The Merrimack River Trail
Andover, MA

Flowing as it does through two of New England's largest and oldest mill cities, one would be hard pressed to consider the Merrimack River bucolic; yet the trail that runs along side it for seven plus miles in Andover is a great rural escape. With the quiet expanse of the Merrimack as its constant partner, the trail winds through extensive stands of hemlock and huge white pines, broad meadows filled with wild flowers, while sturdy foot bridges assist the navigation of numerous brook crossings. With several access points from River Road, one can choose loop runs involving trail and road ranging from 2.8 to 14 miles, or stay on the trail for an out-and-back run. The footing is generally good for a trail, and the hills are few, but some are very steep! The diversity of terrain, the number of different routes, the natural beauty, and proximity to work make The Merrimack River Trail my favorite course for running or mountain bike work outs, or both! Notice to Triathletes: swimming in the river is not recommended, but a few brave water skiers have been spotted!

Seasonal changes shape the personality of the trail. When it's too hot to run on the road, viridescent trees and natural "air conditioning" from the water offer summer respite, while a late afternoon sun turns the river into a shimmering ribbon of gold. The resplendent beauty of the fall is captured in full, kaleidoscopic fire. A light snowfall In November or December can absorb all sound and turn the trail into a tranquil beach of fine white sand. Spring is a mudder's delight, and early April finds hundreds of like minded individuals competing in the 10 mile out and back Merrimack River Trail Run. In quieter times, one can see and hear many birds, including belted king fishers, flickers, wood thrushes, cormorants, great blue herons, hawks, ospreys and robins; animals can include woodchucks, rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks and field mice. On one special occasion, I saw a baby snapping turtle. Another runner told me of being chased by a large owl that ran along the ground behind him! Some day, I will not be surprised to see a deer.

Adding a trail run into a weekly workout has many benefits. It can help prevent injury by lessening the constant pounding legs get from running on pavement and concrete. Continuous changes in running stride and foot strike position strengthen muscles and ligaments in the feet, ankles and legs. Off road runners also get a more taxing cardio-vascular workout over shorter distances because of obstacle avoidance, changes in footing and the steeper hills normally associated with trails. Besides, it's just plan fun and makes you feel like a kid!

To get there:

The Merrimack River Trail lies 25 minutes north of Boston. Take I93 North one exit beyond Rte 495 to River Road in Andover; bear left at the light at the end of the ramp towards South Lawrence and take a left at the very first light into the Andover Marriott Courtyard. Go all the way to the back of the parking lot, and you'll see the trail head sign and map.
