Silicon Graphics Unveils New Era In Visual Manufacturing SiliconWorks

Company's Heritage in Interactive 3D Graphics, Digital Media and High-Performance Computing Advances Product Development

On November 15, 1994, Silicon Graphics, Inc. unveiled SiliconWorks(tm), a revolutionary integrated solution set for manufacturers that combines powerful third-party applications with Silicon Graphics' visual computing systems and advanced software tools. SiliconWorks builds upon Silicon Graphics' long-standing leadership in interactive 3D graphics, advanced computation and digital media technologies to offer manufacturing companies breakthrough tools to compete in today's global economy.

Also announced today are strategic additions to the SiliconWorks solution set including IRIS Annotator(tm), an intuitive full-media review tool that raises the level of collaboration in 3D design and analysis, and a technology alliance with NetManage(tm) , that will bring desktop videoconferencing interoperability between Silicon Graphics workstations and personal computers running the Windows operating system. In addition, Silicon Graphics announced the availability of 12 leading computational analysis applications for manufacturing on Silicon Graphics systems implementing the 64-bit MIPS(r) R8000(tm) RISC microprocessor.

"Agility is the passport to success in the '90s," said Tom Jermoluk, president and chief operating officer of Silicon Graphics. "A critical step toward achieving a truly nimble organization is the adoption of powerful technologies that induce process change. SiliconWorks is that solution, arming development teams with the technology tools they need to evolve their development and manufacturing operations into the next century."
SiliconWorks is a comprehensive solution set that streamlines the entire course of product development, from concept to prototyping. SiliconWorks integrates advanced hardware systems from Silicon Graphics-featuring leading interactive 3D graphics, digital media, high-end visualization and supercomputing technologies-with the industry's most powerful third-party software applications in a single, integrated, collaborative environment. Throughout the innovation, collaboration and validation development stages, the SiliconWorks solution set provides easy access to design information for all team members.

"As the fastest growing provider of computer-aided design solutions, Silicon Graphics is dedicated to evolving product design and development to remarkable new heights," said Joe DiNucci, vice president of Silicon Graphics' Manufacturing Industries. "The SiliconWorks environment addresses the requirements at every stage of manufacturing, from the first spark of innovation, to the challenge of computer-based collaboration, through to the validation of complex prototypes."
A lynchpin in the collaborative SiliconWorks solution set is IRIS Annotator, a new advanced application that enables Silicon Graphics customers to attach digital media annotations-in forms such as video, audio, images and text-to 3D models. Iris Annotator represents a communication breakthrough for 3D design and analysis, providing a powerful, easy-to-use method of sharing ideas and information across the entire organization. IRIS Annotator can be used on any Silicon Graphics workstation running IRIX 5.3 and will be available first quarter 1995.

Silicon Graphics and NetManage, a leader in TCP/IP for Windows applications, announced a technology alliance to provide an interoperability solution for InPerson(tm), Silicon Graphics desktop videoconferencing software, and the Windows operating system environment.

Twelve of Silicon Graphics' computational analysis software partners also announced their commitment to porting products to Silicon Graphics' most powerful systems, the POWER Challenge(tm) supercomputers, the POWER Onyx(tm) graphics supercomputers and the POWER Indigo2(tm) desktop system. SiliconWorks is complemented by over 450 leading CAD/CAM/CAE applications, including recently announced design products by Hewlett-Packard Company's Mechanical Design Division.
