MIPS-BASED RISC PCs deliver the power of MICROSOFT WINDOWS NT to customers

New Demand for Powerful, Low-Cost, Immediately Available MIPS PCs to Run Next Generation Software

MIPS Technologies, Inc. today announced that its systems vendors are experiencing strong demand for personal computers based on MIPS(r) RISC microprocessors for running Microsoft Windows NT 3.1 operating system. With the delivery of Windows NT, telephone inquiries and orders to MIPS-based PC manufacturers have increased markedly over the last month. MIPS-based PCs include systems from Acer America Corporation; Deskstation Technology, Inc.; NEC Technologies, Inc. and NeTpower, Inc. MIPS-based PCs are designed to optimally run Windows NT and offer up to twice the performance of Intel Pentium-based PCs at comparable prices. The standard release of Windows NT 3.1 supports both MIPS and Intel platforms.

"With Microsoft Windows NT now available, we're seeing a dramatic increase in calls," said Don Peterson, president of Deskstation Technology, a leading manufacturer of MIPS-based PCs. "We have been shipping systems since January, but, to date, most sales have been to software developers. Now we are getting a very strong response from corporate buyers. Right now-today-we can provide a powerful, low-cost platform for Windows NT."

"Windows NT for MIPS illustrates Microsoft's vision for a portable, high-performance operating system to meet the new, critical demands of corporate computing," said Paul Maritz, senior vice president of the systems division at Microsoft Corporation. "MIPS-based PCs are powerful enough to take full advantage of the power of Windows NT and will bring new applications to PC platforms. We are encouraged by the strong reception MIPS systems vendors are receiving from customers for their PCs running Windows NT."

"The MIPS-based Evolution RISC PC from DeskStation is creating a new market for organizations who want to migrate to workstation-level performance running enterprise applications," said Eugene Dancause, president of Massteck, a Littleton, Massachusetts software developer."The DeskStation Evolution RISC PCs are the most powerful Windows NT machines available in their price range, and they are a logical upgrade for our users."

MIPS-based PCs smoothly run existing MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows application software, but their power especially becomes apparent with 32-bit Windows NT applications. New 32-bit applications are now becoming available. These include a wide variety of applications for business critical, client/server, development tools, and power applications such as computer-aided design and color publishing.
