OVERVIEW

Why have a garbage dump in Mansourieh Valley?

The rational behind moving the garbage from Karantina (located in Beirut province), to Mansourieh is related to rebuilding Beirut. Plans for rebuilding Beirut included transporting the waste from Karantina , to another remote location.  Having a waste dump in Beirut province, does not promote tourism, and foreign investors. Mansourieh was the perfect choice, relatively close to Beirut, which cost less to transport the waste, and  is less "visible".

Environmental Hazards to Beirut Residents

The waste dump is located South East of Mansourieh EL-Maten, in an area known as Monte Verde. The dump site is near Beirut river which is the main source of   drinking water for Beirut City.

Overall Environmental Analysis

The soil of Monte Verde is limestone, a karst topography (very porous), which causes water pollution to occur at a faster rate. Leachate, the juices from the trash, even if it does not contain commercial radioactive materials, is composed from a mixture of chemicals that is very toxic and noxious, especially if the trash is new trash. On the other hand, old trash, when dry, is much more safer than wet new trash. In dry trash all the leachate had already been drained!

Your Help Is Needed

It is true the the dump site has been closed, however, we want ALL the waste removed from Mansourieh valley, and properly disposed, in order to  restore the area to its natural habitat.
