March 1997

Stu's 30-K (Boylston)
March 9 ,1997

Good and bad news from Stu's on a beautiful March day. First, the good news: Marcello Scippa and Kerry Kirkendall each had excellent races. Marcello came in 146th out of nearly 1000 finishers, averaging 6:42/mile pace and completing this rugged, hilly 30K course in 2:04:32. Kerry was a strong 2:18:57 (7:28), finishing 351st, and as the 33rd woman. The bad news was Scott Duhaime came up lame at mile 7 and had to hitch a ride with one of Boylston's finest to the Clinton Town Line, then jumped in the back of a snowy pick-up truck for the final frostbitten, five mile journey to the Middle School, where the race started and finished. Editor's Note: we don't think it's the first time Scott's been given a ride in a police car, but we think it's the first time he's ridden in the front seat...

Other March Results

March 2

  • Todd Tamura and Missy Mendel were in Connecticut this weekend to test their luck in the casinos and on the roads. They visited Foxwoods on Saturday, where Todd played some poker, and both ran in the Kelley's Pace 5K Road Race on Sunday. Todd gambled and raced skillfully, coming out ahead in the poker game and finishing the 5K race course in 20:27. Missy finished in 19:21 (3rd woman, first in the open division) in her first race since her marathon PR, a long recovery and injury, and was pleased with her time. She is hoping this race was the first in a good road racing season for '97. Todd is reportedly on his way back to Foxwoods soon for more poker!

  • Michael Albert ran a PR at a 5-K race. Okay, he had never run that distance before, but it still qualifies for a PR, dammit! In Malden, they had St. Patrick's Day early, and ran a race in his honor, sponsored by My Honey Fitz Pub. His time of 18:39 didn't break the 6 minute barrier (6:01), but he was ecstatic with his 22nd place finish. New member Amy Otsu finished 66th, 4th in her category with a clocking of 22:02 (7:06).
March 16 (Race of the Month Day)
  • A day of half marathons. At least four CRC members ran the inaugural race in Melrose, the Massachusetts Law Enforcement Half Marathon. A pitched battle for top club honors was waged, and bragging rights fall to Jim Reardon, who finished tenth overall, and beat Marcello Scippa by a scant 49 second. Marcello was 12th. Jim completed the course in 1:18:05 (5:58), while Marcello was just over 6 minutes a mile (6:02, to be exact) at 1:18:54. Of course, we won't mention that Marcello ran Stu's a week ago...Also competing were Dave Quilty, in a Boston tuneup, who finished in 1:39:06 (7:34, 166th overall), and Derek Mess, Clydesdale extraordinare, who ran the hilly terrain in 1:24:43 (6:28), coming in 42nd overall.

  • Down in New Bedford, five CRC runners braved the wind and near freezing conditions, including Bruce Davie, Al Nagel, Kerry Kirkendall, Brian Barringer and Amy Otsu. No one seemed to enjoy the wind very much, especially as it was a headwind for most of the last four miles, to complement the challenge of that last hill in mile 13. In Bruce's first attempt at the half marathon distance, he was very pleased to finish 41st in 1:20:05. Brian finished in 1:29:37 (6:50) in 174th place. Kerry capped her Stu's performance with a 1:35:12 (7:16), as the 35th women and 6th in her age bracket, while Amy Otsu finished in 1:53:10 (8:38) at 1038. There was another injury to a CRC runner, however: Al Nagel reports that it was:

definitely not the best day weather-wise to race a half (particularly after two warm sunny weeks in Florida). Most of the first three miles we were running into a strong headwind; then, after "the hill", I started to get into a nice groove. Unfortunately, around mile six I started to experience extreme pain in my left foot and quickly realized that something was seriously wrong. So I dropped out at the halfway point. The end result, after seeing my doctor yesterday, is a stress fracture of the second metatarsal; 4-6 weeks of recovery and no running. After more than two years of being injury-free , I guess my number just came up on Sunday. Or maybe President Clinton just reached out his big paw for some company in the 50's plus recovery tent.

March 29
  • Bruce Davie had a great day at Fresh Pond in near ideal conditions. His time of 27:38 (5:32) was a PR for 5 miles and his best on this course by over a minute, but was good for only 7th place, so no name in the paper for him this weekend!
