I know it's getting cold, but there are still races left to run.... The December race of the month is just around the corner. We will be doing the Santa Scamper 5k in West Roxbury. The race takes place on December 17th, starting at Noon (so those of you with holiday parties the night before can still make it -- just go easy on the eggnog!) Additional race info and an application can be found at: http://www.parkwayrunning.org

As the CRC moves forward into the real "New Millenium" we are becoming more sophisticated with our Web site. The CRC Website is the most important marketing tool that we possess. Along with the "Members Only" section, we provide a great deal of useful information that is intended to be available for current members. We have devised a plan whereby your annual renewal date will be linked to a specific login/password for that specific anniversary month and change every twelve months, (e.g Jan 2001 anniversary will be login jan2001, password jan2001; Jan 2002 will be login jan2002, password jan2002: Feb 2001 anniversary will be login feb2001, password feb2001; feb 2002 will be login feb2002, password feb2002, etc., etc,).

Over the next week I will be sending out emails to all current members advising you of your current anniversary date and providing you with your login and password. The current login/password will be disabled effective Nov. 1st. If you do not receive a new login/password by Nov 1st. its means I either do not have a current address for you or you are not current with your dues and you will need to contact me directly.

We will also be adding a field in the "Members Directory" that will indicate your anniversary month.

We are well into the indoor season (one week). For those of you who attended last Wednesday , there were 45 of you, it was a successful night and although it seemed a little crowded at times, it was quite manageable. In the next few sessions we will be able to work the logistics of starting and stopping the intervals. Don't be shy on the track, just be careful.

The MIT schedule calls for the track to be available every Wednesday except for Dec 20th. We will announce an alternative workout for that night.

Part of the MIT indoor program has a caveat attached that requires the attending clubs to provide some services to MIT in exchange for the track usage. They have indicated that failure to provide this assistance could jeopardize track usage next year.

MIT has asked each club to provide 10 volunteers to help work at a collegiate indoor track meet this winter. All the meets are held on Saturday. The assignment will be assisting with hurdle set-up, pole vault and high jump area assistance, etc. The schedule is:

  • Saturday, Dec. 16 M & W Track Alumni Meet 1:00 PM
  • Saturday, Jan. 13 M Track Beaver Relays 10:00 AM
  • Saturday, Jan. 20 W Track vs Coast Guard & Bates 12:00 PM
  • Saturday, Jan. 27 M Track Quad Meet 1:00 PM
  • Saturday, Feb. 10 M & W Invitational 12:00 PM

If we act quickly we can probably get our pick of the date we want. As an incentive to get the required number of volunteers the Club is offering a $20 rebate on your indoor fee. If you want to participate and the date is not an issue, please respond ASAP. I will take the first 10 volunteers. If you want to participate and can only make certain dates, indicate the dates and that will be used to determine which meet we will ask for. (Note the meets are either Men Only, Women Only or Both).

Thanks for you help.

Special Thanks to the Amazing Jimmy Fund Volunteers!!

We had an incredible turn-out again this year...

Thank you so much to the valiant volunteers who braved the humid temperatures turning to intense wind and cloud cover....

To Beth, the sign holder, and Karen Claire, the bouncer, who did not know she had that within herself....and those other unsung heroes who folded, shepherded and cheered (and ate pizza!)

Thanks to you all!!

See you next year! (well, hopefully I will see you sooner, at the track...)!

This years Jimmy Fund Walk was on Sunday September 24th. Essentially this is a fund raiser for the Jimmy Fund with walkers receiving $ from their sponsors for each mile walked along the BAA Boston Marathon route.

For CRC we receive from the BAA a certain number of waivers for entrance to the BAA Boston Marathon in April. This allows many of our runners who haven't qualified for that event to participate in a world class marathon. This is clearly a great benefit to CRC members.

Note:

For more info see the BAA site at

Please respond to Caryn Gordon

Tufts 10k Volunteers

One of the fund raising activites for the CRC is the Tufts 10K. In past years this event has always been held on the Monday holiday for Columbus Day and as such has always been difficult for the CRC to get many volunteers.

This year, due to Yom Kippor on the Monday October 9th, the Tufts 10K will be held on Sunday the 8th. This is only the second time that I can recall, that the event has been held on a Sunday. This provides the CRC with a great opportunity to bring together a large group of volunteers to assist in this event. For our women members who plan on running the event, it is the National 10K Road Race Championship which means there will be some great individual runners there. For those who are not running it is a great event to watch and be part of.

Please let me know ASAP if you can help out at this event so I can get back to the race director. Last year our assignment was working at the registration / number pick-up area before the race. The club will receive $20/volunteer and there is no limit on the number of volunteers that we can sign-up.

CRC Banner

CRC Banner

CRC banner has been created to help differentiate our club. New or potential members will now be able locate CRC on workout nights. Believe it or not we have lost perspective members to other clubs because they wandered into another clubs workout thinking that it was CRC. Also at such off-site events like Winnepesauke or Burlington the banner will help the CRC members locate each other. On the negative side any over zealous behavior on our part will be correctly attributed to our members! Look for the banner at our next workout.

Join your CRC teamates this and every SUNDAY, for the Sunday group run!

Come Join the Sunday Run

When: Sunday morning at 8:30 (yes that's am)
Where: Carberry's in Central Sq. (It's on Prospect street. From Mass ave,
walk down Prospect and cross Bishop Allen. Carberry's will be a few buildings up on your right. If you get to Bread and Circus you've gone to far).

The path varies so here's a sample route from a recent Long Run:
(OK, I confess, on this one all distances are approximate)

1. Take Magazine street to the river, go left to BU bridge, go over the bridge.
2. Make a right onto Commonwealth Ave, and stay on it until you get to Chestnut Hill Resevoir (Bear left at Brighton Ave, you will pass Washington and Chestnut Hill Ave). This will be about 3 1/2 miles, so to run 7 miles turn back here.

For 8.6 miles (basically, this just adds Chestnut Hill Resevoir)
3. Make a left and run to Cleveland Circle. From there, run around the resevoir and wind through the paracourse.
4. Exit the resevoir at Cleveland Circle. Run along Beacon Street until you get to Mountfort Park. Make a left, run over the BU bridge and back to food.

For 11.5 miles (basically, this leads you from Chestnut Hill Resevoir to Brookline Resevoir and then back along Beacon) 4. After you exit the resevoir, decend the brief hill to Beacon Street and turn left to reach Cleveland Circle.
5. Turn right onto Chestnut Hill Ave. Proceed over the hill.
6. Cross Route 9, turn left, go to Brookline Resivoir (the bank)
7. Loop around Brookline Resivoir, and recross route 9.
8. Follow route 9 a block east and turn left onto Fisher Ave.
9. Run over the hill and turn left onto Clinton Rd.
10. Make a right onto Chestnut Hill Ave and run to Cleveland Circle.
11. Run along Beacon Street to Mountfort Park. Make a left, run over the BU bridge, and back to food.

Jamaica Pond attacks leave its joggers jittery

This story originally appeared in the
Boston Herald in an article by Jose Martinez on Friday, October 27, 2000

Christine Hazzard fell in love with the tree-lined serenity of Jamaica Pond when she moved here three years ago and yesterday she did not let news of two recent attacks on women at the park deter her from her daily stroll. ``This place is an oasis,'' Hazzard, 27, said. ``What happened is scary, but when you live in a major metropolitan area, things like this happen. It could happen anywhere.''

A woman strolls at Jamaica Pond yesterday as police reported another woman was beaten and fondled there Wednesday. According to Boston police, a 28-year-old woman out for a morning jog Wednesday was tackled by a man as she passed the boathouse on Jamaica Pond. The man - described as heavy-set, black and wearing black pants and leather coat - punched her several times and fondled her before fleeing. Two weeks earlier, a 33-year-old woman reported being grabbed from behind by a man who held a plastic-handled sharp object to her throat. She escaped unharmed and the man - described only as a Hispanic male in a beige baseball cap and black leather jacket - ran off toward the Open Door Theatre.

Police, who have made no arrests in either case, have increased patrols around the popular park of woods, running paths and a 68-acre kettle hole pond left behind by the Ice Age's retreating glaciers. Mayor Thomas M. Menino announced multiple steps last night including trimming brush that would make good hiding spots for assailants and increased patrols by park rangers. Park rangers will also distribute more than 500 free whistles at the Jamaica Pond Boathouse. Broken lights are being fixed and a lighting survey has been ordered by the Menino administration. Still, female joggers were shaken by the attacks.

``It's disconcerting to hear about what happened,'' said one woman, who gave only Nancy as her name, as she took a walk around the 1 1/2-mile pond loop. ``We're all out here trying to keep healthy. It's scary - people being overpowered against their will.'' Park officials said they were keenly aware of the recent attacks but stressed the incidents were isolated occurrences. ``When something like this happens, everyone puts their guard up for a while. I think that is human nature,'' said Mary Hines, spokeswoman for Boston's Parks and Recreation Department.

Many of the women out running around Jamaica Pond yesterday sported headphones and ran alone - mistakes, according to Detective Lisa Holmes of the Boston Police Department's Sexual Assault Unit. ``There are four basic rules of safety - stay alert, appear confident, trust your instincts and don't use a Walkman,'' Holmes said. ``If you have on headphones, you can't hear anyone come up behind you. It may keep your mind free, but safety-wise it isn't a good idea.''

Web Master Opening

I've run out of bad puns, exposed my lack of command over the English Language, hit my limit of creativity using HTML, exhausted the use of the one CGI program I understand, and timidly stepped into the realm of a couple of Java Scripts; So I've decided to let another experience the joys as CRC Web Master.

If you know the acronym HTML does not stand for Home To Make Lunch, or understand that CGI is not a stomach disorder and is aware that Java Scripts is not the flavor de jure at Starbucks then you are over qualified to be CRC web master. We are also looking for someone who's popular culture horizon is such that Elvis Costelo is not consider a new phenom.

If this describes you and you are willing to commit several hours weekly to the CRC web site please respond to me. This could be the start of a new career, think of how it will look on your resume: 'CRC Web Master'.

Note the prospective CRC Web Master must provide their own Web Slaves.
