Race of the Month

Swampscott Half Marathon/5k
Seven members of the CRC community turned out for the race of the month. With a first, a second, and a fourth, a memorable day for CRC occurred.

As the runners lined up it was bright and sunny, and many of us sought out some shade. Fortunately, as the race began cloud cover arrived making conditions more comfortable. Close to 600 runners participated in this very scenic Half Marathon which starts out with great seascape views that only get better as the race progresses. Going eastward into Marblehead, the course takes you across the causeway, to loop around small hills near miles 6 and 7 and then back again to the Swampscott shore and finish.

Shelley A McDonough claims it was a lot of fun, and she was relatively pleased with her time (1:47:20 (8:12/mi), about a minute faster than her previous best). Close on her heels was Ginny Nicknish in 1:48 (8:14). Bob Gillon was 7th overall and the 2nd master in 1:20:30 (6:09/mi). Marcello Scippa was 30th in 1:28:47 (6:47/mi). Janice Smaga was 4th master in 1:43:01 (7:52/mi). Molly Turner placed 11th in her age group in 1:44:26 (7:58/mi).

Held simultaneously was a 5K, and we had two participants. Darron McDonough (Shelly's brother) completed the course in 21:59 (7:05/mi), while Ginny Carlin placed as the 1st master in 22:56 (7:23/mi).

Other June Races:

  • Ron Trippet reports running his latest (48th?) marathon by adding a degree of difficulty in making this one a trail run. Ron finished in over 5:00 hours on the Nipmuck Trail Marathon in Ashford CT.

  • A hardy band of CRC'ers braved the flood waters to run in the USATF-NE 10k championship in Portsmouth this Saturday. Helped by the cool temperatures and an ultimately unsuccessful attempt to catch the first woman (by 15 seconds), Bruce Davie managed to lower his PR by 16 seconds to 34:37 (5:35/mile). Missy Mendel missed her PR by a second (attributable to the congested start perhaps), to finish 5th in her age-group in 37:48 (6:05). Allison Abbott ran her first race as a CRC member and although she claimed to be disappointed with her 42:31 (6:51) finish, this placed her 15th in her age-group and puts her high on the CRC women's rankings. CRC's favorite baker, Chuck Schultz, ran a time of 47:51 (7:42).

  • Jim Dezieck reports that he ran the Whirlaway Classic in Methuen on in a time of 49:47. It was nicely organized by the Whirlaway Sports Center and nicely hosted by the owner. Nearly along the Merrimac River but half of it was up and down mild hills. Lots of raffle stuff from the Sports Center.

  • CRC was well represented at this version of the Fresh Pond races that are held every Saturday, rain or shine. Under warm, slightly humid conditions, a mixture of old-timers and new members ran the 2.5 mile and 5 mile races. In the shorter race, Peter Gallimore took third place in a time of 12:52 (5:09/mile) and Bruce Davie was just behind him in 12:57 (5:11/mile). Siana LaForest ran her first race as a CRC member, clocking 18:09 (7:15). She was, however, unlucky not to break 18 minutes, as a crowd of CRC spectators impersonating the finish line caused her to stop 50 yards short of the real finish.

It was a CRC sweep in the 5 mile, with Chris Leitz winning in 28:22 (5:40) while Missy Mendel was first woman in 30:11 (6:02). Bob Gillon was second male in 28:25 (5:41), and Marcello Scippa took 5th place in 28:59 (5:48). Kerry Kirkendall interrupted her marathon training and whirlwind social calendar to run 33:40 (6:44). Molly Turner broke 35 minutes for the first time, clocking 34.50 (6:58). Completing the large CRC contingent was Lori Marcotte, running the 5 miles in approximately 40 minutes.

A select subset of the CRC team replaced the missing fluids and calories with a stunning post-race brunch at Pentimento in Belmont Center.

  • Ray Gonzales took a break from work and ran the Breaktime 5K series in Boston during lunch, coming in 16th in 20:38 (6:38/mi). Reports are he was not missed by his boss...

  • Peter Gallimore and Missy Mendel returned to Marion on Saturday, hoping to repeat their 1997 winning performances in the 2nd Annual Marion Village 5K. On a hot & sunny, and now certified course, they each successfully repeated their wins and accumulated PR's as well. Peter had company for the entire race but used a strong finishing kick in the last 200 meters to win in 15:56 (5:09/mile), putting 8 seconds between himself and the second place finisher. He is now the course record holder. Missy ran steady and finished in 17:44 (5:43/mile), and 15th overall. The Marion race course is flat and very scenic but lacked mile markers. After about 1 > miles the course turns to run along the water and finishes at the Tabor Academy on the marina.
