Items needed:
1 pair of small scissors (I use cuticle scissors)
1 tapestry needle with large eye
Source of hair ie. another doll, Cut and Style Hair extension
1 needle nose pliers without teeth
1 toothbrush
1 cup of boiling water

The above items are needed to convert doll A to doll B. Since there are so many dolls available with different eyecolor and haircolor combinations, I leave the makeup alone. I do hair restyles, partial reroots and root eyelashes.

Doll A is Sticker Craze Barbie. As many of you know, this doll is not the prettiest of the pink box Mackie faced dolls. Her make up just looks washed out and her hair looks like it has split ends. Her hair is also crooked because of the way her hair is sewn to the box and because of that funny looking hair band. Doll B is the same Barbie with her hair straightened, lashes rooted, beauty mark painted, and earrings replaced. The difference that the rooted eyelashes makes on her makeup is amazing. Her makeup now stands out and looks bolder.

You may want to start out with one of your kid’s Barbie’s or a $5 dress up Barbie. Rooting eyelashes is an art that one perfects. You may not get perfect eyelashes the first time, but practice will make you better.

Rooting eyelashes:

Step 1. The head must be removed. By inserting the pliers in the neck hole in the back, gently stretch her head back and up until you have her neck over the hook that secures her head.

Step 2. You will use the eye as a guideline to make your plugs. I make the plugs on the eye, right below the eyeliner. This gives Barbie that sleepy eyed look. I usually make 6 plugs per eye. One plug goes in the inner part of the iris (the colored part). The 2nd one goes right where the pupil begins. The 3rd goes where the pupil ends. The fourth goes on the outer part of the iris. The 5th goes in the center part of the outer sclera (white part of the eye) and the 6th goes in the corner of the eye. Although, each Barbie has different size eyes, use your own judgment to make the plugs equidistant. Remember, these landmarks on the eye are only guidelines.

Thread a plug of hair into the eye of the needle. The thickness of the hairplug should be the same as the plug of hair on the dolls head. I fold one end in half to make it flat and then thread it through. Take the needle and push it through the inner part of the iris, right below the liner. Pull the needle out of the neck hole and remove the hairplug from the eye of the needle. Tie a knot on the plug and pull the hair plug from the other end until you feel tension. Cut the hairplug to about 1/2 cm. Repeat the threading process above for the other side. Alternate eyes when putting in plugs, so your eyelashes will be equal. I use a hair strand long enough to use for 6 plugs. I recommend doing this to ensure that your hairplugs are of equal thickness. When all the plugs are in, trim your eyelashes. With the pointed ended of the scissors, go in between each plug to get any snags out. Cut away all the stray hairs until your eyelashes are perfect.

Straightening hair:

You will need a microwave proof mug and fill it with water 1/2 way. Place in microwave for 1 minute. Immediately after it is done. Remove from microwave and dip your tooth brush in it and brush Barbie’s hair straight. When you are done, let her hair air dry.

Cutting Barbie’s hair straight.

Pace your doll feet down in a Ziplock Freezer bag. Make sure her hair is on the outside of the bag. Using the top of the bag as a guideline, cut the bottom of her hair straight. Trim as necessary.

Painting a beauty mark.

Using Testor’s car model flat black paint, dip a pin in the paint. Dab the pin by poking it on a piece of paper towel first. Then place the tip on Barbie’s face.
