Silicon Graphics To Host Entertainment Authoring Conference

Forum on Techniques and Opportunities in Digital Content Creation

On July 26, 1994 Silicon Graphics, Inc. announced it will host Silicon Studio(tm) '94: The Entertainment Authoring Conference, Nov. 8-10 at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles. The three-day conference will explore artistic challenges and techniques in digital content authoring for today's media including movies, television and print. The forum also will pinpoint new business opportunities in emerging media markets, such as interactive television, CD-ROM and location-based entertainment.

"Technology and entertainment have become synonymous," said Mike Ramsay, senior vice president of Silicon Graphics' Visual Systems Group and president of Silicon Studio, Inc., the company's recently announced subsidiary formed to focus on interactive media authoring. "Their convergence, however, is a daunting prospect for filmmakers, video production professionals, interactive game developers, publishers and other content creators who must assess the blurring landscape of interactive entertainment. The Entertainment Authoring Conference was created to help them define and select the opportunities now unfolding in the industry."

The Entertainment Authoring Conference will target creators of media content for motion pictures, television, video, advertising, print, music, interactive education, video games, interactive television, virtual reality and location-based entertainment attractions. The conference also will attract publishers and distributors of various entertainment media, theme park operators, cable television and telephone companies.

Already the recognized standard among computer animators and special effects artists in motion pictures and television, Silicon Graphics' systems are rapidly gaining popularity among professionals in the burgeoning interactive entertainment and digital video production markets. Silicon Graphics' MIPS(r) RISC-based systems, running the most powerful third-party authoring tools available, have led the migration of entertainment authors from costly and limited-use "black box" solutions to general-purpose RISC-based computing systems.

"The Entertainment Authoring Conference will bring together content and tool developers to make decisions about the adoption of entertainment technologies," said Kirk Loevner, vice president and general manager of Applications and Markets Division at Silicon Graphics. "The conference will provide a roadmap for developers tasked with creating and deploying new forms of entertainment for theaters, theme parks and homes."

The Entertainment Authoring Conference will feature sessions led by Silicon Graphics, its third party developers and industry luminaries on "real world" topics such as authoring strategies, video post-production, integrated desktop publishing, video game development and special effects. The forum also will offer panel discussions of timely entertainment technology issues, including set-top box standards, Internet vs. interactive television, multi-platform authoring, creation of digital art, interactive advertising, and electronic publishing for traditional print media.
