Race of the Month

Lake Winnipesaukee Relay
Saturday, September 20th

An exciting race and a great weekend!! Despite warm and humid conditions, CRC teams set a new standard that will be very difficult to match in future years: 2 first place finishes, 2 teams in the top 30, 2 teams under 7:11, and great performances by everyone who ran. Special credit goes to the Men's Open #2 team which took the brunt of some last minute defections and had to scramble just to get a team in place. In the Mixed Masters competition, our team led from the starting gun with Janice Smaga holding off a late surge by the Marshfield Road Runners. In the Mixed Open competition, Peter Gallimore passed the Back Bay Road Runners team on the hills of Leg 8 and roared to a victory margin of five minutes. In addition, CRC provided some comic relief for runners at Morgan Farm with Ranjeet Sudan's swan dive finish and the Ken Johnson - Al Nagel two-minute baton exchange.

Special thanks to Bob and Linda for all their work in organizing the food and accomodations, to Steve for a wonderful race video (an annual event, we hope), to the team captains, to all the support teams, to Steve and Lionel for doing double duty, to Elizabeth Mullen who came off of injured reserve to run a great leg #4 (her first race), and to everyone who contributed in their own special way to making this another memorable Winnipesaukee weekend. Next year we're shooting for 5 teams!

Other September Races

Sept 7: High Tech Classic (Waltham) --- 10-K and 5-K
A sizable contingent of CRC'ers showed up for this popular early autumn race. And, as usual, CRC had a lot of impressive performances, including: 1) two first place finishers (Melissa Mendel -- 1st female in the 10-K -- and Peter Gallimore -- 1st overall in the 5-K), 2) four finishers (Marcello, Bruce, Ranjeet, and Brian) in the top 12 in the 10-K, and 3) very solid performances by Molly Turner and Steve Barney who have just returned to the track after a lengthy layoff (WATCH OUT, FOLKS!!). Congratulations to everyone who ran.

Sept 14: Rock 'n Hop Triathlon (Hopkinton) --- Triathlon
    From Scott Duhaime:

"Hey, you missed a fine race Sunday. This event was called Rock 'n' Hop Triathlon in Hopkinton State Forest, and it was aptly named. Though not a factor in the men's race, I was right in the middle of the women's bike and run leg (though to be honest, they started 5 minutes behind me in the swim), finishing between the first and second women. The swim was .75K, the bike a 10K mountain bike, and the run was a 5K, over some x-country, but mostly roads.

My swim time was good (watch those rocks on your dental work), though a bit of a struggle in 14:59 (53rd overall), as I went out too hard and couldn't get my breath back. A long transition run to the bike rack (OUCH...rocks on the bare feet), then into a highly technical, narrow single track mountain bike leg (rocks), consisting of two loops (and lots of rocks), completed in 45:54 (18th). People who were being passed were nice enough to pull over (I said ON YOUR LEFT, DAMMIT!). Some technical problems arose when I smashed my under carriage into a ROCK and bent the sprockets on the second chain ring; from then on, I had to leave it on the small ring the rest of the race, which was okay because of the difficult nature of the course (did I say rocks?). Then into a 5K run across the (DAMN!) with a long uphill (no rocks), though the run was probably closer to 2.8 miles, because my time was 17:58 (4th). I finished 17th overall (out of 87, rocking good time!), in 1:18:51, and 5th in my age group, out of medal contention again, and in need of a bike repair! Rock on!"

Sept 14: Community Run for CRI (Brookline) --- 5-K
Two CRC'ers showed up for this first year race (pretty well organized for a first-timer but unfortunately there were no mile markers or splits). Peter Gallimore added to his impressive victory list with another first place trophy, running 16:22 (a 5:17 pace). Al Nagel rabbited for Peter for the first mile (and if you believe that...........), then settled back to run 20:23 (a 6:33 pace) good for 15th overall and 3rd M50-59.
