The Second IndiZone Contest

The second contest was announced in September of 1993. Entry cards were due in by October 28, 1993, and final code was due by January 21, 1994. There were 132 contestants who submitted entry cards this time; and only 24 of them submitted final code.

The categories were:

There were no entries whatsoever in the Multiple User Tools category, so no prizes were awarded for that category.

The winners of IndiZone2 were:

Each category winner went home with a development-class Indy workstation. The winners, and the finalists, were then put on CD. To date, there is only one version of the IndiZone2 CD:

Besides containing as many of the finalists as we could port to 5.2, this CD also contained some bonus items, specifically "FaxMgr2", based on the "Faxmgr" software from the first CD. These CDs began shipping in mid August with new Indigo2 XZ and Extreme and Indy workstations. They were also handed out as free giveaways at SGI's booth at SIGGRAPH in Orlando, Florida.

SIGGRAPH attendees were also treated to the premiere demonstration of DOOM for Silicon Graphics workstations. This screamingly popular PC game is now available for SGI machines running 5.2 and can be obtained via FTP (see alt.games.doom.announce for locations). DOOM will also be included on a re-release of IndiZone2 which will be occurring in the early winter '94 timeframe. If you are currently an owner of a non-DOOM IndiZone2 CD, hang on to it and watch this space for more details on how to get the DOOM version.

Many, many thanks to Dave Taylor of id Software for porting DOOM to SGI.
