Silicon Graphics' Interactive Technologies Unveiled With Time Warner Cable's Full Service Network

FSN System Software and Interface, CHALLENGE Media Servers and Set-Top Technology Deployed in Powerful Interactive Television System

On December 14, 1994 Silicon Graphics, Inc. unveiled an array of interactive technologies as part of the debut of Time Warner Cable's Full Service Network(tm) (FSN). The FSN features the most advanced solution ever deployed for interactive television services, and is the first ever to deliver fully functional, truly interactive applications to cable television subscribers.

The FSN incorporates several new interactive technologies developed by Silicon Graphics, including FSN system software and user interface, and video-on-demand and three interactive game applications. Silicon Graphics also supplied eight of its CHALLENGE(tm) symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) media servers for use in the network operating center, and powerful MIPS(r) RISC-based digital media technology for Scientific-Atlanta's prototype FSN home communications terminal, or set-top device.

"The Full Service Network represents the most powerful interactive television solution-period," said Edward R. McCracken, chairman and CEO of Silicon Graphics. "As achievements such as the FSN touch the lives of people everywhere, Silicon Graphics is building a bridge between the worlds of technology and emotion, serving as one of the principal architects of the Interactive Age."

Much of the fundamental technology used to create the Full Service Network will be instrumental in developing Silicon Graphics' solutions for other interactive projects, including a test of interactive multimedia services in Japan with Nippon Telegraph & Telephone. The underlying system software architecture will be used to commercially deploy large-scale, fully integrated, interactive video server solutions by Interactive Digital Solutions, a joint venture of Silicon Graphics and AT&T. Interactive Digital Solutions develops middleware and application development frameworks and tightly integrates them with hardware from open systems suppliers to provide complete solutions for interactive services.

Time Warner Cable is the nation's second largest cable television operator with 7.3 million customers in 34 states, and serves more than 500,000 customers in its Florida division. Time Warner Cable's Full Service Network is a digital, interactive television network which merges cable, telephone and computer technologies to provide customers greater choice, control and convenience in accessing information and services.
