Race of the Month
13th Annual Boston Athletic Club/Marie Petrilli Foundation 5M Run/3M Walk
at the Boston Athletic Club 653 Summer Street in South Boston, MA. Noon on Sunday November 7th, 1999
The November gales were set upon the coast Sunday assuring that PRs would be few and far between.
Apparently the thought of leaning into the wind for 5 miles deterred more then a few CRC runners
as only a sextet made the journey over the river and through the traffic to Southie and the BAC.
The fortunate few that found their way to the starting line were rewarded by a friendly crowd of
supporters, an easy route to run, and scenic views of historic Boston harbor.
Adam and George both in tapering mode for Philadelphia Marathon grabbed top 10 places in their
division. Shelly and Beth both recovering from Bay State held back just a bit from their usual
efforts. Dave managed to finish just ahead of 59 year old Dick Hoyt pushing his son in the wheel
chair. The Hoyts continue to inspire throngs of runners and non-runners alike as judged by the
cheers they receive along the way. Jeff Townsend -- is the guy who started the race 15
minutes late... it's too bad he didn't make it on time, because he likely would have challenged
for first, next time call ahead Jeff!
For after the race activities the BAC set aside their tennis pavilion. The spent runners had the
choice of Roast Pig, Clam Chowder, humus, bagels, bananas, oranges, pasta, pizza, water, juice,
both red and white wine and Harpoon Beer (the UFO was particularly tasty). This race gets ****
(this is four stars). Next year pencil this race in on your running calendar.
