race was not well attended and may not have been run at all, as the Globe Scoreboard paged lacked an entry for Fresh Pond. In any event the champion of this CRC race of the month must go to Marcello Scippa who raced Fresh Pond a week before and a week after the scheduled ROM. Marcello most recently took first in the 2 1/2 miler in 13:48, and as listed previously took a second on January 8th.

    gloating in the sun!

    Greetings from sunny Key Largo!

I ran my first race in my new home on the first day of the new millennium - the Whale Harbor Inn 5K. I believe I have finally found my niche - I can be a slow runner and still win a medal! My running has plummeted to new record lows since I got here in October. I'm now rolling out of bed and running at 6:15 in the morning - not my best time. But the body is slowly adjusting and I'm finally getting beyond 3 mile runs. The New Year's Day race started at 8:30 a.m. (late by Florida standards - but after all it was the day after New Year's Eve) a little south of me in Islamorada. It drew a whopping 150 people (runners and walkers). It was a beautiful sunny, dry morning (not unlike most mornings here). I "sized up" my competition (running is not a big pastime here - curling the 16 oz. cans is). Met some people from the Greater Lowell Track Club who have also had the good sense to move here and we traded pleasantries about Lake Winnie. Shot out at a blistering 7:15 pace - far ahead of most of the runners, I might add. It was a flat course (oh, what a surprise). Tried to catch the woman ahead of me, tried to maintain that blistering 7:15 pace but, alas, it wasn't to be. Finished at a 7:30 pace - 23:14 time. A far cry from my 19:50 days, but a start at least. It still won me 4th woman overall and 1st master. Even broke out the racing flats and have been suffering shin splints ever since.

All in all, however, it did get me motivated. There aren't too many races here in the Keys, so I'll have to travel to Miami. Aside from that I love it here. I'm on or in the water most of the time. Can't imagine ever wearing tights and gloves again. For anyone who's interested in taking a field trip later in the Spring (and I'll send more info at a later date) the big race here in the Keys is the 7-Mile Bridge Race - yes, that's right you run point to point over the 7-Mile Bridge here in Marathon. I do miss those Wednesday night workouts! Happy New Year to all!
