Bambino's 5K
May Race of the Month
Held May 18th 1996 in Waltham

A small, but spirited turnout for the CRC in Waltham, on a perfect day to race; 60 degrees and overcast, with a slight breeze. It turned out to be quite a day for two of the three, as both CRC newcomer Bruce Davie and Scott Duhaime set personal bests for the 5K distance. Bruce scooted in under the 17 minute barrier, while Scott broke 19 minutes, firsts for both men. Up against a very strong Seniors field, Al Nagel held his own while still taking it "easy" on his road to recovery from the Marathon. We are looking for a larger CRC turnout at the June Race of the Month! (venue still under consideration)

Other May Races:

May 4th
  • Jim Reardon placed fourth overall at the MIT Community Service Fund 4-miler with a time of 22:32, a pace of 5:38 per mile. Jim's now off to Switzerland for a few weeks of skiing, hiking and high altitude training.
  • The Breakheart Classic 6K takes runners over a beautiful, wooded course through Breakheart Reservation of Wakefield which climbs approximately 300 feet in the first mile and a half. Three CRC runners attempted to "pound the hills flat" over this challenging terrain. Bob Gillon tested his spring legs and took the third Master's spot and twelfth overall on his "home course" in 20:56 (5:38). Scott Duhaime placed 31st overall in 23:51 (6:25), beating his previous best on the course by 33 seconds. Linda Gillon finished 150th, in 31:44 (8:32).
May 5th
  • Al Nagel started his comeback from the Marathon by running in the Hyde Park 5 Miler. Al took third in the Senior's category with a time of 33:03 (6:37), bagging a huge trophy in the process. He finished 30th overall.
May 11th
  • Clydesdale runner Derek Mess entered the Annual Foothealth 5K Road Race in Derry, NH. His 5:48 pace carried him to the finish line in 18:02, finishing 2nd in the aforementioned category, and 20th overall.
  • Marcello Scippa took 5th overall in a 5 mile race in Harvard, MA, finishing in 30:04 (6:01), his first race after Boston
  • New member Bruce Davie grabbed a seventh place finish in the weekly Fresh Pond series. He proved that he belongs with the "A" group by completing the five mile course in 29:53. Bruce comes to us via the swamps of Jersey - welcome!
  • Bill Cohn ran the Mt. Kearsarge Hill Climb. Here's his race story:

On Saturday May 11th I went up to Warner, NH to run the second annual Mt. Kearsarge Hill Climb (8.5 miles). Never having run a mountain race like this I thought, "at worst I'll average 8 minutes/mile". Wrong! After the first 5 miles, which, by most standards, would be considered seriously hilly, we entered the state park where it got so steep that "power walking" was the mode of choice. 3.5 miles later, I reached the top (2950'), which was shrouded in rain clouds. My total time of 1:18:09 was good for 50th out of 115. Crazy as it may sound, I'm planning to do another hill climb race (the Temple Mountain 10-miler) in three weeks. Wanna join me?

May 18th
  • Bambino's 5K
  • Back to his normal Saturday morning routine, Marcello Scippa placed 2nd in the Fresh Pond 5 Mile series, finishing in 28:38 (5:44).
May 19th
  • New member Brian Barringer finished 15th overall, and 4th in his category in the first rendition of the Travis Roy Road Race, completing this 5 miler held for the paralized Boston University hockey player in 30 minutes flat (6:00). Never satisfied to run one race a weekend, Al Nagel also competed in this race. Al took the 5th Seniors slot and 81st overall, with a time of 33:38 (6:44) Al needs to read Jeff Galloway's column in the June edition of Runner's World!
  • A Gillon's weekend is never complete without at least one race! Reading, MA was the place, and 5 miles was the distance, as Bob took 2nd overall and the first Master's spot in 28:10 (5:40), while wife Linda completed the course in 41:18 (8:16), finishing as the 3rd Master's Female!
  • Maintaining that the race was "3.4 miles, not a 5K; you know State Police don't measure mileage well", Ginny Carlin nonetheless ran the Westport, MA Blue Heron Classic in 23:16 (6:45). She overcame a cold (propagated no doubt by "overtraining," says Fred), Ginny was the third woman to cross the line and the first female Masters. Like Charbo's Run in Milton, this race was also for the benefit of a fallen comrade, and ran parallel to Horseneck Beach, "A beautiful area," followed by "a great barbecue." Ginny got roasted at track by Fred when Keith tattled on her, because she "was absolutely not supposed to run a race yet!"
  • Entering a 5K in Needham was Derek Mess, who finished in 18:07 (5:51) but did not write down his place of finish. Come now Derek, the Webmaster wants to know all!
May 22nd
  • Two CRC runners decided to take advantage of the track series playing out in their backyard during practice this week. Pete O'Shea and Jim Reardon tested their mettle against Olympic hopeful Kathy Franey in the 3000 meter challenge, and must have scared her off as she quit after a 4:40 mile. Peter came in third in 9:45 (5:15), while Jim took fourth just ten seconds later in 9:55 (5:20) as fellow CRC members cheered them on. Way to go guys!
May 26th
  • Ronnie Trippett ran the Vermont City Marathon on a perfect, spring like day. Ronnie completed his third marathon this year in 3:26:33, a pace of 7:53/mile, about his average. Ronnie came in 387th overall, and was the 16th senior male over the scenic, Burlington, VT course. If you're looking for a nice marathon where your friends can watch you at five different spots along the course, this is it (just watch for the killer hill at 16.5!)
  • Melissa Mendel ran the 3rd Annual Miles for Smiles 5K in Wakefield, RI for the 2nd straight year. Melissa completed the course in 19:38 (6:19), the same time she did it in last year, good for 5th female, and first in her age group.
May 27th
  • Al Nagel placed 2nd in the male 50 to 59 age group and came in 24th overall at the Rowley 5K Road Race on Memorial Day with a time of 19:49 (6:24).
