Newburyport Homecoming Road Race
Tuesday, July 30th, 6:30pm, Newburyport, MA

The CRC gang headed up to Newburyport on their annual mid-week pilgrimage to take part in the Homecoming festivities that culminates in two fine road races. Unusually cool temperatures in the 70's (the last two years were in the 90's), led to some very fast times amongst the crew. Running in the three mile race was Bob Gillon, successfully defending his Master's title from 1995 and placing 10th overall in a scintillating 16:22 (5:28). Bob had enough left to "jog" miles 4-9 on the ten mile run, while introducing two club members who hadn't yet met!

The two who hadn't met were Jim Reardon and Bruce Davie, but Bruce recognized Jim's club singlet - what do you mean, you don't have a singlet? Click here to fix that - and was running with him. Jim just knicked him by four places at the wire to finish 161st overall in 1:00:09, while Bruce finished in 1:00:24, PR's for both gentlemen; they are knocking on the door to the Ten Miles an Hour club!

Also competing in this year's race were Tim Stratford, Sharon Benedict, Jeff Phillips the Elder, Ronnie Trippett, Frank Gribos, Martha Dannies and Linda Gillon. Check out all their times in the chart below.

Other July Races:

July 2nd
  • They never miss a party...Brian Barringer, Keith Kennedy and Missy Mendel drank five...er, ran a 5K in Newton on a sultry Thursday evening. The Marriott Twilight Run is not only held for a great cause (MS), but is the site of one of the best post race parties around (if you don't mind mosquitos). They all earned their beer, however. Brian came in 23rd overall and 11th in his age group with his blistering time of 17:39 (5:42), followed immediately by Keith in 24th place in 17:42 (5:43), who finished as the 2nd master's runner. Missy set a PR in 19:09, and took the 3rd female spot, 2nd in her age group, and her 6:11 splits carried her to 80th place overall.
July 4th
  • Do do do do do, do do do do do do...(sung to the tune of the 1812 overture). July 4th is probably the best day during the year to run a race, with hundreds to choose from. Here are some of the holiday efforts turned in by CRC members this year
  • The Dedham 10K is truly a 10K now, Bill Cohn and Al Nagel PR's of years past may be slightly tainted...but that didn't stop Jim Reardon from setting his own PR in 36:54 (5:57) to place 13th out of 282 and win a beverage cooler. The 40:54 (6:35) turned in by Scott Duhaime may not have been a PR, and his 42nd place finish didn't win him a cooler, but he's not trading his $25 restaurant gift certificate raffle prize with Jim!
  • Marcello Scippa started his holiday weekend with a bang by coming in 6th overall and 1st in his division at the Minuteman Classic '96 in Concord. Marcello ran this 5 miler in 30 minutes flat (6:00).
  • The Hingham July 4th Road Race is held amidst the serene settings of Hingham Harbor; serene when hundreds of heavy breathing runners aren't disturbing the peace! Three CRC runners chose this race of unusual distance (4.6 miles) for their holiday workout. Al Nagel took 7th in the seniors division and 109th overall with his effort of 30:02 (6:32). Jeff Phillips was the 31st master's runner and 176th overall in a time of 31:17 (6:48), while Ginny Carlin was breathing down his neck in 31:48 (6:55), to finish as the 2nd master's female and 208th overall.
  • Up in Boxboro, they run a 5 mile race called the Jennifer Tinney Memorial Run. CRC marathon master Ronnie Trippett ran the 5 in 35:01 (7:00), taking 19th master and 67th overall, then went out and ran 21 more (just kidding). On his heels was Chucky Schultz as the 20th master and 73rd overall, in 35:34 (7:07).
  • Missy Mendel not only ran her second race of the holiday weekend, but set her 2nd 5K PR in two days and took home the first place women's trophy by finishing 1 second ahead of the number two female! Missy's time of 18:57 at the Independence Day 5K in Pittsfield was 12 seconds faster than her Thursday race in Newton, and her 6:07 pace carried her to 51st overall.
  • Bruce Davie ran the 18th annual Tri-Valley Front Runners 10K in Millis. His 36:53 (5:57) placed him 6th overall.
July 6th
  • Ah, Fresh Pond! It's like home to Marcello Scippa, who must know this course inside and out by now. He chose the 2.5 mile loop and came in 4th, in 13:29 (5:24).
  • Taking 13th overall in North Falmouth at the Paul E. White Memorial Run was Derek Mess, whose time of 29:31 (6:08) was good for 7th in his age group over this 4.81 mile course.

  • Just 6 days after claiming the first spot on the Vineyard, Bob Gillon came back to the mainland to finish first by 47 seconds at the 10K Pancake Run in Hamilton. Bob ran through two bands of showers in 35:33, which incredibly enough doesn't add up to 5:38's; just 5:44's. Guess you can't set your watch by him! Joining him in the post race feast of, yup, you guessed it - pancakes - were Ron Trippet, Ann Tassinari and Linda Gillon. Ronnie finished in 45:22 (7:19) as the 2nd Senior Male and 13th overall, Ann was the 2nd Female, first Master's Female and 19th overall in 48:39 (7:51) while Linda was the 4th Female, 2nd Master's Female and 23rd overall in 55:45 (8:59).
  • Back in Cambridge, Marcello Scippa hit his favorite course again; the Fresh Pond 5 mile Saturday series. This time his 5:49 pace earned him 4th place, finishing in 29:07, and his shoes will be dry by Wednesday's practice!
July 14th
  • In an incredible triathlon debut, Scott Duhaime finished 30th overall and fourth in his age group at the Holliston Lions Triathlon put on by F.I.R.M. In his first ever competitive swimming event, Scott swam the 1/2 mile course in 15:30, surviving several kicks to the head and a hand grabbing his ankle. After a quick transistion, he peddled 15 miles in 42 minutes, avoiding cars, lots of potholes and many bikers over the tight course consising of three five mile loops. He then had enough left to run 5 miles in just under 35 minutes, picking up four more spots, for an overall time of 1:33:57 as the 25th person to cross the line. When asked by the local cable TV crew if he was planning to do the Iron Man, Scott laughed and said "absolutely...NOT!" and headed over to the massage tables.
July 17th
  • Now we know why Marcello Scippa didn't come to track this Wednesday night; he was off to the Lowell Track Racing Series performing in the two mile event, and garnered a PR for himself of 10:30 (5:15). The gauntlet's been thrown, Group A runners!
July 18th
  • Last Year's Sugarbowl Race in South Boston was a send off for Jennifer West and a huge turnout for the CRC, but only three members joined the throngs this year; Bill Stathis pulled down a handy 31:17 (6:15) while Ginny Carlin "crawled" in with a 37:40 (7:33). Our star Clydesdale runner Derek Mess took home is second first place finish of the year in this category, completing the course in 30:23 (6:04). Occasional member and Kung Fu Tai Chi Institute San Shou (kickboxing) star Kim Ryan also completed the SugarBowl 5 miler 40.06 (8:01). Give her plenty of room on the roads!
July 20th
  • Encouraging results for Jim Reardon at Fresh Pond--cool morning yields decent time over the five mile course; an eighth place finish in 28:44 (5:45). says Jim "Just wait until Topsfield!"
July 21th
  • Don't let this happen to you! Ever in search of adventure, Scott Duhaime joined about 60 or 70 other runners to take on the Great Blue Hill Trail Race on a pristine Sunday morning. This 7.2 mile challenge consists of many highly technical rock sections, single track trail, gravel road and nearly 1000 vertical feet, including climbing Great Blue Hill twice! Scott was in seventh place with a mile to go when unbeknowst to him, he took a wrong turn on the top of Blue Hill (no doubt overcome with the crystal clear views - one could see beyond Mt. Monadnock) and came across the finish line backwards, immediately disqualifying him from the race. He actually ran about a 1/4 mile further, and finished in 1:19. There were others who made the same mistake, as the trail was not well marked at that point of no return. Although extremely disappointed and sore, he was happy with his effort.
July 25th
  • The man who fell to Earth: trying to cap off a spectacular month of racing, Marcello Scippa and 13,000 other runners ran through the streets of Boston at the Chase Corporate Challenge. His 19:45 (5:39) time beat 12,800 others, but he wasn't satisfied with the performance, but Team Lotus sure was; they came in fouth. Also competing in the nerd category was Tom Kutter for Open Market. Tom was happier than Marcello with his time of 22:57 (6:33).
July 27th
  • The Frank Kelly Memorial Meet in Quincy is held at Memorial Stadium for youngsters ages 14 and down. It's a whole morning of track and field events, including 800, 400, 200, 100 & 50 meter heats, high jump, long jump and shotput field events. CRC was represented by it's two youngest members, Alex and Max Pineau, who are 9 and 6 respectively, and were cheered on by their uncle, Scott Duhaime. Alex placed 6th in his heat for the 400 in 1:35:00, 5th in his heat in the 100 in 18.22, and 3rd in his age group for the long jump with a leap of 8" 5'. Max took a circuitous route in the 50 to finish in 12.5 seconds. It's truly a blast to watch the little ones try and stay in their lanes!
  • Ginny Carlin continues to improve from one race to another. She ran the five mile Cranberry Classic in Carver on this glorious summer saturday, grabbing third place in the female master's division in 35:40 (7:09).
