Lake Winnepesaukee Relay, September 14th

Once again CRC members streamed Northward on Rte 93 in search of a weekend filled with racing, competition, fun and natural beauty, for this was the annual Lake Winnepesaukee Relay Weekend. For the last three years, CRC has housed itself at the Oliver Compound, which graces the shores of New Hampshire's largest lake with four houses and a main lodge that occupy 5 private acres. Most arrived Friday night for the pre-race pasta dinner, and to finalize race strategy. This is no normal race! The relay circles the entire lake, consisting of eight legs that total 65.9 miles. Car pool and watering strategies are key components to a successful day, as are getting runners to assigned starting points on time!

CRC fielded four teams, with help from friends at the Parkway Running Club of West Roxbury. Mixed Open Team #1 was the first CRC team to finish, and the top three teams were closely matched, allowing for spirited competition and a fun and exciting day. Mixed Team #1 finished fourth in their division, while the Mixed Master's Team finished 2nd; each member of these teams receives a "prized" wooden loon, to be placed with honor on the mantle at home.

After team photos at the finish at Fun Spot, everyone headed back to the compound for the real festivities! Relaxing lake side on the grassy knoll, sitting in Adirondack chairs or on the open porch with a great view of the mountains, CRC members fired up the grills, opened the coolers and exchanged stories about honor, valor and near catastrophy. As the rain clouds broke, CRC members were rewarded with a beautiful sun splashed vista. When the sun set, the stars came out, the beers got colder and the stories got more outlandish; one should never believe a runner whose busy replenishing lost carbohydrates!

After dinner, Bob Gillon handed out MVP and 9th leg awards, while wife Linda offered massages to weary runners with sore muscles. As the party dwindled down to the last remaining few, vows were made to come back and do it all again in '97. From all CRC members, here's a big thanks to Herb Oliver!

Other September Races:

September 1st
  • Keeping ahead of Edouard, Scott Duhaime completed his third Triathlon of the season at the Holyoke Lions Journey for Sight Triathlon in Hampton Pond State Park. On a beautiful September morning, Scott joined 140 other atheletes in this F.I.R.M race, finishing 24th overall in a time of 1:25:54. Upon completing the "almost" 1/2 mile swim in 13:25 (75th overall), he picked the clinging grasses off his body as he ran along the beach to the bicycle rack. After a quick 1:53 transition, he peddled the 17 mile bike course in 48:07 (17th overall), which rambled and rolled through beautiful Western Massachusetts farmland along quiet country roads, averaging just under 23 mph, while picking up 18 places. He then completed the 3.5 mile run in 22:27 (6:25, 21st overall), picking up 7 more places. Scott finished his first triathlon season ever finishing 30th, 65th and 24th in three races, always in the top 20th percentile. His swim definately needs work, though!
  • Excuses, excuses! Bruce Davie flew back from California the day before, and while he took Fred's advice to avoid dehydration, he still uses either "jetlag as an excuse for not improving, or maybe the 50+ mile training week I had in California!" Either way, his 29th place finish at the Brewery Exchange 5K in Lowell in 17:18 (5:35) isn't too bad.
  • The Bruce Ellis Couples Race combines the time of a male/female team to define the order of finish, and Ronnie Trippett and Ann Tassinari took 15th place in this 5K run. Ron's time was 21:25 (6:55) and Ann's was 22:34 (7:17) in this Salisbury, MA race.
September 5th
  • 640 runners took on the footpaths of the Charles 'neath the ever present Hood Blimp (4th of July organizers, be damned!) for the 4th running of the NEBA Malloy 4 Mile Road Race. Starting and finishing behind the Lee Pool on Storrow Drive were our own Marcello Scippa and Kerry Kirkendall. Marcello was 9th overall in 23:05 (5:46), While Kerry was the 7th female and 43rd overall in 27 flat (6:45). Very impressive, considering the track practice we had the night before!
September 7th
  • The Doctor is in! Beth Bouthot competed in the Race for the Cure 5K through Boston. Beth put all her good track training together with an impressive time of 23:38 (7:37), which is a PR by ONE SECOND!!!. She came in 117th overall.
  • Fireman Frank Gribos warmed up for the Winnepesaukee Relay with the SIDS 10K Race in Hingham. Frank averaged 7:48's, finishing 76th in 48:07.
  • Kim Blair wrapped up his triathlon season in Sunapee, NH at the New England Triathlon Festival Championship, an Ironman Qualifier. He competed on the longer course, which was a 1 mile swim, 44 mile bike and 9 mile run. His overall time was 3:48:44, which was good for 132nd overall, 21st in his age group. Not an Ironman qualifying time, but an excellent overall effort.
September 8th
  • How could a weekend go by without seeing the name Marcello Scippa? Our busy little Lotus flower came in 5th overall and 3rd in his bracket in Waltham, at the Doubletree/Hi Tech 10K, finishing in 35:08 (5:40). And Al Nagel ran the 5K in 20:10 (6:30), finishing first in the Senior's Division.

September 21st
  • Marcello Scippa ran his fastest Fresh Pond five miler (or any other five mile race, for that matter) of the year in 27:50 (5:33). Marcello took 2nd, firmly holding on to his title of Boston Sunday Globe "Agate Man."
  • Up in Wakefield, Bob Gillon took 4th place while wife Linda placed 138th at the YMCA 4 Mile Classic. Bob ran 5:36's to finish in 22:23 and as the first Master, while Linda completed the course in 32:57 (8:14).
September 22nd
  • Chuck Schultz and Ron Trippett went over to Gov. Drummer in Byfield with Ann Tassinari for the 5K race over HILLS and dales (mostly hills). Chuck reports that "The Hill was a MAMA. We saw race horses from Lowell and other clubs which gave us the idea of running the first race of the day with the kids under 16. The embarassment would have been monumental as these kids did a mile and a half in 10:15 as a pack. We opted for the old man race for masters and beyond. Nice course around atheletic fields which lead into the woods and them thar hills. I did 22:04 and Ron did 23:5999999999."
  • The Josh Billings Runaground Triathlon in Stockbridge, MA is one of the more unusual tri's around. It includes a 24.3 mile bike, a 5+ mile CANOE and a 10K. Our CRC team of Todd Tamura & Missy Mendel grabbed a couple of the closest canoeists they could find for their 2nd shot at this event, and entered with the team name of Sidesaddle Road Victims. Todd's bike split of 1:10:33 was a little off of last year's blistering 28 mph pace, and the canoe team did their part in 1:06:08, leaving it up to Missy to pull in a 10K time of 40:08. Overall, they came in 184th, and had tremendous fun.
  • A series of races held in Somerville called the Highlander Mile was the site of some real fun. Our top Clydesdale runner Derek Mess came in first in the 2nd race of the day with a blistering time of 5:02, which was tied for 12th best of the day.
