Other May Races

May 3: Fresh Pond Saturday Race (Cambridge) --- 2.5 miles
Marcello Scippa continues to race and excel at every distance from under 5-K to the marathon. Today he was ready for a quick sprint around the pond finishing 3rd overall in 13:50 (5:32).
May 3: MIT Road Race (Cambridge) --- 4 miles
The speedsters were out in full force this morning! Jim Reardon placed 2nd overall in a time of 21:38 (5:24 pace) while Bruce Davie wasn't far behind in 4th place with a time of 21:57 (5:29). Not to be outdone, Melissa Mendel finished as the second female and 9th overall in 24:44 (6:11). Both Melissa and Bruce felt that the course was long (the Webmaster feels the same about every race he runs).
May 3: Wakefield Rotary Race (Wakefield) --- 6-K
This race is an annual rite of Spring for the Gillons. As usual, Bob finished way up there (7th overall, 1st master) in 20:44 (5:34) while Linda ran a great race in 32:00 (8:36) finishing 159th overall and as 6th master. Keep it up, Linda! Scott Duhaime (who is still operating in early marathon recovery mode) ran 29:35 (7:57), finished 109th overall, and provided the following details of his unique race experience:

"This was the first race in which I pushed my daughter in a jogging stroller. This race is very difficult, consisting of four very steep hills in the first half of the race. There was another runner pushing her baby, and we let them get out of sight in the first mile, as Catherine and I hit the marker in 9:15. She started to get fussy, and began rolling around in the stroller, causing me to lose balance several times so I picked up the pace. Mile 2 was completed in 8:10. She really started to scream and kick, becoming non wind resistant, so we ran faster, trying to get her back to her mother. The 3rd mile was 7:05. We passed the other baby jogger like they were standing still and crossed the finish line in a sprint with Catherine screaming her head off -- I think the last .72 miles were done at 6:20 pace!"
May 10: Hospital Week Road Race (York, ME) --- 5-K
Chuck Schultz reports: "Just want to write you that we went up to ME for a race in York last Saturday. A very pretty course that is on and off roads as well as over a footbridge that is a lot of fun. I did a 20:48 for the five K which is okay for this time of year for me." Good job, Chuck!
May 10: Foot Health Road Race (Derry, NH) --- 5-K
Derek Mess followed Chuck only as far as New Hampshire where he had sniffed out another 5-K with a Clydesdale Division. This time Derek ran a 17:50 (5:45 pace) to win the aforementioned division once again in very impressive fashion.
May 11: Covered Bridges Half Marathon (Woodstock, VT) --- 13.1 Miles
Melissa Mendel and Bruce Davie ventured up north for Mothers Day and both returned with PR's on a course that Bruce described as "beautiful" (he obviously wasn't spending a lot of time looking at the scenery). Melissa (1:24:16 -- a 6:26 pace) finished as 2nd female, first in her age group, and 64th overall (out of 1652 runners). Bruce (1:18:32 -- a 6:00 pace) finished 17th overall and 8th in his age group. Wow!!!
May 11: Scituate Firefighters Race (Scituate) --- 5-K
Ginny Carlin continued her steady recovery from last year's injuries with a second place finish in the Masters Division. On a course widely reported to be 3.2 miles +/-, she ran 23:21, a 7:32 pace. She's on her way back, folks!
May 17: Breakheart Classic (Saugus) --- 5-K/2.5 Miles
Bob Gillon continues to amaze, winning this race by almost a minute. He ran a 5:31 pace to finish in 13:38 and provided the following explanation:

"I won the race in a most impressive 13:38 and won a trophy the size of a small child. Actually the race was supposed to be a 5-K but they directed us in the wrong direction and the course ended up about 2.5 miles in case you couldn't figure it out."
 May 17: Battle Road Run (Concord-Lincoln) --- 10-K
Brian Barringer showed that he has successfully recovered from the Boston Marathon, running a 37:05 (5:59 pace) to finish 10th overall and 5th in his age group. Al Nagel, continuing to recover from his late-winter stress fracture, also did the race as a training run at a considerably slower pace.
May 18: Reading Rotary Road Race (Reading) --- 5-Miles
    Bob Gillon reports:

"I finished 4th overall and 2nd in my age group in a time of 27:55. Not my best on this course but 15 seconds faster than last year. Linda finished 4th in her age group in a time of 43:08"
May 21: MIT Track Meet (Cambridge)
    Bruce Davie reports:

"Marcello and I ran in the 3000m at the MIT track meet last night. After freezing our butts waiting for the last heat of the under 11 boys 400m to finish at around 8:30, the race finally got underway under a rising moon and with a characteristic headwind up the home straight. I finished in second place in a time of 9:32, while Marcello did a 9:55. A handful of CRC faithful stayed around to watch and their cheering greatly helped, although it did perhaps alert the winner to my approach in the final lap."

    Melissa's version provides further details:

"Bruce and Marcello ran the 3k in the MIT mini meet last night, and some of us CRC'ers stuck around after practice to cheer them on. Bruce ran beautifully, placing second in 9:33, and made up tremendous ground on the first place guy in the last 2 laps. We thought Bruce was going to win, but our loud cheering in the final lag tipped the first place guy to speed up in the final 50 meters. Bruce finished only seconds behind him. I don't know where Marcello placed, I think 5th? And he ran 9:50-something, I'm sorry I didn't get his time. Marcello also ran the mile in last week's MIT mini-meet, he ran it in 4:59, don't know where he placed, I think 5th."
May 24: Northeastern Twilight Track Meet (Dedham)
    Jim Reardon reports:

"I ran 9:19.77 for the 3000 at the Northeastern Twilight Meet #2 in Dedham on 24 May. What a great track! It's the softest track I've ever run on. And what a great place for a track: the track and adjacent fields are surrounded by trees, and there are plenty of forest paths to warmup on. It's amazing that a haven like this can be found inside route 128. Thanks to Marcello for tipping me off about the twilight meet series (he finished in 9:46.97, which means we both set PR's)."
May 26: Vermont City Marathon/Marathon Relay (Burlington, VT) --- 26.21 Miles
    Bob Gillon reports:

"The CRC relay teams did quite well at the Burlington Relay this weekend. Our Open Mixed A team (Peter Gallimore, Bob Gillon, Bruce Davie, Missy Mendel, and Ranjeet Sudan) finished 6th overall and captured 1st in its division finishing in 2:32:41. The Open Mixed B team (Sue Dahl, Kerry Kirkendall, Bill Cohn, Amy Otsu, and Mike Albert) finished in 3:03:22 and finished 24th in their division while the Mixed Masters team (Ron Trippett, Ginny Carlin, Chuck Shultz, Linda Gillon, and Bob Gillon) finished close behind in 3:11:08 to finish 7th in their division.

    Quite impressive finishes for all.

Ewa ran 4:35:57 for her 1st marathon. Her goal was 4:30 so she did remarkably well. Although she was not enjoying the last 4 miles, she was thrilled to have completed the marathon.

The accomodations where we stayed were excellent. Missy did a fantastic job of making all the arrangements. We returned back to the Residence Inn after the marathon as there was a hot tub and pool and an area with a grill and outdoor deck where we held the picnic and were able to relax. I'm sure everyone had a great time."

    CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE WHO RAN!!
    (AND PARTICULARLY EWA)

May 26: Arlington Memorial Day Road Race (Arlington) --- 5-K/10-K
In the 10-K, Derek Mess ran this difficult course in 37:58 (a 6:08 pace), finishing 14th overall.

In the 5-K, Al Nagel ran a 21:44 (7:00 pace) to finish 30th overall. "I felt great and had fun (which is all I wanted) -- despite 1.5 miles of headwind on the Mass. Avenue climb to Arlington Heights. Hard to believe but I won the 50-59 age group. Unfortunately, the actual age group was 40-59. Whoever dreamt up that unrealistic range certainly wasn't a runner in his/her late 50's."
