The Riverway, Part III
The Rainiest Day in Boston History

Who but a runner would venture out on a day more fit for a sump pump? Although the Boston area received over 10" of rain, a few brave souls made it to a race inTopsfield, and a few raced in Medford; I went out for a long run on my favorite local course. I saw but two other runners in my eleven plus mile run/wade, promising my wife as I left the house that I wouldn't run through anything deeper than my hips. The water pouring down the hills and over the stone walls of the arborteum was amazing, as was a normally tranquil brook flowing out the South Street Gate; I was thwarted by a boiling turrent of cascading water, crossing which would have been akin to taking lethal injection. About a mile after solving that inimical puzzle, the path I was running on along the Riverway proved less harmful but no less deep; a small footbridge over a tiny stream was suddenly lost in a skin numbing, thigh deep pond about 100 feet in length. Finally, Leverett Pond in Olmstead Park had tripled in size, flooding the Riverdale Parkway, submerging paths, benches, trees and cars indescriminately. Torrents raced down Goddard Street, and Allandale Street was one huge puddle. All in all, I had tremendous fun splashing along, getting nailed by cars ignoring the No Wake Zone signs, but my running shoes won't be competely dry for another week!
