Fourth of July Races (and Non-Races)

Lincoln 4th of July Road Race (Lincoln) --- 4.125 Miles (or thereabouts)
CRC represented 10% of the entrants in the 4-mile+ version of this little-known but scenic race. It was hot, humid, and hilly but everyone enjoyed the race. Scott, pushing his daughter, tried to nip Al at the finish; but Al heard them coming and refused to yield. After all, age has its privileges!
Runner Time Overall Place Division Place
Bill Cohn 27:21 9 3
Al Nagel 28:38 13 2
Scott Duhaime (pushing Catherine) 28:42 14 4
Steve Barney 30:49 20 6
Janice Smaga 31:15 23 3

Hingham 4th of July Road Race (Hingham) --- 4.7 Miles
A few more runners (try about 1,400 more) in this traditional South Shore Race --- but not quite as many CRC'ers. Jeff reported on Wednesday that he had already conceded the race to Ginny --- and he was right.
Runner Time Overall Place Division Place
Ginny Carlin 33:42 207 4
Frank Gribos 33:54 218 51
Martha Dannies 40:02 707 81
Jeff Phillips 41:58 852 164

 Dedham 10-K Classic (Dedham) --- 10-K
    Bruce Davie reports

"Marcello and I represented CRC in the Dedham 10k Classic on July 4th.

Conditions were rather hot and hilly, but I was able to run a PR, this being the first 10k I've run in 12 months. I finished 12th overall in 35:26 (5:42) and Marcello was 23rd in 37:06 (5:58)."

 12th Annual Independence Day 5-K (Pittsfield) --- 5-K
Melissa Mendel continues to shine, winning first place in the womens' race in 18:19 and finishing 36th overall. Read all about it in the Berkshire Eagle.

Lynnfield Couples Club Road Race (Lynnfield) --- 3.8 Miles
Bob Gillon ran 21:08 to finish fourth overall and capture the Masters trophy. You can read all the details in "Gillon Fights Off Hamstring Problems to Win Masters Division of Lynnfield Race" in the July 10th issue of the Peabody & Lynnfield Weekly News (if you happen to have a copy kicking around the house).

19th North Andover 4th of July Race (North Andover) --- 10-K
CRC newcomer Charlie Annaloro showed the benefits of a couple of track workouts by running 53:22 (an 8:36 pace) to finish 297th overall. Congratulations, Charlie!

Jennifer Tinney Memorial Road Race (Boxford) --- 5 Miles
Before any results were in, we received the following saga from "guess who?!*!?*?":

"I have made plans for months to be in Boxford for the 5 miler on the fourth of July which is a local bragging rights affair. There is a brunch afterwards and a good social time. I got up early to get the fruit on the cheesecake and get prepared for the race with my asthma spray and pollen pill. Lily got ready and off we went the ten minutes to the race start about six miles away. I got to the sign up table, surprized and happy there was no line and asked for my number. The kind, sweet lady asked me "for what". "The five mile race of course" I said. Still sweet as ever, she said "but that started ten minutes ago and everyone is gone".

Dumbstruck and dumb, I stumbled over to my father who had come to watch and announced my latest adventure in not reading things completely or thoroughly. I felt like a dead atheist. All dressed up and no place to go. Another friend showed up in the same predicament , so we ran the race course anyways. Even though we started 20 minutes late, we still passed people and were not the last finishers though we were the most embarrassed. Still ran a respectable 35 minutes for a training run.

At least the cheesecake and pie was a success. Got to remember to put those race applications on the refrigerator to check on."

Both Sandy Newman and Ron Trippett arrived in time for the race. Ron ran 36:11 (a 7:15 pace) to finish 63rd overall and Sandy ran 36:56 (a 7:24 pace) to finish 73rd and 4th female master. Unfortunately, Beth Bouthot reports that she got all of her race information from "guess who?!*!?*?" and missed the start; so she ran the course as a training run. Wonder if she ran into good old "guess who?!*!?*?" out there?

Other July Races

 July 2: Pro Staff/Marriott Twilight Run (Waltham) --- 5-K
Melissa Mendel, Marcello Scippa, and newcomer Jackie Erath started the holiday weekend early by enjoying this 5-K run through Waltham and Newton. Melissa ran 17:56 (a torrid 5:47 pace) to place 40th overall and 3rd in her age group. This is a PR for Missy --- by a full minute!! Marcello ran 17:06 (a 5:31 pace) to finish 19th overall and 11th in his age group. And in her first race in three years, Jackie ran an impressive 23:00 (a 7:25 pace) to finish 314th overall. A very competitive race!

 July 5: Marianne's Run the Chop (Martha's Vineyard) --- 5-Miles
Peter Gallimore and Ranjeet Sudan ventured down to Martha's Vineyard for the weekend and came back with a couple of trophies. Peter won his second race in three weeks running 28:13 (a 5:39 pace) and Ranjeet captured third place and his age group running 29:58 (a 6:00 pace). CRC has now won this race two years in a row (Bob Gillon won in '96). Seems like this should be our Race of the Month in July of '98!!

July 10: Marathon Sports Road Race (Wellesley) --- 5-Miles
Kerry Kirkendall, newcomer Bonnie Zucker, Al Nagel, Brian Barringer, Dave Quilty, and George Morgan all showed up to run on this beautiful summer night. Unfortunately the times were fouled up so these are all the available facts: Brian, Kerry, and Bonnie all ran PR's --- Brian in 29:15 (I think) and Kerry in 32-something. Bonnie reports: " I did it in 45:40, which was actually 3:30 shorter than I did it in last year, so I guess this was a PR for me!". In the non-PR category, Al ran 33:58 and Dave was a few seconds behind him. We don't have a reliable time for George.

July 12: The Pancake Run (Hamilton) --- 10-K
There was an excellent CRC turnout (particularly in the female masters group) for this low-key (33 runners) race. For those of you who've never run it, the pancake breakfast afterwards is awesome. Sandy Newman (47:23, 17th, 2nd master), Janice Smaga (47:39, 18th, 3rd master) and Ann Tassinari (49:41, 22nd, 3rd master) upheld our strong womens' masters tradition. And Ron Trippett ran 46:35 to win the 50+ age group and finish 15th overall.

July 13: Greater Beverly YMCA Duathlon (Beverly) --- Duathlon
    Chuck Schultz reports:

"Sunday I took part in a duathon with a friend of mine in Beverly at the YMCA. The run was 3.4, the bike was 25 miles and the run again was 3.4 miles. The pollen season is finally over so I was able to run alot better doing 6:40 avg. for the first run. My partner went out in first place for teams but came back in third by eight minutes. I avg. 6:55 for the next 3.4 which kept us in 3rd place out of 13. We were happy and the food was good."

July 13: Holliston Lions FISK Triathlon (Holliston) --- Triathlon
    Scott Duhaime reports:

"Much to the angst of my wife, I competed in Holliston Lions FISK triathlon Sunday, July 13. We were coming back from vacation, and were moving the next day (two house closings on the same day!), so we were completely stressed out. Of course, working out is my release, so I completed the 1/2 mile swim in 15:23 (surviving incredible amount of weeds), the 15 mile bike in 40:20 (with a 2 minute transition - 21.5 mph avg.), and the 5 mile run in 35:16 (7:03), coming in 46th out of 208 in 1:33. The story ends happily, as we did sell our house and bought a new on in Stow, MA, great running and biking country.

Saw old friend Kim Blair, who finished in the top fifteen. Kim is training for the Hawaiian Ironman, and was coming off a week of 200 miles on the bike, 45 miles running, and 5 miles swimming, so this was a short event for him. He is engaged to a woman also named Kim, they are getting married in September, and will honeymoon, in yes, Hawaii."

July 24: Sugar Bowl Road Race (South Boston) --- 5-Miles
An excellent night for running (68 degrees, 15 mph winds) in what is usually a real steambath. All of the half dozen CRC'ers ran very well (2 PR's) in this large field of about 1400 runners. I apologize in advance for any errors in the results (I didn't have my glasses with me). Did note, however, that the results had Derek winning the womens' 30-39 age group; obviously, the scorers have never met our ace Clydesdale.

 July 29: Yankee Homecoming (Newburyport) --- 10-Miles & 3-Miles
Another excellent night for running in what is usually the mother of all saunas. Some very impressive times for CRC'ers who showed up in force for this popular race.
