Race of the Month

November 27th (Thanksgiving Day) --- Boston

It was a day for "building character", not setting PR's --- 40 mph winds gusting up to 60 mph, wind chill factor of 10-20 degrees. At times it seemed as if you were running into a brick wall. Rumor has it that three runners were blown off the Harvard Bridge and still haven't surfaced.

Despite the less than favorable conditions, eight CRC'ers started off their Turkey Day by running this new race --- others, who shall remain nameless, decided to stay home and tend the turkey. Nonetheless, three of our speedsters (Peter, Lionel, and Jim) finished in the top 10.

Congratulations to everyone who ran --- and survived!!

Other November Races

November 2: New York City Marathon (New York City) --- 26.2 Miles
Five CRC'ers ventured to the Big Apple on Sunday to battle the five boroughs and the elements (this race always seems to have less than wonderful weather). Despite torrential downpours from time to time, all five had excellent results with Adam Penn leading the charge. Full results:

    Dana Laird
    Peter Larsen
    Adam Penn
    Shari Solomon
    Jim Woodman
    3:43:18
    4:56:43
    3:08:41
    4:09:25
    3:39:09

    Some comments from Jim Woodman:

"New York was awesome, as you said it would be.  We all had an incredible experience despite or maybe because of the miserable weather.  When I got into Central Park it was absolutely torrential.  I've never seen it rain that hard before.  There was about five inches of water on the ground.  This all kind of added to the thrill and the fans were even more supportive because of the conditions, even if there were less of them.
Shari, Adam and my friend George and I met up before the race.  George and I ran together and Shari and Adam went at their own paces.  Shari came in at 4:09 which is awesome for her first race.  Adam got 3:08 which qualified him for Boston and I got 3:39 which I was pleased with under the conditions and with my earlier injuries.
I'm gonna take a couple weeks off from the track to let my achilles heal but I'll be back in December to start building up for a spring marathon. "
November 2: Rafferty's Pub Road Race (Marshfield) --- 5 Miles
    Ginny Carlin reports:

"I actually ran my best race of this pathetic season yesterday: 35:29 for 5 miles.  Still off my best times overall, but a hopeful way to end the season.  Still only took 2nd master though - some former Olympic trial contender or something had the nerve to come to my hometown race!!"

 November 2: Genesis Battle Green 10-K (Lexington) --- 10-K
    Scott Duhaime reports:

"There goes the chance for another PR department:

They changed the course this year for the 2nd Annual Genesis Fund Battlegreen 10K in Lexington, making it much tougher than last year.  It went from a flat and fast course, to a hilly and twisting race this year.  In addition, the weather was more like June than November -- near 70, breezy and humid, with off and on showers.  How many races go by your house?  Well, the race went right by Bill Cohn and Sue Dahl's country estate, and Bill and daughter Charlotte cheered on the runners and held a sign for Mom.  Sue ran her first race in a long time (not including Winnepesaukee), and attacked the hills with an even pace, finishing in 53 minutes flat (8:32 - 184th overall).  Scott Duhaime went out too fast, and slogged through the puddles fighting a cold in 40:50 (6:35 - 35th).  Still, this race has perhaps the best post-race food spread, including minestrone soup, Chinese noodles, bagels, pizza, fruit, and more, all held inside the Lexington HS Field House.  You can't beat that!"

November 12: Breaktime Trail Run (Andover) --- 5-K
    Scott Duhaime reports:

"Skipped practice this week to run a race at lunch, the first annual Breaktime Trail Run, hosted by Dave Camire of Coolrunning fame.  Bribed, err...talked three other co-workers into playing hooky to do it, as it was held at 12:15.  Imagine a small crowd sprinting out of a parking lot and fighting for position on a narrow, twisting trail full of roots and trees within the first 10 yards...my co-workers may never talk to me again!  When you're battling a cold and you try to run a 5K, especially a train 5K, you can go anaerobic quickly.  Me, I was gassed after nine minutes of running, and faded over the last half.  Allowed to guys to pass me in the last mile and finished 12th in 21:03 (6:47).  Those who have never experienced a trail race should try one in '98, but don't expect to compete at your road race pace.  The essence of life becomes clearer as your legs turn to jello, your lungs burn, and you roll your ankle over rough terrain.  And that's if you don't get lost..."

November 15: Fresh Pond Races (Cambridge) --- 2.5 Miles
Peter Gallimore took Bruce's recent submission to heart and showed up on Saturday for a post-snowstorm workout. "I did the two and a half mile race in a time of 13:48. The path around the pond was cleared. It was not as bad as I thought it would be." Displaying his usual modesty, Peter neglected to mention that he also won the race.

November 16: South Shore YMCA 5-Miler (Quincy) --- 5 Miles
On a cold and windy November morning, Ginny Carlin and Al Nagel represented CRC at this popular local race. They battled headwinds for the first two miles and then got a tailwind along Wollaston Beach "until we had to turn back into the wind again". Ginny ran 36:07 (7:13 pace) to finish 66th overall and 2nd in the F40-49 category. Al ran 33:36 (6:43 pace) to finish 34th overall and 4th in the M50-59 category ("3rd through 5th finished within 10 seconds so it was a fun race at the end. I tried to pick it up but my legs still have some marathon left in them, I think.")

 November 27: 3rd Annual Pilgrim 5-K (Hudson) --- 5-K
Scott Duhaime battled 40 mph winds and 1500 of his closest, personal friends in the 3rd annual Pilgrim 5K in Hudson, MA.  When you promise not only a glass of micro-brewed beer for all legal-aged runners at the finish, but also their own half-gallon growler of beer, you get one of the largest races in Massachusetts.  With visions of a tall, frosty by 9:30 AM dancing in his head, Scott finished 113th in 19:36 (6:19).  His pace back home was noticeably slower!
