Bunker Hill 8K
Sunday, June 16th, 9:30am, Charlestown, MA

The June Race of the Month coincided with Father's Day this month, as seven CRC runners joined 512 other finishers in the Battle of Bunker Hill 8K in Charlestown, Massachusetts. Rob Spitler of Spitler Race Systems writes: "The Charlestown Boys & Girls Club again put on the Road Race prior to the parade. With the Navy Yard as a backdrop and Old Ironsides as a reminder that age is not a handicap the 8K event runs again. The tourists get to use their cameras for another pupose. Can't you imagine the comment back in Iowa about this road race while they were visiting Old Ironsides and watching the Bunker Hill Parade?"

Our own Jim Reardon adds:
I decided to run after looking at the CRC web site (editor's comment: smart guy!): the CRC's honor was at stake! It was a nice day for a run, and there were a lot of kind people with spray hoses along the route, which only went up Bunker Hill once (not twice like it used to). Al and Kerry and Brian and Dave Q. and Janice and PJ were there. I ran 29:06 but put on a good finish, 'so while there is no cause for alarm there is no room for complacency!

Other June Races:

June 1st
  • Always a great draw, the Corrib Pub 5K had nearly 400 runners compete on a hilly couse through the neighborhoods of West Roxbury. Ben I took the 10th spot in 17:43 (5:43), while Brian Barringer came home to his old haunts to finish 14th in 18:08 (5:51).
  • Two CRC masters runners floated over to Nantucket Island to compete in the 14th Annual Cranberry Challenge and both had excellent results, proving once again that nothing improves performance like a weekly track workout. Jeff Phillips and Ginny Carlin have both been showing up regularly on Wednesday nights for the last month or two, and Jeff finished this 10K in 46:16 (7:27) while Ginny took home the first place master's women's trophy with a time of 46:35 (7:30).
  • Sandy Newman Levy reports that she "beat Chuck Schulz" in a 5+ mile race in Hamilton, but divulged neither time, nor race information. She did mention, however, that she was the first master's female to finish! We understand that Al Nagel ran it too, but was negligent in reporting this info to the CRC Webmaster. Reticent runners will be required to run an additional 800 at 5K pace at the end of every workout!
June 2nd
  • Ever run a ten mile race and finish dissatified with the challenge? Looking for a true leg tester and lung burner? Run a mountain race! Bill Cohn and Scott Duhaime did just that as they attacked the Temple Mountain Ten Miler that climbs to top of Pack Monadnock in New Hampshire. As part three of a four stage mountain race series that culminates with the Mount Washington Road Race, the Temple Mountain course offers a 2000 vertical foot climb with sections steeper than anything found on New England's highest peak. The first mile went straight up, then rambled and rolled for six more miles through beautiful country roads consisting of blacktop, gravel and sandy surfaces, following a general uphill grade with a few steep pitches before getting real serious over the last few miles. This is not a race to attemp negative splits! The hardy CRC duo saw their pace drop off significantly as the road angled higher and higher towards the sun on this warm June day. Scott hit seven miles at a 7:43 pace, then took a half an hour to grind out the final three, his splits degenerating to 8:39, 9:44 and 11:39. Bill ran the first eight in exactly eight minute splits, but then was slowed by the torturous section on Route 101 and hit the headwall hard upon entering Miller State Park, gutting out the last two miles in 27 minutes. This race was won by the amazing Dave Dunham, who was the only person to finish in under an hour, incredibly averaging less than a 6 minute/mile pace. These types of races bring out a different breed of runner, but Bill and Scott had plenty of company as several hundred individuals couldn't come up with better weekend plans on this 80 degree day! Maybe it was the awesome home baked goods handed out at the end. To top it all off, the runners had to turn around and walk 1.5 miles back down the steepest sections to the Temple Mountain Base Lodge!
  • Marcello Scippa ran the Schofield School 5K Road Race in Wellesley as a warmup for his two mile track race (see below) in 5:45's, finishing 12th overall and 3rd the men's 20-29 bracket, in 17:52.
June 5th
  • The GBTC Relays in Cambridge marked the fifth straight weeks of exciting meets at the little track that could at MIT, as olympic hopefuls, kids and weekend warriors entered events of varying distances. Marcello Scippa competed against a strong, open field in the two mile, finishing in a spirited 10:37.
June 6th
  • Fresh of his "long run", Ronnie Trippett took to the trails ahead of the CRC cross country team (see June 9th) and ran a 7.2 mile race in 56:27 (7:50).
June 8th
  • Bruce Davie chickened out of the Great Steeplechase (see below), but ran Fresh Pond on Saturday, finishing 4th in 29:25 (5:53).
June 9th
  • The CRC cross country team of Tom Kutter and Scott Duhaime joined a spirited group of about a hundred or so to compete in the 15th Annual Great Lincoln Steeplechase. The Steeplechase is a 6.5 mile trail race over the Lincoln trail system, leaving from St. Anne's Church on Rte 126. Although there are no hay bales to hurdle, there was one fallen tree to climb over, some steep hills (some very steep hills!) and plenty of single track running. The scenery is as diverse as the terrain, circling Sandy Pond and the DeCordova Museum through woods with rocks and roots, and fields with waist high grass. One tricky section has runners crossing a long series of narrow planks through a swamp; don't fall in! There were some excellent runners - the winning time was 37:30. No way anyone's breaking 5's on this course! Scott came in 27th in 46:05 (7:05) while Tom took 38th in 48:07 (7:24).
  • Al Nagel decided tar running was for him, and headed to Revere along with Sarah Keniston, and ran the Not Quite 5 MGH Run vs. Drugs Road Race. Al was the first master's male to cross the line and 17th overall, running comfortably with 6:40's (32:42). Sarah completed the 4.9 mile course in 43:30 (8:53), good enough for 4th in her age/gender bracket (F30-39) and 60th overall.
June 11th
  • Busy Ron Trippett ran a 10K in 45:17 (7:18), to place as the 6th senior.
June 14th
  • The Swampscott Dory Run was the place for Chuck Schultz and 7:05 was the pace for five miles as he ran it in 35:25
June 16th
  • Bunker Hill 8K, race of the month
  • Derek Mess beat all the other big men and took first place in the Clydesdale division in the Koury's 4.13 mile road race in Somerville. Derek's time of 24:40 was good enough for 18th overall, at the pace of 5:58/mile. Never ask a big man how much he weighs!
June 21st
  • At the Waltham YMCA Twilight Classic, Al Nagel took the 1st senior's male trophy with his time of 20:42. Al covered the 5K distance in 6:40 style.
June 23rd
  • CRC TRIATHLON TEAM STRIKES GOLD!!! Four CRC Members participated in the Ashland Lions Triathlon put on by F.I.R.M., including a three person mixed team that took first place in that division, and Kim Blair, who entered as an individual athelete. Kim was the 10th man out of the water and bookended it with a strong run, but the rolling hills on the bike leg drained him of energy, and he finished 35th in 2:27, "easily my worst triathlon in 2 years," he exclaimed. We think it's A W E S O M E. Meanwhile, stringing together three strong legs were Sue Dahl, Scott Duhaime and Bill Cohn, to finish with the gold in Mixed Team and the silver in overall Team Competition. Overcoming a chilly and delayed start, hand to hand combat and choppy water, Sue swam her mile in 26:39. As she climbed onto the beach, her wet suit clinging to her like a second skin, she was met by husband Bill and their 2 1/2 year old daughter Charlotte. In a lightning flash, Bill handed her the toddler, and ran the quarter mile up the steep embankment to the bike rack, causing one onlooker to exclaim, "I've seen a baton passed in a relay, but never a baby!" Upon reaching the bikes, Bill tagged Scott, and he was off on a 26 mile ride, which included two 13 mile loops of rolling hills. Coming out of the hill in Hopkinton at the start of the Boston Marathon, Scott reached speeds of over 40 mph, and averaged just over 22 mph, completing his section in 1:13. At this transition, the team was just a minute back of 1st place, and it was up to Bill to put on the jets for the final 6 mile run. He passed the first place mixed team runner about half way through and never looked back, finishing his leg in 39 minutes. The final tally was 2 hours, 19 minutes and 31 seconds, a new mixed team record, the second team to finish, good for the 27th place overall!
  • Missy Mendel was the third female to cross the line at the 2nd Children's Museum of Easton 5 Miler and the second in her bracket, with a time of 32:45 (6:33).
June 28th
  • Beth Bouthot ran her first race since Boston; an undisclosed yet hilly 5K in 23:39 (7:35). Sounds like a PR, but she's not bragging; guess you'll just have to "Ask Beth!" We did, and this is what she said;
I wish I could race more, but we were looking for a house to buy before our lease ran out, now we're looking for a house to rent since our lease is up August 31. It's so dreadful, the vacancy rate is 1.4% and you really have to move fast! If you hear of anything let me know!
June 29th
  • A small but spirited group turned out for the Three Churches Run up in Hamilton, MA, including our own Chuck Schultz. Chuck got his name in the globe for finishing 5th, completing the 5 miles in 35:23 (7:05).
June 30th
  • Not satisfied with his earlier performance, Kim Blair completed his 2nd triathlon in a week, and this time, held together well on the bike. At The Greater Hartford Triathlon, Kim was in the swim with 20:56 over 1.5K, biked 40K in 1:13:17 and ran 10K in 43:28 to finish 30th overall in 2:17:41. Kim states that "The bike is downhill for the first half and straight up for the second half!! Run was quite hilly as well." Hey bud, if they made 'em easy, everyone would do it!
  • Dereck Mess went to the cape and didn't just hang out at the beach; he came in 33rd at the Chatham Harbor 10K. His time of 38:38 (6:14) was good for 4th in his age bracket.
  • New member Mike Albert kicked off a three week vacation in Sweden, but not before competing in the POW-MIA Memorial 10K in South Boston. Hoping to break 40 minutes, he shattered it and finished in 38:08 (6:09), good for 11th in his age group and 46th overall! He says, "Yeah, results for the homepage! I feel like a member now!"
