Joe Dinucci's Rousing Keynote talk

DAY 1

Kirk Loevner's Opening Address

Abstract:

Welcome to the fourth worldwide Silicon Graphics Developer Forum. The theme of Forum '95 is that, together, through our combined technologies, innovation and efforts, we are inventing the future. This forum provides you with a roadmap to Silicon Graphics' strategy moving forward.

Attending Forum '95 not only enabled you to experience our technology and passion firsthand, it was also an excellent opportunity to develop key contacts with our engineers.

Edward R. McCracken's Address

Abstract:

I welcome you with respect. The computer industry is new and constantly changing; it's full of growth opportunities and risks to those who don't keep up. At SGI, success means inventing the future, not reacting to it. In today's global economy, we have to be world-class, which is why our partnerships are so important. We believe that the best way to become world-class is by staying in touch with engineers (like you) who are in touch with their customers. Our long-term objective is to be the number one technical and science computing company on the planet. The health of our software partners is critical to this objective, which is one of the reasons why we're committed to you.

Michael Ramsay's Address

Abstract:

Entertainment is driving new technology and is creating demand for new applications. At Silicon Studio, these are our objectives:

I also discuss the Keystone Initiative and FireWalker. The Keystone Initiative involves creating a standards-based specification for handling digital development. FireWalker is a new generation game-authoring tool.

Forest Baskett's Address

Abstract:

I present a whirlwind tour of SGI's server products, and trace the history of SGI's involvement with server technology and with the development of RISC processing. I discuss "new world data," which is a confluence of database servers, file servers, and media servers. I also talk about the XFS filesystem, the open storage management architecture, and the Power CHALLENGE server. The future is collaborative computing, and that's what we're developing.

David E. Orton's Address

Abstract:

I examine future graphics technologies and markets, such as virtual sets, 3D imaging, performance animation, large-assembly CAD, theme parks, and film and video. I trace trends in graphics technology and introduce the SGI workstation family. I also present future challenges facing computer companies as they try to achieve peak performance measurements; for example, 200,000,000 polygons/sec. by the year 2000.

Joseph E. DiNucci's Address

Abstract:

Breakthroughs in the computer industry are not achieved on lowest common denominator technologies. Silicon Graphics is committed to the creation of differentiated technology that enables software developers to create new classes of software. At Silicon Graphics, we believe in fundamental change in software technologies as opposed to incremental improvement; we challenge the notion that all computer technologies are the same. Our primary business is the creation and perfection of major new classes of ultra-high performance, digital media-based computing and visual technologies.

Thomas A. Jermoluk's Address

Abstract:

At SGI we welcome change in the marketplace. Your applications coupled with our platform creates a demand to satisfy a particular need. Our religion is differentiated product, and technology is the key to our current and future success. My mission is to keep you informed of what SGI is up to so that we can address the needs of our customers. We create demand for SGI systems by delivering solutions to customers. We're not a content company and we're not a distribution company. We're a technology company.

Carlo Sequin's Address

Abstract:

"From 3D Graphics to Useful CASE Tools" is the title of my discussion. I focus on two topics: the Berkeley walkthrough project, for which some students and I designed a computer science building using only digital technology; and Make Edit, a mechanical design project. Much of the work that I describe during this address would not have been done without the interaction with and support of Silicon Graphics. During this talk, I also share five "deep thoughts."

The challenge ahead for software engineers in the field of 3D interactive graphics is to master systems integration. Another way to view this challenge is to design the software equivalent of the automatic transmission, which itself is a complex engineering design, but one that makes driving easier.
