Race of The Month

November 3rd, 1:30pm
Genesis Battlegreen 10K, Lexington, MA

Sunny skies, cool temperatures and 25-35 mph winds were the order of the day, as 480 Runners crossed the finish line, including 3 CRC runners. Scott Duhaime set a 10K PR and came in 33rd overall in 39:43 (6:24). The gusty winds took their toll on Bill Cohn's breathing, and he struggled in at 45:38 (7:21). Eva Golebiowska was the first "Filly" to cross in 56:40 (9:07). After the race, they all cleaned up on the incredible feast that consisted of pizza, chili, chinese noodles, bagels, juices, cookies, water, and more! Considering that only three CRC runners showed up, we'll do another race of the month!

Other November Races:

November 3rd
  • CRC had one participant in the New York Marathon: new member Michelle Boockoff bettered last year's time in the same race with a 4:30 finish. She headed off to Sweden the very next day for a business trip - hope she travelled business class, with plenty of leg room so as not to cramp up!
  • A small 5K in Lynn caught the eye of Brian Barringer and Jackie Atherley. Brian finished 5th out of 100 runners in 17:53 (5:46) while Jackie was the 3rd women and 33rd overall in 22:24 (7:14)
November 9th
  • Bruce Davie must have recovered from his Bay State Marathon experience because not only did he not pass out 200 yards from the finish, but he won the gold at the Fresh Pond 2.5 miler with a 13:50 (5:32) time.
November 10th
  • CRC Female runner extrodinaire Missy Mendel continued the assault on her personal record book by completing the Ocean State Marathon in 3:11:17! Missy averaged 7:18's and finished as the 12th woman and 141st person overall. This completes a phonemenal year for Missy, in which she PR'ed in every distance she ran...Congratulations! (Editor's note: we had previously reported that she finished as the 10th woman; Missy was actually 10th in her age bracket, 0-39; prize money was awarded only to the top ten finishers - oh well!)
  • Dear Webmaster:
You will be happy to know that CRC was well represented at the Nantucket 10K Challenge this weekend. David Quilty came in 4th masters (out of a field of 13), 19th overall (out of 93) with a 42:35 (6:52). Janice Smaga came in at 47:47 (7:42), good enough for 1st in her age group and 42nd overall. Rolling hills, great weather, nice race!

    Love, Janice
  • Al Nagel snuck away from his condo closing long enough to log a 35:29 at the Boston Atheletic Club 5 mile road race. His 7:06 pace carried him to 80th place, 7th masters.
November 17th
  • Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the Philadelphia Marathon was run on this day. Any way, New Member Lionel Kervella had a fantastic time. He writes: First Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. For me, I will take a plane to Paris go to Brittanny to see my family. Now numbers: in Philadelphia, I finished in a time of 3:06:02 and at a rank 213th of 2275 total finishers. And if you want more numbers my pace was 7:05.8 per mile and I was 51st of 298 males aged 20 to 29. Author's note: Pretty hot stuff!
  • Marcello Scippa was back on the racing circuit, Running His Turkey Off in Tewksbury. Marcello finished 49th in this 15K, in 56:55 (6:07). Molly Turner, who came a few times to track this summer finished 157th in 1:10:27 (7:35)
November 28th
  • The reason you run Turkey Trots (or any race, for that matter) is so you can eat more on Thanksgiving!!!! So, get out there and sign up for your local Thanksgiving morning race, and pig out on the bird later!
  • The 5K race around Franklin Park in Boston is one of the more unusual and unique 5K races anyone could ever run. It goes over hill and dale, under stone arches, over foot bridges, crosses fields, climbs and decends stairs, twists and turns around sharp corners, canters around ponds and goes through a ruined castle all in the middle of the city. Scott Duhaime dared race in the ice and snow, and came away with 18th place in 20:00 flat (6:27). No PR's set on this course! The race has grown to over 200 people in just it's third year.
  • Two CRC'ers ran on the south shore in the 4th annual Dream Catcher Classic 5 Miler in Weymouth. Marcello Scippa took 11th place in 28:41 (5:44), while Jeff Phillips warmed up for his gravy-laden feast in 35:17 (7:03). Unconfirmed was the fact that neither caught their dreams!
  • The 15th Annual Essex Turkey Trot was the choice for Dave Quilty, Ronnie Trippett and Janice Smaga. Janice took first in her division (F40-49) with a 37:17 (7:28), while Dave was the first CRC'er to finish in 34:25 (6:53). Ronnie took a break from climbing ladders to finish in 36:17 (7:16).
  • Our North Shore correspondent Chuck Schultz writes:
I went with my son to Newburyport to run in the woods at Maudsley State Park. I expected about 80 to 100 people for the 5k. Much to our surprize there was 300 - 400 people. The word is out. I guess running with 6,000 people in North Andover is not much fun or exercise with all the walking you have to do.
It was cold and beautiful. Very quiet going through the snow covered trails in the pine grove. Nothing could be heard but heavy breathing from the asthmatics until an " O shit", as some stepped in horse droppings, rang out through the green needles. A little hilly but nice. Too many little kids ran. Damn buggers were pretty fast. Did a 23.13 (7:29)...Okay since I had not run in a month. The new orthotic is working out well. Ya, I did beat my son by 15 seconds. He'll get me if he wants to train. Youth will be served.
  • Now from our fast contingent: Bob Gillon came in 87th out of 14,000 at the Manchester, Connecticut 5 mile Thanksgiving Day Race with a time of 26:29 (5:34). He was the 12th master's male finisher, and says "Lots of entertainment along the way." I don't know; you'll have to ask him!
  • Sometimes member Ann Tassinari was busy at the 4th Annual Unstuffathon in Beverly, finishing as the first female master in 17:38, a 7:04 pace for this 2.5 miler.
  • And last but not least, Beth Bouthout has a report. Yes, Dr. Beth?
Well I wanted to report to you my Thanksgiving Pie Run experience. It was a 5 mile race by the ocean in Newport/Middletown RI. Very scenic, but very windy. My time was 38:42 (7:44), which I was happy with (last year was better at 38:09). I'm not in as good shape as I was last year, but I'm working to get back to it!
    See you Weds
    Dr. Beth
November 30th
  • Bill Stathis is slowly returning to his previous sub-master days, and his annual pilgrimage to Holyoke gave him his fastest race pace time in several years. He completed the 10K Cross Country course at the Talking Turkey in 38:25 (6:12), finishing 38th overall out of 700.
