Roadtrip To Alaska

I am taking a road trip for the month of June. Starting Memorial weekend, I'll be touring BC, Yukon, and Alaska with my girlfriend Amanda. This will be quite an adventure and really look forward to driving my Hummer around the planet. We'll be travelling far above the arctic circle to Inuvik and Prudhoe Bay, and then exploring interior of Alaska and BC. The Alaska Marine Ferry System will get us from Hyder/Stewart up to Skagway. I told Amanda she can't bring a hair dryer or even a curling iron.  (gasp!) Here is a list of some provisions that the Hummer will be hauling around.

Trip Details

As you can see, Alaska alone has plenty of exploring to be done. I've heard of some great travels in BC and the Yukon. Never know when I'll be through again so might as well see as much of it as 4-5 weeks permits.  There are many good books on exploring Alaska and the region in general. Here is an excellent one to start out with.

Our primary route will be route 16 intoStewart/Hyder. The Ferry will take us to Skagway, with stopovers in Ketchikan, Wrangell, Petersburg, and Juneau. We have a 2 day layover in Juneau. Plenty of time to do some exploration of the beautiful country that exists there.

From Skagway, we head north on the Klondike Highway to Dawson City and then to Inuvik. There is also a day flight to a small eskimo settlement called Tuktoyatuk, which is right on the Arctic Ocean. Pack the bathing suits??? naaaahhh.

From there we will travel on Top of the World Highway into Alaska again. Border and Chicken are the first towns we will encounter. I am told Chicken was so named because the original settlers didn't know how to spell Ptarmigan, the Alaska state bird. Anyway, there is a spur off the highway to Eagle that might be worth exploring. Then onward to Tok, and Fairbanks. There are many possibilities at this point. Hot Springs, Circle, Dalton Highway........Be sure to drop in and read about it!
