Race of the Month

First Annual Marion 5-K Road Race
Marion, MA --- Saturday, June 21st

A large group of CRC'ers made the early morning trip to Marion for a very scenic 5-K tour of this classic New England village. The weather was hot (but not oppressive), the terrain was quite flat, and, despite many turns, most agreed that the course was probably a bit short. So none of us could be too unhappy with our times!

The two highlights of the morning were a CRC runner breaking the tape on both the female and the male side. Melissa Mendel continued her exceptional string of quality races by winning the womens' race in 17:38 while Peter Gallimore blistered his way to the mens' title in 15:30. Ginny Carlin and Janice Smaga also went home with trophies after finishing first and second respectively in the Womens' Masters division. As further indication of CRC's domination, 5 club members placed in the top 14. The only negative aspect of the race from a CRC viewpoint was Bob Gillon pulling up lame (with a hamstring cramp) at the halfway point. Congratulations to everyone who competed! Full CRC race results are provided below.

After the race we all adjourned to Derek Mess's beach house a few miles away for a cookout, sailing, swimming, and general good cheer. Many thanks to Derek for inviting us all and for being such an excellent host. Maybe (hopefully) this will be the start of an annual CRC event. Late in the day we all left Marion with tired legs, full stomachs, and sunburnt faces. What more can you ask from a June day?

Other June Races

June 1: Schofield School Road Race (Wellesley) --- 5-K
    Peter Gallimore reports:

"Marcello and I raced fairly well. Our times might not reflect that. It was a very hilly course. Marcello was 10th overall with a time of 17:31 running a 5:39 pace. I was 6th overall with a time of 17:04 (race pace 5:30). Marcello was 7th in the age-group 18-39, and I was second in the same age group."
June 1: Corrib Pub Classic (West Roxbury) --- 5-K
Brian Barringer ran a 17:57 (5:49 pace) to finish 29th overall. "Although faster than my time time last year, not a PR."
June 7: Northeastern Twilight Track Meet (Dedham)
    Bruce Davie reports:

"I can second the strong recommendation given by Jim Reardon to the track meets at Northeastern which are now, sadly, finished for the season. With a competitive field and perfect running conditions, both Marcello and I were able to set PR's in the 3k. I ran 9:14.35, while Marcello ran 9:40.81. For me, this broke one of my oldest PR's, which I set 13 years ago at the age of 20, back in the days when I trained only for track racing. Nice to find that old age isn't yet slowing me down."
 June 12: James J. Connolly TGI (Woburn) --- 5-Miles
Derek Mess ran this Thursday night special in 29:41 (5:56 pace) to finish 16th overall. He won the Clydesdale division, as he so often does, beating his nearest competitor by a minute per mile (yup, five minutes).
 June 15: Khoury's Summer Steamer (Somerville) --- 4.13-Miles
Ed..... Some races skimp on everything. Then there's this little gem of a race. T-shirts for everyone, 5-year age groups for the over-40 set (right up to 80), plenty of water stops, and the food --- burgers, hot dogs, chicken, bagels, bananas, muffins, lots of drinks, and on and on. They even put ice cubes in the water cups at the start/finish. Paul Collyer and the Somerville Road Runners deserve a lot of credit for a first class event. Next year I hope they get twice as many runners. I certainly plan to tell lots of people about this race!!
Unfortunately for the rest of you, only three CRC runners showed up in Somerville. Bob Gillon finished 8th in 22:52 to win the 45-49 age group. Derek Mess finished 17th in 24:19 to win another Clydesdale division. And, Al Nagel finished 56th in 28:30 to finish second in the 55-59 age group. Team CRC (Bob, Derek, and Al) also finished second in the Open Mens' Team division; but we didn't get credit for it --- we think it's because we were each in a different age division (although it's probably because we didn't register correctly).
June 15: Bunker Hill Day Road Race (Charlestown) --- 8-K
    Bruce Davie reports:

"It was a wild and crazy day at Charlestown, with almost as much excitement off the course as on. Before the start, Brian Barringer and I were accosted by a Clydesdale runner who seemed intent on a pre-race fight, after he had apparently taken offence at the way we positioned ourselves in front of him at the starting line. Brian was polite to a fault and managed to calm him down, but apparently this was to be Brian's day for physical altercations, as he was involved in another one at the finish, when another runner attempted to pass Brian with the aid of his elbows. As Brian put it, the fact that he escaped without a black eye was satisfying enough, and improving on his time from last year by 11 seconds was a pure bonus.

There was a good CRC turnout for this scenic race in weather conditions that were as close to perfect as one could ask for in June. This is a great PR course, if only because 8k is such an unusual distance. In the men's competition, I finished 15th in 27:34, Brian was 29th in 29:35, and Dave Quilty was 75th (14th master) in 33:26. In the women's competetion, Kerry Kirkendall took 9th place in 33:30, while Ginny Carlin (37:07) and Janice Smaga (37:46) took 3rd and 4th masters places respectively."
June 18: Louise Rosetti Race for Women (Beverly) --- 5-K
    Melissa Mendel reports:

"Just heard from Sandy Newman-Levy. She ran the Louise Rosetti 5K in Beverly last night in the pouring rain. In her first race of the season, she finished in 22:10 (9th in her age division, 65th overall). I think it's traditionally a very fast women's race and Sandy was very pleased with her time. She says she's getting ready for Lake Winnipesaukee and plans to be back on the track next Wednesday."
 June 28: North Shore Half-Marathon (Swampscott) --- 13.1 Miles
Bob Gillon ran a 1:21:08 to finish as the 8th male overall and the 2nd master. This was all done "with a hamstring pull for 10 miles". Awesome!!
June 29: Friends of the Fourth Road Race (Sharon) --- 5-Miles
Al Nagel ran a 33:48 (6:46 pace) to finish 46th overall and 5th in the 50-59 age group. "It was very hot (about 80 degrees) but I always enjoy this run around Lake Massapoag."
