NGC 253 NGC 253/PGC 2789

This image of NGC 253 is composed of four 30 second exposures added together. This image was taken on top of Elsinore Peak on Sept 8th, 1996 with my Meade LX200 10" telescope and a CB245 at F/6.3 focal ratio.

NGC 253 is the brightest member of the "Sculptor Group of Galixies" or the "South Galatic Pole Group." NGC 253 is probably one of the nearest galaxies beyond our Local Group. It has a very large apparent size and lacks a red-shift in its spectral lines. It has a corrected radial velocity of about 42 miles per second in approach toward us.
