Silicon Graphics' Ed McCracken and Tom Jermoluk named to top executive posts

On February 2, 1994, Silicon Graphics, Inc. announced that President and Chief Executive Officer Edward R. McCracken has been named chairman of the board and CEO, and that Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Thomas Jermoluk has been named the company's president and COO. The titles, which reflect an unchanged reporting structure, were unanimously approved by the company's board of directors and are effective immediately.

"From the most strategic technology partnerships to the most prestigious entertainment alliances, Silicon Graphics' management team is well positioned to lead the company into the twenty-first century," said board member James McDivitt. "The organization in place today has been fundamental to Silicon Graphics' success as one of the industry's most profitable computer companies. In particular, Ed's instrumental role in leading the company, his powerful influence on defining and fostering Silicon Graphics' spirit and culture, and his unique understanding of the company's destiny make him an excellent choice as chairman and chief executive officer."

McCracken succeeds founder and chairman James H. Clark, who will leave Silicon Graphics on February 28. In addition to his expanded corporate role, McCracken also serves as co-chair of President Bill Clinton's National Information Infrastructure Advisory Council, a 27-member panel that will advise the U.S. government on the development of the national data superhighway system, and as co-chair of Joint Venture: Silicon Valley, a broad coalition of business, education, government and community leaders brought together to revitalize California's Silicon Valley. In addition, McCracken serves on the board of directors of Tularik, Inc., a privately held biotechnology company. He received an M.B.A. from Stanford University and a B.S.E.E. from Iowa State University, where he now serves as a Governor of the Iowa State University Foundation.

Jermoluk Named President and Chief Operating Officer

Jermoluk assumes the role of president and maintains his current post as chief operating officer. In this position, he continues to be responsible for engineering, manufacturing and marketing the company's entire range of computing systems. Additionally, he is responsible for research and development, finance and administration. Before being named executive vice president and COO, Jermoluk oversaw Silicon Graphics' high-end product strategy and development. Prior to joining Silicon Graphics, Jermoluk managed a variety of hardware and software development projects at Hewlett Packard and Bell Laboratories. Jermoluk has a master's and a bachelor's degree in computer science from Virginia Tech.

"Since joining Silicon Graphics in 1986, Tom's responsibilities have ranged from leading the company through the most intricate and successful product transitions, to negotiating the industry's most significant strategic relationships," said McCracken. "As chief operating officer, he was instrumental in navigating the company through the merger with MIPS Computer Systems, one of history's most successful high-tech collaborations, and through six new generations of technology. Our synergistic management styles combined with his charismatic leadership abilities have been fundamental to our success as a team, and I am proud to announce his new post."
