M27 M27

This image of M27 (the "Dumb Bell Nebula") is composed of four 30 second exposures added together. This image was taken on top of Elsinore Peak on Sept 8th, 1996 with my Meade LX200 10" telescope and a CB245 at F/6.3 focal ratio.

It derives its name due to the apparant shape of the nebula. M27 is expanding at the rate of about 17 miles per second and actual measurement using astrometric photography has confirmed the expansion at about 1.0 arc seconds per century. If this rate of expansion has been constant, then the approximate age of M27 is around 48,000 years old.
