CRC July 5 Miler series

The Harvard 5 Miler Harvard,MA

The CRC had yet aother proud showing at the Harvard 5 Miler in Harvard Mass. This course offers a beautifully shaded romp through the hills.

Bruce Davies account:

With July 4th starting off warm and humid - traditional holiday racing weather - I headed out to Harvard MA for the second time to run the very hilly 5 mile race. Having run 29+ minutes last year - 1.5 minutes slower than my PR pace - I figured that it would be a reasonable goal just to break 29. Soon after the gun went off I found myself in a lead pack running shoulder to shoulder with Jeff Townsend. In our matching CRC uniforms, I hoped that we looked as intimidating to our fellow runners as a couple of Kenyans in more elite competition (well, one can always dream). In the second mile, Jeff moved into first place and I settled into fourth, then dropped back to fifth on the big hill that seems to last for about 1.5 miles in the middle of the race. On the rare flat and downhill stretches I managed to pass a couple of runners to regain third place, and then entered the long downhill of the final mile, trying to make it into second. I managed to cut a 20 second deficit to 2 seconds, but the number 2 man had just enough final sprint to hold me off and I settled for third place - first in my agegroup - and an entirely satisfactory time of 28:32.

Missys view:

The Harvard 5 Miler is a good July race because most of the course is shaded, thankfully. Bruce and Peter warned me about the long hill in the middle of the race, and Bruce also warned that this course is at least a minute slower than a PR course. However, I also knew the last 2 miles were flat then downhill, and that eventually helped me.

I ran @ 6:00 pace for the first 2 and last 2 miles, but my split at mile 3, at the top of the long hill, was 7:15! By mile 2, I was in 2nd place for the women. Once I recovered from the long hill I began to close the gap between myself and the lead woman. I used my size and weight to my advantage in the last downhill mile and moved into the lead a half mile from the finish. I saw Ranjeet at the final turn into the school lot; I was so tired and happy to see him! But he yelled to me, "Run faster! Go!" so I picked it up as much as I could and crossed the line in 31:08, 12 seconds ahead of the 2nd place woman (who, it turns out, is the woman I tried so hard to catch in the Covered Bridges race but couldn't). The time is just about a minute off my PR, so Bruce was correct.

Marathon Sports 5 Miler Thursday July 13thWellesley, MA

Christy Muldoon

After the joy of driving to Wellesley from Somerville during rush hour, I arrived at the race course relaxed and ready to go. The plan was to go out conservatively and pick it up in the second half -- the least painful way to run the race. I realized that this was not going to happen at the first mile, which I crossed about 20 seconds ahead of my intended 6:50 start. However, I was able to gain this 20 second back in the second mile when I ran a bit slower than planned. At that point, I just decided to settle in for the ride, concentrating on maintaining a pace. Lucky me -- I swear the last 3 miles of the course were a softly sloping downhill. I was able to maintain my place, being passed by one woman (actually, a friend of mine from DC) and a handful of men (one of whom spit on my as he passed me -- I doubt it was intentional, but still). I wound up finishing at about 32:45, just 15 secs. off my PR. (editors note: good for a divisional fourth!)

I ran in the Wellesley race last night. my place was 44th, time of 30:44. One other person from CRC (I don't know his name) came in right in front of me, 43rd place, approximate time was 30:41 (that would be Tom O'Brien)

13th Annual Jim Kane Sugar Bowl 5 Miler Thursday July 20th South Boston, MA.

Perfect was the weather, nearly perfect were the performances. Over 2000 runners set out on the Sugar Bowl PR course. For Club CRC nearly 20 members ran while 10 of them earned top 20 positions in their respective divisions. So it seems the July 5 miler series for 'Race of the Month' was very successful. (Despite our best efforts we may have omitted some members from the results please let us know and it will be corrected.).

Drew Hanchett with Drews view:

I highly recommend registering for races at which many CRC'ers are also running. The Sugar Bowl 5-miler was not only a great race as far as weather and course were concerned but it had an enjoyable and realxed feel about it also. Hangin out withFelix and Christy and a few others prior, Tod during, and seeing a whole bunch more after was pleasant.

Oh yeah...the race...fast but not furious. Tod and I went out together and soon fell into a nice groove of just around 5:55 pace. We made small talk and ignored other racers erratic surges. At the turn around our pace seemed to quicken just a bit. Steady as she goes up till around 3 miles when Tod decides his patience has run out...he says something to the effect of "now is as good a time as ever"...I say I'll see you a bit later as I was not ready to go any faster. At about mile four we were shoulder-to-hip again turning them over a bit more often. Then the race began I moved infront but knew he was not dropping off then with about 400 meters to go he and his girrafe like strides past me and mumbled something like "lets see what kind of 400 speed you have". Well I normally do not sprint that hard at the end of a race but Tod brought it out in me and I managed to sneak past him in the last 10-15 meters. We finished basically together...and it was fun!! Good job too all!

  • Fairlee Great Triathlon in Vermont

Scott Duhaime continues his recovery from life by competing in the Fairlee Great Triathlon in Vermont on July the 9th. His first competition as a Clydesdale (yes, it's gotten THAT BAD folks) had him finishing more than 8 minutes behind his pace of 1998 for the same distances: 3/4 mile swim, 24 mile bike, 5 mile run. Swimming the cold, calm waters of Lake Morey in a lethargic 28:02 (349 out of 494), he caught up to the middle of the pack on the hilly bike course (1:14:19, including both transitions - 167/494), and overcame cramping kidneys to complete the run around Lake Morey in 35:38 (217/494). His 2:17:59 was good for 219th overall. Does he miss Wednesday workouts with the CRC? Results don't lie. Someday, he'll make the drive into Cambridge once again.
