Tom Whiteside to join Silicon Graphics as President of MIPS Technologies

PowerPC Leader Leaves IBM to Head Silicon Graphics Subsidiary

MIPS Technologies, Inc. today announced that Tom Whiteside, formerly the director of RISC Processor Development at IBM Corporation, has accepted the position of president of MIPS Technologies. Whiteside will be responsible for research and development, marketing and alliance activities associated with the MIPS open RISC architecture. He will report to Wei Yen, senior vice president of Silicon Graphics, Inc. MIPS Technologies is a separate operating unit and a wholly owned subsidiary of Silicon Graphics.

"Tom has proven himself to be a strong leader and manager with an impressive track record in the semiconductor industry. Silicon Graphics has more than tripled its investment in open RISC development since its merger with MIPS. Tom's expertise will keep MIPS Technologies at the forefront of the computer industry."

Whiteside joined IBM in 1982 and in 1984 became manager of RT RISC design. He later was responsible for all RISC microprocessors and has lead the development of PowerPC since its inception. Prior to IBM, Whiteside held several design engineering and management positions with Motorola. He earned his B.S.E.E. degree from the University of Texas, Austin.
